What Does WFH Mean? Meaning, Examples and Etiquette

WFH means working from home. People use it in job ads, calendars, chat statuses and out-of-office messages to say they're doing their job from their own home instead of the office. Wikipedia treats it as another name for remote work, and hybrid roles split time between home and the office.

If a job ad says "WFH Fridays" or a colleague's chat status reads "WFH today", you don't need a decoder ring. It's one of the most common abbreviations in modern offices, and it still trips up job seekers, new starters and people whose first language isn't English. I work with a lot of small-business owners who run teams from their kitchen tables, so I see this shorthand daily. Here's what WFH means, where you'll spot it, how it differs from similar terms and when it's better to write the words out.

The WFH meaning in plain English

WFH stands for "working from home" (or "work from home", depending on the sentence). Wiktionary lists it as an initialism for working remotely, and notes it can also be used as a verb, as in "I'm WFHing this week". Wikipedia treats "work from home" and "WFH" as another name for remote work, which it describes as working from one's home or another space rather than from an office or workplace.

Two other meanings exist, but you'll rarely meet them in an office. Wiktionary also lists WFH as "work for hire" in US copyright law and as the World Federation of Hemophilia. If the message is about your diary or your desk, it's the working-from-home one.

Where you'll see WFH at work

  • Job ads: "Hybrid, three days in the office, two days WFH" tells you how the role is split.
  • Calendars: a colleague may block a day with "WFH" so the team knows where they are.
  • Chat apps: Slack and Teams statuses often say "WFH" instead of a longer note.
  • Out-of-office replies: "I'm WFH on Thursday, so email is best" avoids confusion about whether someone is reachable.
  • Team rotas: a shared spreadsheet might mark each person as Office or WFH for the week.

It appears in speech too. People say "I'll be WFH tomorrow" in meetings, usually spelling out the three letters.

Example WFH messages

These are invented examples to show how people use it:

  • Example: "Morning all, I'm WFH today, back in the office on Wednesday."
  • Example (calendar entry): "WFH, available on Teams all morning."
  • Example (job ad): "This role offers one WFH day each week after probation."
  • Example: "Can you WFH on Monday? The boiler engineer is coming to the office."
  • Example: "Sorry for the slow reply, I was WFH with no signal."

WFH versus remote and hybrid

The terms overlap, but they aren't identical. A short guide:

TermWhat it usually meansWhere you'll see it
WFHWorking from your own home, often on set daysChats, calendars, rotas
RemoteWorking away from a central office, which may be home, a cafe or a shared spaceJob titles and company policies
HybridA mix of office days and days away from the officeJob ads and contracts
Fully remoteNo expected office days at allJob ads for distributed teams

Wikipedia describes hybrid as a flexible model that lets people split their time between the office and working elsewhere. If you're hunting for a job, always check what a company means by each term, because the same word can describe quite different arrangements. My guide to finding remote jobs covers how to read those ads, and how to spot legitimate remote roles is worth a look before you apply.

WFH etiquette for messages and meetings

Working from home blurs the line between "available" and "off", so clear messages help everyone.

  • Post your WFH status before the working day starts, not halfway through the morning.
  • Say how people can reach you: "WFH, on Teams and phone all day" is clearer than "WFH" alone.
  • If you're WFH but need to step out, update your status rather than leaving colleagues waiting.
  • Turn your camera on for meetings when the team expects it, and mute when you're not speaking.
  • Don't treat WFH as a reason to be unreachable. It means a different location, not a day off.

For managers and business owners, a short written policy saves arguments. Say which roles can work from home, which days need an office presence and how people should log it.

When to write out work from home instead of WFH

Inside a team that uses it daily, WFH is fine. Spell it out in a few situations:

  • In a first email to a client or recruiter who doesn't know your habits.
  • In contracts, policies and formal letters, where abbreviations can be read two ways.
  • When your reader isn't a native English speaker and may not know the shorthand.
  • In job ads you write yourself, at least once, before you use the abbreviation.

Wording matters in a role description. "Work from home" can sound like a promise of full-time remote work, while "WFH one day a week" sets a clear limit. Be as specific as you can about days and expectations.

How to reply to a WFH message

You rarely need to say more than a short acknowledgement. Try "Thanks, noted" or "No problem, I'll message you on Teams." If you need something that has to be done in person, say so politely: "Is there any chance you could come in on Friday instead?" Keep your tone friendly, because a note about someone's working location isn't a request for justification.

How do I set a WFH status at work?

Most chat tools let you add a status message, and most calendars let you create an all-day event. Write WFH plus how people can reach you, and set it before the day starts.
