WhatsApp says notifications fail in four different ways, and each one has its own fix: no alert while the app is closed, no alert while it's open, no alerts from groups, or an alert that arrives silent. Work out which one you've got first, then check your phone's notification, battery and background settings, because WhatsApp says your phone's settings override its own.
Which of the four failures have you got?
WhatsApp's help page groups the problem into four types. Push notifications are the alerts you get while WhatsApp is closed or in the background; if new messages only show up once you open the app, this is yours, and it usually comes down to notification permissions, background data or battery settings. In-app notifications are the banner for another chat, the unread count and the icon badge while you're using WhatsApp. Group notifications have their own settings, and each group can be muted separately. The sound issue is the one where the alert turns up but makes no noise.
Sorting first stops you poking at the wrong settings. This is how I'd match what you're seeing to WhatsApp's types:
| What you see | WhatsApp's type | Check this first |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing until I open WhatsApp | Push | Phone notification permission, background data, battery optimisation |
| The alert arrives but it's silent | Notification sound | WhatsApp's tone (Silent or None), phone sound settings, Do Not Disturb or Focus |
| One-to-one chats alert, groups don't | Group | Whether that group's muted |
| The unread number on the icon is wrong | In-app badge | Your phone's launcher, not WhatsApp |
| Alerts only fail on a tablet or computer | Linked device or WhatsApp Web | That device's own settings |
Muting and customising groups is its own job, so if that's your row, head to my guide to WhatsApp group notifications instead. The rest of this page covers the other four rows.
Why the WhatsApp toggle seems to do nothing
This is the one that catches most people. WhatsApp says your device settings override its settings. If you've silenced WhatsApp at phone level, switching things on inside WhatsApp won't take effect. You can tap the in-app toggle all day and nothing changes, because the phone's already said no.
It works the other way too. WhatsApp says if the in-app Notification tone is Silent on Android, or Sound is None on iPhone, you'll get no sound even when the phone's sound is on. Both layers need to agree. And if you set custom notifications for a single chat, WhatsApp adds a new notification category in your phone's settings, which is one more place a setting can hide.
Android fixes, in the order I'd do them
Menu names vary by maker and Android version, so treat these as WhatsApp's paths as of Nov 2026:
- Permission. On Android 13 and above, apps need permission to send notifications. If you said no at some point, go to Settings, then Apps, then WhatsApp, then Notifications, and turn on Allow notifications.
- Phone notifications. Settings, then Notifications, then App notifications, then WhatsApp: make sure it's on. Sound and vibration live under Settings, then Sounds and Vibration.
- WhatsApp's own settings. Tap the three dots, then Settings, then Notifications, and switch on what you want. Check the Notification tone isn't Silent.
- Background data. Settings, then Apps, then WhatsApp, then Mobile data usage. Turn Background data off and back on.
- Battery optimisation. This one depends on your phone maker, so use the table below.
- Do Not Disturb. Settings, then Modes, then Do Not Disturb, and turn it off. Then update WhatsApp and restart the phone.
| Phone | WhatsApp's battery path as of Nov 2026 |
|---|---|
| Samsung | Settings - Battery and device care - Battery - Background usage limits - Never sleeping apps - add WhatsApp |
| Xiaomi or Redmi (MIUI) | Settings - Battery and performance - App battery saver - WhatsApp - No restrictions |
| Huawei or Honor (EMUI) | Settings - Battery - App launch - WhatsApp - Manage manually - toggle all on |
| OnePlus (OxygenOS) | Settings - Battery - Battery optimization - WhatsApp - Don't optimize |
| Oppo or Realme (ColorOS) | Settings - Battery - More battery settings - Optimize battery use - WhatsApp - Don't optimize |
| Any other Android | Settings - Battery - Battery optimization - WhatsApp - Don't optimize |
WhatsApp names battery settings as one of the three things push alerts depend on, which is why this row is where I'd look first for the nothing-until-I-open-it problem.
Two Android oddities WhatsApp flags. From Android 10, pop-up alerts at the top of the screen may stop appearing, and WhatsApp says that's Android's change, not a WhatsApp setting. Set WhatsApp's importance to Urgent or High under Settings, then Notifications, then WhatsApp, and look for an option called something like Pop on screen or Floating notifications. And if a custom tone keeps reverting to the default, WhatsApp says the file needs to be MP3, OGG, WAV or M4A in the Notifications folder; resetting WhatsApp's notification settings and clearing the app cache can help. Choosing a tone in the first place is covered in how to change your WhatsApp ringtone.
iPhone fixes, and the part WhatsApp can't fix
- Settings, then Notifications, then WhatsApp: turn on Allow Notifications.
- In WhatsApp, open Settings (or tap your profile picture), then Notifications. If Sound is None, you won't hear a thing.
- Settings, then General, then Background App Refresh: make sure WhatsApp's switched on.
- If you use a Focus on iOS 15 or later, go to Settings, then Focus, pick Do Not Disturb or your active Focus, then Apps, then Allow Notifications From, and add WhatsApp.
- Check Scheduled Summary under Settings, then Notifications, and take WhatsApp out of it, because a summary can hold alerts back.
- Stop swiping WhatsApp away. WhatsApp says force-quitting it means you might not get notifications.
If it's the previews that are missing, go to Settings, then Notifications, then WhatsApp, then Show Previews, and set it to Always or When Unlocked. Custom sounds on iPhone have to come from WhatsApp's built-in list.
Here's the honest catch. WhatsApp says iPhone push notifications come from Apple's push notification service, not from WhatsApp directly, and it can't resolve problems with them. If you've done every step above and alerts still don't arrive, it's an Apple-side question. On Android, WhatsApp's last resort is the same idea: contact your phone's manufacturer.
Tablets, computers and second phones
Every linked device, whether that's an iPad, an Android tablet or a second phone, needs its own Allow Notifications and background settings. WhatsApp also says linked devices may be logged out if your main phone goes unused for over 14 days, so if a tablet's gone quiet, try logging out and linking it again.

On WhatsApp Web, turn on desktop notifications from the banner above the chat list. If your browser blocked them, allow web.whatsapp.com in the browser's site notification settings. If it's the computer app itself that's misbehaving, that's a different fix, covered in why WhatsApp desktop stops working.
Badges and silences that look broken but aren't
The badge count. WhatsApp says the number on the app icon is a feature of your phone maker and comes from your launcher, not WhatsApp. If it's stuck, ask someone to send you a new message to refresh it, reset WhatsApp's notification settings, or remove the home-screen shortcut and drag a fresh one from the app drawer. Reinstalling is the last step, and only once you're sure you've got a backup.
Archived chats. WhatsApp says these don't notify you unless you're mentioned or replied to, and a new message leaves the chat archived by default. If one person's gone silent, check your archive before you touch a setting.
The quick test. If messages appear the moment you open WhatsApp but you got no alert while it was closed, WhatsApp says that's a notification problem, and everything above applies. If they don't appear even after you open the app, it's a delivery problem, and that's covered in WhatsApp not receiving messages.
My verdict on missing WhatsApp alerts
I'd start by working out which of the four failures you've got, because it saves you changing settings that were never the problem. Then go to your phone's settings before WhatsApp's, since the phone wins. On Android, battery optimisation is where I'd look first for alerts that only arrive when you open the app; on iPhone, it's Background App Refresh, Focus and Scheduled Summary. Skip reinstalling until you've done the rest and made a backup, and skip blaming WhatsApp for iPhone push delivery, because WhatsApp says that part runs through Apple.
If your team answers customers on WhatsApp, missed alerts mean missed replies, and sorting out the setup is part of the customer messaging work I help teams with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I only get WhatsApp messages when I open the app?
WhatsApp calls this a push notification problem. It usually comes down to notification permissions, background data or battery settings on your phone, and WhatsApp says your phone's settings override its own.
Why are my WhatsApp notifications silent?
Check WhatsApp's own tone first: a Notification tone of Silent on Android, or Sound set to None on iPhone, means no sound even when the phone's sound is on. Then check Do Not Disturb or Focus.
Why is the WhatsApp icon badge count wrong?
WhatsApp says the icon badge comes from your phone's launcher, not WhatsApp. A new incoming message, resetting notification settings or replacing the home-screen shortcut can refresh it.
Can WhatsApp fix iPhone notification problems?
WhatsApp says iPhone push notifications come from Apple's push notification service, so it can't resolve issues with them directly.
