To add a member tag in WhatsApp, open the group, tap the group name, scroll to the members list, tap your own name, add your tag and tap Save. A member tag is a short label you set for yourself in each group, up to 30 characters, shown beside your name.
Last checked October 2026.
If a WhatsApp group has started showing a prompt to add a member tag, or you've spotted little labels next to people's names in a busy chat, here's what's going on. Member tags are WhatsApp's way of letting you say who you are in each group, without changing your name everywhere else. I've put this guide together from WhatsApp's own help centre article on member tags and Meta's announcement of the feature, so the steps match what the app does.
What a WhatsApp member tag is
A member tag is a short label you give yourself inside one group. Meta's announcement describes it as a customisable tag in each of your group chats that tells the group what your role is. Its example is being "Anna's Dad" in one group and "Goalkeeper" in another.
The tag sits alongside your name. WhatsApp's help centre says it appears beside your name in message bubbles and in the member list, and that current and future members of the group can see it. Your profile name and the name people have saved for you in their contacts don't change.
Don't mix this up with the grey system message that says who added someone to a group. That's a separate record of how a person joined, and it's been part of WhatsApp groups for years.
How to add a member tag in a WhatsApp group
These are the steps from WhatsApp's help centre. They're the same idea on Android and iPhone, though button positions can differ slightly.
- Open the group chat.
- Tap the group name at the top to open group info.
- Scroll down to the members list and tap your own name (it usually shows as You).
- Tap the option to add or edit your member tag.
- Type your tag and tap Save.
Some groups show a prompt inviting you to add your member tag. That's the same feature, and tapping it takes you to the same place.
How to edit or delete your WhatsApp member tag
You can change or remove your tag whenever you like. WhatsApp's help article lists the steps:
- Edit: open the group, tap the group name, scroll to the members list, tap your name, tap Edit member tag, type the new tag and tap Save.
- Delete: follow the same path to Edit member tag, then tap the bin icon and confirm Delete.
Because tags are set per group, deleting your tag in one group leaves your tags in other groups as they are.
WhatsApp member tag rules: length, characters and who sets them
- Length: WhatsApp's help centre says a member tag can be up to 30 characters.
- Characters: you can't use special characters, checkmarks or links in a tag.
- One group at a time: you can set a different tag in each group you're in.
- You set your own: Meta's announcement says you give yourself the tag. Reports on the rollout say admins don't need to approve it.
That last point matters. A tag is self-described, so treat it like a name badge someone wrote themselves. It's not a verified title, and it's not a sign of admin status.
Why the member tag option isn't showing on WhatsApp
Meta said the feature was rolling out on the latest versions of WhatsApp for Android and iPhone, with availability spreading gradually. If you can't see it:

- Update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
- Close and reopen the app, then check group info again.
- Try a different group, in case one group looks different from another on your version.
- Give it a little time. Gradual rollouts reach accounts at different times.

Member tag ideas for business and community WhatsApp groups
Tags are handy when a group mixes customers, staff and volunteers. A few ideas:
- Small business owners: "Owner, bakery" or "Orders and bookings" so customers know who to message.
- Team groups: "Design", "Accounts" or "Weekend cover" so new starters know who does what.
- Clubs and schools: "Coach", "Treasurer" or "Year 3 parent".
- Event groups: "Venue contact" or "Speaker" for the days around an event.
If you run a group for customers, it's worth checking how people find and join it. My guide on sharing a group invite link covers that side, and the steps for joining business groups safely are worth passing on to members.
WhatsApp member tag privacy: what others can see
If you manage a busy group, it can help to post a short message asking members to add a tag that says how they're connected to the group. You can't set tags for other people, so a friendly nudge is the way to do it, and it makes long threads much easier to follow when lots of people share similar names.
Anyone in the group can read your tag, including people who join later. So keep it to what you'd happily say out loud in that group. Avoid phone numbers, addresses or anything personal, and remember the help centre won't let you put links in a tag anyway.
Frequently asked questions
Can a WhatsApp group admin set my member tag?
Meta describes member tags as something you give yourself, and rollout reports say admins don't approve or set them.
How long can a WhatsApp member tag be?
WhatsApp's help centre says up to 30 characters, with no special characters, checkmarks or links.
Does my member tag show in every group?
No. Tags are per group, so you can use a different tag in each group or none at all.
Will people be notified when I add a member tag?
WhatsApp's help article doesn't describe a notification. The tag simply appears beside your name in the group.
Why can't I see the add member tag option?
The feature has been rolling out gradually, so update WhatsApp and check group info again later.
