WhatsApp Siri: How to Send, Call and Read Messages Hands-Free

Siri can send WhatsApp messages, make WhatsApp calls and read your unread WhatsApp messages aloud on an iPhone. Turn it on in iPhone Settings: open Siri, enable it, then go to Apps, WhatsApp and switch on Use with Siri Request. If Siri says you have no messages, you probably opened WhatsApp first.

Using WhatsApp hands-free is handy when you're cooking, walking or driving. On an iPhone, Siri does the work: you speak, it sends. The setup takes about a minute in your iPhone settings, and there's one odd rule about unread messages that explains most of the 'Siri isn't working' complaints.

What Siri can do with WhatsApp

Ask Siri toExample of what to say
Send a messageSend a WhatsApp to Sam saying I'm running ten minutes late
Make a callWhatsApp call Mum
Read new messagesRead my WhatsApp messages

Those three jobs are what WhatsApp lists: sending messages, placing calls and reading unread messages aloud. The exact words don't have to match. Just mention WhatsApp and the person's name as it's saved in your contacts.

How to set up Siri with WhatsApp

  1. Open your iPhone Settings and tap Siri.
  2. Tap Talk to Siri and turn on Press Side Button for Siri.
  3. Tap Enable Siri.
  4. Go back to Siri, then tap Apps, then WhatsApp.
  5. Turn on Use with Siri Request.

On an iPhone X, XS, XS Max or XR, you can also press and hold the side button and tap Turn On Siri. Menu names in iPhone Settings change between iOS versions, so if you can't see one of these exactly, look for the closest match under Siri.

Why Siri won't read your WhatsApp messages

This is the quirk to know. WhatsApp says that opening WhatsApp with unread messages resets the notification badge. Siri then thinks there are no unread messages, so it won't read them. In other words, if you glance at WhatsApp first and then ask Siri, it has nothing to read.

The fix is simple: ask Siri before you open the app. If you've already opened it, the messages count as seen, and you'll need to read them yourself or ask Siri again when new ones arrive.

A good habit if you rely on Siri while out and about: leave WhatsApp closed and let notifications pile up, then ask Siri to read them in one go when you're ready. You'll hear each message in turn, and you can reply by voice without picking up the phone. It's also a gentle way to stop checking the app every few minutes.

Siri not working with WhatsApp? Check these

  1. Use with Siri Request is off. Check it under Settings, Siri, Apps, WhatsApp.
  2. You opened WhatsApp first. Siri won't read messages once the badge has reset.
  3. The contact name doesn't match. Use the name exactly as it's saved in your contacts, or give the contact a nickname that's easy to say.
  4. Siri itself is off. Make sure Siri is enabled in Settings.
  5. WhatsApp or iOS is out of date. Update both and try again.

If the contact you're trying to message doesn't seem to exist in WhatsApp, my guide to adding a contact on WhatsApp walks through saving them correctly first.

Using Siri with WhatsApp in the car

Siri is the main hands-free way to use WhatsApp on an iPhone. Ask it to read your new messages or reply while you keep your eyes on the road. Keep messages short, check Siri has understood before it sends, and if a message needs thought, leave it until you've stopped. No message is worth taking your attention off driving.

Make Siri understand your contacts

Most misheard messages come down to names. Siri works from your iPhone contacts, so a contact saved as 'Jo Work New' is harder to say than 'Jo'. A few fixes help:

Work with me

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Give contacts short, sayable names, or add a nickname in the Contacts app.
  • Avoid saving two people with almost the same name.
  • If Siri keeps picking the wrong person, say the full name once and confirm before it sends.

Spending two minutes tidying your most-messaged contacts makes hands-free WhatsApp far more reliable. It also helps when you use Siri for normal texts and calls, because they share the same contact list.

Privacy: what Siri does with your messages

Your WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted, but when Siri reads or dictates a message, Apple's voice assistant is handling it. WhatsApp points you to Apple Support for how Apple handles data sent through Siri. If that bothers you for a particular chat, type the message yourself instead.

Tips for clean dictated messages

  • Say the punctuation you want, such as 'comma' or 'question mark'.
  • Pause briefly before the message itself, so Siri doesn't add the person's name to the text.
  • Check the preview before you confirm, especially for names, times and numbers.
  • For anything long, dictate in the WhatsApp chat with the keyboard microphone instead, so you can edit before sending.

And if you'd rather people didn't see the moment you read their message, my guide to turning off read receipts on WhatsApp explains the trade-off.

My verdict

Siri and WhatsApp work well together once Use with Siri Request is switched on. Use it to send quick replies and make calls hands-free, and ask Siri to read new messages before you open the app, because opening WhatsApp first is why Siri so often says you have nothing new.
