WhatsApp International Calls: How They Work and How to Dial Abroad

WhatsApp international calls work exactly like local ones: voice and video calls run over your internet connection, so WhatsApp itself doesn't charge for calling someone in another country. The one thing you must get right is saving the contact's number in full international format, with a plus sign, the country code and no leading 0.

That's how WhatsApp's Help Center explains it as of October 2026. It says calls use your phone's internet connection, not your phone plan, and they won't show on your phone bill. The catch is in the small print: data rates still apply through your mobile provider, and charges can apply while you're roaming or if you go over your data limit.

The other surprise for some people is privacy. WhatsApp calls appear in your phone's own call history, and WhatsApp says you can't stop that. You can delete them afterwards, which is covered further down.

Saving a foreign number so WhatsApp finds it

WhatsApp reads contacts from your phone's address book, so a call abroad starts there. WhatsApp says an overseas number has to be saved in full international format, not the way you'd dial it locally.

  1. Open your phone's address book and add a new contact.
  2. Start the number with a plus sign (+).
  3. Add the country code, then the area or city code, then the local number.
  4. Remove any leading 0 and any special calling codes.
  5. Save, then open WhatsApp and the contact should appear.

If you're new to adding people, our walkthrough on adding a contact on WhatsApp covers the in-app route too.

International format examples from WhatsApp

CountryCountry codeHow WhatsApp says to write it
United States1+1 408 XXX XXXX
Portugal351+351 21 XXX XXXX
Argentina54+54 9 XXX XXX XXXX: add a 9 after the country code and drop the 15 prefix, for 13 digits in total
Mexico52Put a 1 straight after +52, even for Nextel numbers

WhatsApp calls a country code the numerical prefix you need before a national number to reach another country, and it suggests searching online if you don't know the one you need. If you're saving a number in your own country, enter it as you'd normally dial it.

Making the call: voice, video and switching

Once the contact shows up, open their chat and tap the voice or video call button. WhatsApp's video calling article says a one-to-one video call can run for an unlimited duration for free, even if the other person is in another country. Mid-call, you can ask to switch a voice call to video, and the other person chooses Switch or Decline.

Call waiting works across borders too. If another WhatsApp call comes in, you'll get a notification and can answer (ending the current call) or decline and stay put, and it won't interrupt the call you're on. A normal phone call arriving during a WhatsApp call is different: WhatsApp notes that carrier charges may apply for calls made outside the app.

Group calls with family in different countries

WhatsApp's Help Center says group voice calls take up to 32 people, and WhatsApp Web supports group video calls of up to 32 members. You can start one from a group chat, from the Calls tab or by adding people to a one-to-one call. Missed group calls can still be joined if they're ongoing.

People without a WhatsApp account can join a group call as a guest through a shared call link in a desktop web browser. Guests show as their name with (Guest), and they can use audio, video, screen sharing and reactions, but they can't add or remove people or send messages.

One tip from WhatsApp worth repeating for international groups: the quality of a group video call depends on the person with the weakest connection. The detail on size and who can join is in our guide to the WhatsApp group call limit.

Calling abroad from a computer

WhatsApp Web calling lets you call contacts for free, even in another country, using your computer's internet connection. WhatsApp says it's rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet, so keep the app updated. It's supported on Windows, Linux and macOS, and works best in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, though some browser versions may not be supported.

  • You need an active internet connection on your computer.
  • You need a microphone and audio output, plus a camera for video calls.
  • WhatsApp recommends a headset, because separate speakers and microphones can cause echo.
  • If you'd rather not use a browser, WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for Mac are the native options.

Moving a call between devices

If you've linked more than one device, WhatsApp can move an active call to another device on the same account: the call connects on the new device and ends on the old one, with no limit on transfers. As of October 2026 WhatsApp says call transfer only works for group voice calls, group video calls and call links, and both devices need the latest version. You can transfer by opening the same call link on the second device or tapping Join here on the active call banner.

Privacy on international calls

WhatsApp has a setting that hides your connection details from the person you call. Go to Settings, then Privacy, and turn on Protect IP address in calls. Your calls are then relayed through WhatsApp's servers instead of connecting directly, so the person you call doesn't see your IP address. WhatsApp warns call quality might drop, and says relayed calls are still end-to-end encrypted. Group calls are always relayed by default.

To clean up afterwards, open the Calls tab, tap a call and choose Remove from call log, or use Clear call log for everything. Deleted history can't be restored unless you made a backup first. One more thing WhatsApp spells out: you can't reach emergency service numbers, such as 911 in the United States, through WhatsApp.

My take

For calling friends and family overseas, WhatsApp is hard to beat because the app itself adds no international charge. My advice: fix the number format first, since that's where most problems start, then make long calls on Wi-Fi to avoid data or roaming charges from your provider. If you call people you don't know well abroad, turn on Protect IP address in calls and accept a slightly softer line in return. And keep a normal phone handy for emergencies.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp charge for international calls?

No. WhatsApp says calls use your internet connection rather than your phone plan and won't show on your phone bill. Data rates from your mobile provider still apply, and charges may apply when roaming or over your data limit.

How do I call someone abroad on WhatsApp?

Save their number in your phone's address book with a plus sign, the country code and the full number with no leading 0. Then open their chat in WhatsApp and tap the voice or video call button.

How do I save a number in international format?

Start with +, then the country code, area code and local number, and remove any leading 0s or special calling codes. A US example from WhatsApp is +1 408 XXX XXXX.

Can I make international calls from WhatsApp Web?

Yes, where Web calling has reached you. WhatsApp says it's rolling out gradually, runs on Windows, Linux and macOS and needs a microphone, speakers and an internet connection on your computer.

How many people can join a WhatsApp group call?

WhatsApp's Help Center says group voice calls take up to 32 people, and WhatsApp Web supports group video calls of up to 32 members.

How do I hide my IP address on WhatsApp calls?
