A WhatsApp status usually won't load because it's gone: WhatsApp's Help Center says a status is only available for 24 hours, and it can also vanish if the person deleted it or WhatsApp took it down for breaking its Terms of Service. If the status should still be there, the next suspects are a weak connection, their privacy settings, a block on your side, or a contact problem.
The message that confuses most people is "this status is no longer available". According to WhatsApp's Help Center (as of October 2026), that line appears for exactly three reasons: the 24-hour window ran out, the person who posted it deleted it, or it was removed for a Terms of Service breach. None of those is a fault on your phone. If it was a status you were mentioned in, WhatsApp's advice is simple: ask the person to share it with you again.
Quick diagnosis: match what you see to the cause
| What you see | Likely cause (WhatsApp Help Center) | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 'This status is no longer available' | Expired after 24 hours, deleted by the person, or removed for a Terms of Service breach | Ask them to share it again |
| Their status isn't in your list at all | Their status privacy settings leave you out of the audience, you've blocked them, or one of you hasn't saved the other as a contact | Ask them to check their audience; check your blocks and contacts |
| Status spins and won't load | Weak mobile data or Wi-Fi on your side or theirs | Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then reopen the status list |
| Status loads but looks blurry | Media is compressed when it's shared, and a poor connection makes it worse | Try a stronger connection; some quality loss is normal |
| You can't see who viewed a status | Read receipts are turned off by you or the viewer | Turn read receipts on |
When the status is still live but won't open
If the status is less than a day old and still won't load, work through WhatsApp's own fixes in this order:
- Check the connection. WhatsApp's Help Center says both you and the person who posted need a strong mobile data or Wi-Fi connection. If you're on Wi-Fi, try mobile data, and the other way round.
- Try a different network. WhatsApp's connection guide notes that office or university campus Wi-Fi can cause problems. A different Wi-Fi network or a hotspot is worth a go.
- Reset app permissions. Reset WhatsApp's permissions in your phone settings and make sure they're all switched on.
- Restart your phone. Turn it off and on again, then open your status list. WhatsApp's connection guide suggests waiting about 30 seconds before switching back on.
- Update WhatsApp. Install the latest version available for your device, then open the status list again.
- Contact your provider. If none of that helps and you've got no internet at all, WhatsApp says to contact your network or internet provider.
If status is only one of several things failing, such as photos in chats too, the problem is wider than status. See why WhatsApp images aren't loading or the broader guide to WhatsApp not working.
Why you can't see someone's status at all
A status that never shows up is a different problem from one that won't load. WhatsApp's Help Center lists these causes:
You're not in their audience
People choose who sees their status. WhatsApp says status updates go to all your contacts by default, but anyone can change their status privacy so you're left out. You can't change that from your side, so the only fix is to ask them to check whether you're in their status audience.
You've blocked them
If you've blocked someone, WhatsApp says you won't see any of their messages, replies or status updates. Check your blocked list before assuming anything's broken.
A contacts problem
WhatsApp's Help Center gives four contact checks:
- Add the other person to your contacts, and ask them to add you to theirs.
- Make sure their number is saved in full international format.
- If you have more than one WhatsApp account, check you're using the account and number they've saved for you.
- Allow WhatsApp full access to your phone's address book, or some contact names won't appear when you try to view a status.
Statuses you hid or muted yourself
Before you assume a status won't load, check you haven't hidden it. WhatsApp's Help Center says hidden statuses still arrive, but they're moved to a Hidden section of the Status tab. You might need to scroll down to find it, then select Show to open them. Statuses from muted contacts work the same way and sit under Muted.
One quirk: the Hidden section won't appear at all if the people you've hidden haven't posted recently. As soon as one of them shares a status, it shows there and you can unhide them. If you want the full steps, see how to hide and unhide WhatsApp statuses.
When it's your own status that won't share
If the status that won't load is one you're trying to post, WhatsApp's "Can't create or share status" article lists a few limits to check first:
| Check | What WhatsApp's Help Center says |
|---|---|
| Storage | You need at least 1 GB of free space on your device to share a status |
| Video length | Videos can be up to 90 seconds; anything longer gets cut to the first 90 seconds |
| Video format | Only 3GP or MP4 files can be uploaded |
| File | Make sure the image or video isn't corrupt |
| Connection | A weak connection can stop the upload or make photos look blurry |
Blurry status photos aren't always a fault. WhatsApp says images, GIFs and videos are usually compressed when shared, so they can look grainy or pixelated next to the original.
Views and replies that don't show
Read receipts control status views both ways. WhatsApp's Help Center says that if either you or the viewer has turned read receipts off, you won't be able to see who viewed the status. The same switch works in reverse: turning read receipts off is how you view someone's status without them seeing you did.

Replies are another blind spot. WhatsApp says you won't see replies to your status if your privacy settings don't allow messages from those contacts, or if the person replying isn't in your status audience. When replies do come through, they land in your shared chat with that person, labelled Status. For more on views, see why WhatsApp status views aren't showing.
WhatsApp also notes it's testing features that may not reach everyone yet, so keep the app updated to get them once they're available.
My advice before you start troubleshooting
My advice: check the clock first. If the status went up more than 24 hours ago, or the person might have deleted it, there's nothing to fix and you'll waste time restarting and updating. If it's recent, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then look in the Hidden and Muted sections. Only if it's still missing would I ask the person whether you're in their audience, because that's the one cause you can't see or fix yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my WhatsApp status not loading?
WhatsApp's Help Center lists a weak connection on your side or the poster's as the main reason a live status won't load. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, restart your phone and update WhatsApp. If the status is over 24 hours old, it's expired.
What does 'this status is no longer available' mean?
WhatsApp says it means the status expired after 24 hours, the person who shared it deleted it, or it was taken down for breaking WhatsApp's Terms of Service. If you were mentioned in it, ask them to share it again.
Why can't I see someone's WhatsApp status?
They may have changed their status privacy so you're not in their audience, you may have blocked them, or one of you hasn't saved the other as a contact. WhatsApp also says to check numbers are saved in full international format.
How long does a WhatsApp status last?
WhatsApp's Help Center says a status is only available for 24 hours. After that, other people can't view it, though WhatsApp says your status archive lets you keep your own statuses and their details after the window ends.
Why can't I see who viewed my status?
If either you or the viewer has turned off read receipts, WhatsApp says you won't see status views. It may also be that no one's viewed it yet, so wait a while and check again.
Why won't my status upload?
WhatsApp says you need at least 1 GB of free storage, a strong connection and a file that isn't corrupt. Videos must be 3GP or MP4 and up to 90 seconds; longer ones are cut to the first 90 seconds.
Why is my status photo blurry?
WhatsApp says media is usually compressed when shared to status, so it can look lower quality than the original. A poor connection can make status photos look blurry too.
