Skillz works as a tournament platform inside other developers' mobile games: it matches you with a player of similar skill, you both play the same conditions, and the higher score wins either Gemz (free play) or real cash. The detail most people miss is that cash play is switched off in whole countries, including India, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines.
If you've played Solitaire Cube, 21 Blitz or another mobile game with cash tournaments built in, you've probably used Skillz without realising it. Skillz doesn't make the games. It runs the matchmaking, the wallet and the prizes inside them. Here's how that works, using Skillz's own help centre.
What Skillz does inside a game
Skillz describes itself as a multiplayer tournament platform that lets you compete in mobile games for real cash or virtual currency. It's free to join, and each game has free-to-enter tournaments as well as cash ones. Cash competitions are only open to players over the age of 18 in places where cash gameplay is enabled, and you need location settings switched on for Skillz to confirm that.
How Skillz matches you with an opponent
Most Skillz games are asynchronous, which is why you often finish a game and then wait for a result.
- You start a match and Skillz searches your skill band for a pending game.
- If it finds one, you become the Challenger and play exactly the same conditions the Host had.
- If it doesn't, you become the Host and your score waits for a Challenger.
- When both scores are in, the higher one wins.
Skillz says matching is based on ability level and game history, and that if no Challenger turns up within 7 days, the match is cancelled and the Host is refunded. A few games are synchronous, meaning both players play live, so they can never sit pending. If two players tie in a Head to Head match, Skillz creates a tie-breaker match and keeps going until there's a winner.
Gemz, cash and Bonus Cash explained
| Balance | What it's for | Can you withdraw it? |
|---|---|---|
| Gemz | Free-play matches, earned through daily claims, gameplay and events | No, Gemz aren't redeemable |
| Cash balance | Entry fees for cash tournaments; winnings land here | Yes, once deposits have been played once |
| Bonus Cash | Part of each cash entry fee, usually from promotions and referrals | No, and it's forfeited when you withdraw |
The Bonus Cash rule catches people out. Skillz says entry fees are typically paid 90% from real cash and 10% from Bonus Cash, refunds go back the same way, and winnings on top of your entry are 100% real cash. But the moment you make a withdrawal, any Bonus Cash left in your account is forfeited. If you're sitting on a pile of it, play it before you cash out.
How withdrawals work on Skillz
- Play deposits first. Deposited money has to be played in matches once before it becomes eligible for withdrawal.
- Deposits go back the way they came. Withdrawals up to your total deposits return to the card or PayPal account you used, oldest deposit first.
- Winnings above your deposits go by paper cheque in the US, or by PayPal if you play from another country.
- Allow 4-6 weeks. Skillz says it processes each withdrawal manually and reviews gameplay and account history, though Instant and Fast Bank withdrawals are quicker.
- Small withdrawals carry a charge below Skillz's minimum, and you can't deposit while a withdrawal is pending, though you can cancel it and play the funds instead.
Where Skillz cash games aren't available
Skillz says cash tournaments are available in about 75% of the world. That leaves some big gaps, and they matter because many readers of this site are in the countries on the list.
| Place | What Skillz says about cash play |
|---|---|
| India, Pakistan, Nigeria, the Philippines | Cash matches not available |
| Indonesia, France, Italy, Japan and other listed countries | Cash matches not available |
| United Kingdom | Cash matches not available in Solitaire Cube |
| Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, South Dakota | Cash matches not available |
| Indiana and Maine | No cash matches in card-based games like Solitaire |
| New Jersey | No cash matches in Dominoes |
So if you're in Lahore, Lagos, Manila or Mumbai, a Skillz game will still play, but only for Gemz. That's worth knowing before you download a game because an advert promised cash prizes.
The inactivity fee and staff players
Skillz says that after 6 months or more without activity, a monthly maintenance fee may be taken from your in-app balance, Bonus Cash first. It's never charged to your card without consent and isn't collected when your balance is zero. Playing a single free match resets the clock, and after 12 months or more of inactivity Skillz may close the account.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
You may also meet players with a Staff badge. Skillz says staff test live tournaments, can't withdraw or profit, and if you lose to one, your entry fee is always refunded.
My verdict on how Skillz works
Skillz is skill-based competition with real entry fees, so treat cash play as paid entertainment rather than income: you're matched against people at your level, which means you'll lose plenty too. Start with Gemz, check cash play is allowed where you live, play out any Bonus Cash before withdrawing, and expect weeks rather than days for a cheque. Frequently asked questions
Is Skillz free to play?
Yes. Skillz games are free to download, and you can play with Gemz, its free-play currency. Cash tournaments need a real-money entry fee.
Can you play Skillz for cash in India or Pakistan?
No. Skillz lists India, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Philippines among the countries where cash matches aren't available.
How long does a Skillz withdrawal take?
Skillz says to expect 4-6 weeks because each withdrawal is reviewed manually, although Instant and Fast Bank withdrawals are faster.
What happens to Bonus Cash when I withdraw?
Skillz says Bonus Cash can't be withdrawn and any remaining Bonus Cash is forfeited when you make a withdrawal.
Why is my Skillz match still pending?
Most Skillz games are asynchronous, so your score waits for a Challenger. If none is found within 7 days, Skillz cancels and refunds the match.
