If WhatsApp isn't receiving messages, first check whether they appear when you open the app. If they do, it's a notification issue. If not, check your connection, restart your phone, update WhatsApp, free up storage and check blocked contacts and muted groups.
Someone tells you they've messaged you three times and you've seen nothing. Or the message turns up hours late, all at once, the moment you open the app. If WhatsApp is how customers, suppliers or family reach you, that's more than a nuisance.
WhatsApp's help centre has a dedicated article on trouble sending and receiving messages. The most useful part is a simple first question that sorts the problem into two very different types, and I'll start there. Then I'll go through every fix it names, in its order, with the extra cases for groups, blocked contacts and the computer apps.
First question: are WhatsApp messages missing or just silent?
WhatsApp tells you to check whether messages are arriving without an alert, or not arriving at all. Those need different fixes.
- If the messages appear as soon as you open WhatsApp, but you got no alert while the app was closed, it's a notification problem, not a delivery problem.
- If the messages don't appear even after you open WhatsApp, work through the connection and phone steps below.
This one test saves a lot of time. Open WhatsApp now and see what's waiting. If a pile appears, you're chasing notifications. If nothing appears, keep reading.
Fixing your connection when WhatsApp isn't receiving messages
WhatsApp needs an active internet connection to receive messages, so its help centre starts there:
- Make sure Wi-Fi or mobile data is turned on and working.
- Open a website in your browser to confirm your connection really works.
- Turn airplane mode on and off to reset the connection.
- Restart your phone and open WhatsApp again.
It's boring advice, but WhatsApp lists it first for a reason. A phone that looks connected can have a connection that isn't passing data, and a restart often clears it.
Phone checks if WhatsApp still isn't receiving messages
If your connection works and messages still aren't arriving, WhatsApp suggests checking these:
- Storage space. WhatsApp says that when storage is full, new messages and media may not be saved.
- Date and time. Make sure your phone's date and time are set correctly.
- Updates. Update WhatsApp to the latest version from your app store.
The storage point catches people out, especially on older phones full of photos and videos. If yours is nearly full, clearing space is a sensible first move, and my guide to stopping WhatsApp saving photos to your gallery helps keep it from filling up again.
When WhatsApp messages are missing from just one person
If it's only one contact whose messages never arrive, WhatsApp's advice is to check whether you've blocked them. According to its help pages, you won't receive messages from a contact you've blocked. It's easy to do by accident and forget.
The mirror image matters too. If you're the one waiting for a reply and nothing comes, WhatsApp lists signs you may have been blocked: your messages show a single check mark that never changes, you can't see their last seen or online status, and your calls don't connect. None of those signs proves it on its own, and I've gone through them in my guide to knowing if someone blocked you on WhatsApp.
When WhatsApp messages are missing from just one group
For a single group going quiet, WhatsApp says to check two things. Has the group been muted? Or have you been removed from it? Either one explains silence. If you were removed, you'd see a note when you try to send saying you can't send messages to the group.
Archived chats and missing WhatsApp messages
Here's a quiet culprit. WhatsApp says you won't get notifications for archived chats unless you're mentioned or replied to. When a new message arrives in an archived chat, the chat stays archived by default, so you may simply not notice it. Open your Archived list at the top of the chats screen and have a look before assuming messages are lost.
WhatsApp Web or Desktop not receiving messages
If messages come through on your phone but not your computer, WhatsApp points to the way linked devices work. They carry on even when your phone is offline, but WhatsApp says linked devices are logged out if you don't use your phone for over 14 days. Its steps are:

- Open WhatsApp on your phone to confirm your account is still active, and relink your computer if it was logged out.
- Refresh the page, or restart the WhatsApp Desktop app.
- Check your browser is allowed to show notifications for WhatsApp, if you can see new messages in the browser but get no alerts.
How check marks show a WhatsApp message wasn't received
When you're on the sending side, the ticks tell you what's happening. WhatsApp explains that a clock icon means your phone isn't connected to the internet, a single check mark means the message left your phone but hasn't reached the other person's device, two check marks mean it was delivered, and two blue check marks mean it was read.
A single tick that stays single can mean the other person's phone is off or out of coverage, or that they've run out of mobile data. That's useful to know before you assume anything worse.
General fixes when WhatsApp isn't receiving messages
If none of the above fits, WhatsApp's general list is:
- Restart your phone.
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
- Check the date and time on your phone are correct.
- Make sure you've completed verification of your phone number.
- Clear WhatsApp's cache.
- As a last step, uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, after backing up your chats.
That last step carries a risk if you haven't backed up, so look at my post on fixing a stuck WhatsApp backup first if your backup has been playing up.
WhatsApp not receiving messages when you run a small business
When customers can't reach you, a few habits limit the damage:
- Check your Archived and muted chats daily, so nothing sits unseen.
- Keep an eye on storage. A full phone is a surprisingly common reason for missed messages.
- Give customers a second route, such as an email address, if WhatsApp is how they usually reach you.
- Update WhatsApp and your phone regularly.

If WhatsApp still isn't receiving messages
WhatsApp's article doesn't go further than the steps above, and I won't pretend otherwise. If you've been through them in order and messages still don't arrive, contact WhatsApp via its help centre or the support option in the app, and say which phone you use, what you see when you open WhatsApp, and whether it's all chats or just one.
Frequently asked questions
Why am I not receiving WhatsApp messages?
WhatsApp says the cause is usually your internet connection, phone settings or the sender's situation. Check your connection, restart your phone, update WhatsApp and make sure storage isn't full.
Why do WhatsApp messages only arrive when I open the app?
WhatsApp says that's a notification issue, not a delivery issue. Messages appear when you open the app but you get no alert while it's closed.
Can blocking someone stop me getting their WhatsApp messages?
Yes. WhatsApp says you won't receive messages from a contact you've blocked, so check your blocked list if only one person's messages are missing.
Why don't I get messages from one WhatsApp group?
WhatsApp suggests checking whether the group is muted, or whether you've been removed from it.
Why does WhatsApp Web not show my new messages?
WhatsApp says linked devices are logged out if you don't use your phone for over 14 days. Open WhatsApp on your phone, relink your computer if needed, and refresh the page.
