WhatsApp chat lists are filters at the top of your Chats tab: All, Unread, Favorites and Groups, plus any custom lists you create. Swipe down on the Chats tab to see them, tap one to filter, and tap the plus to make your own list of people or groups.
If your WhatsApp is a wall of family groups, client chats, school parents and delivery updates, chat lists are the fix. They sit as small buttons at the top of your Chats tab and filter what you see with one tap. You can use the four built-in lists or make your own, such as Work, Family or a list for one project. It's the closest WhatsApp gets to folders, and once it's set up you'll wonder how you managed without it.
The four default lists
| List | What it shows |
|---|---|
| All | Every chat, the normal view |
| Unread | Chats you haven't opened yet or have marked as unread |
| Favorites | Chats with contacts you've added as favourites |
| Groups | All your group chats in one place |
Swipe down on the Chats tab to see the lists. The one you've selected turns green, and it stays applied until you pick another list or close and reopen WhatsApp.
How to create your own chat list
- Open the Chats tab and swipe down to show your lists.
- Tap the plus button. You may need to swipe along the lists to find it.
- Give your list a name, such as Work or Family.
- Tap Add people or groups and choose the chats to include.
- Save the list. It appears alongside the default ones.
How Favorites work
Favorites deserve a closer look because they show up in more than one place. WhatsApp says contacts you add as favourites appear in the Chats tab, in the Favorites list, and in the Calls tab under Favorites. So adding your partner or your business partner as a favourite gives you a fast route to both their messages and a call.
Adding a favourite is done from the Favorites list or from the Calls tab. Pick the handful of people you message most, not everyone you know, or the list stops being useful. Review it every few months as your circle changes, and remove anyone you no longer need one tap away.
Lists vs pinned chats vs archive
| Tool | What it does | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Lists | Filter your Chats tab to a group of conversations | Default lists plus your own |
| Pinned chats | Keep chats at the very top of the All view | Up to three chats |
| Archive | Hide chats from the main list until you need them | Archived chats stay in their own section |
I use all three together. Pin the three chats you can't miss, archive the noisy groups you only check weekly, and use lists to switch between work mode and home mode.
A simple setup that works
- Work: client chats and project groups.
- Family: family members and the family group.
- Community: clubs, neighbours, school parents.
- Favorites: the few people you'd always answer straight away.
Then use the Unread list as your inbox. Tap it, clear what's there, and you'll know you haven't missed anything without scrolling past every group.
Using lists if you run a business on WhatsApp
Lists are especially handy if one number handles both customers and your personal life. Make a Clients list with every customer chat and project group, and a Suppliers list for the people you order from. During working hours, tap Clients and you see only what needs a business reply. In the evening, switch to Family and the work chats disappear from view without being muted, archived or deleted. Nothing changes for the people messaging you, but your own screen becomes far calmer.
Keep the lists short. A list holding forty chats is just another full inbox. If a list keeps growing, split it, for example Clients Active and Clients Past, so the one you open every morning only holds the conversations you're working on right now.
Things lists can't do
- You can't reorder chats inside All, Unread or Groups. They follow WhatsApp's normal order.
- Lists don't mute anything. If a group in your Community list is noisy, mute it separately.
- Lists only change how you view chats. Nobody in the chat knows which list they're in.
Lists not showing?
- Swipe down on the Chats tab. On some versions the lists hide until you do.
- Update WhatsApp. Lists rolled out gradually, so older versions may not have them.
- If you can't find the plus, swipe along the row of lists to reach the end.
If WhatsApp is slow or chats won't load at all, that's a different problem: see why WhatsApp isn't ringing for notification fixes, and how to find someone on WhatsApp if a chat seems to have vanished.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
My verdict
Spend five minutes setting up two or three custom lists and adding your closest contacts as favourites. Use Unread as your daily inbox, pin the chats that matter most, and your Chats tab stops being a scroll of everything at once.
