Heart Hands Emoji Meaning: What 🫶 Says About Love, Support and Thanks

The heart hands emoji 🫶 means love, support and thanks, the gesture of two hands curved into a heart shape. Its official Unicode name is Heart Hands, and it was approved in Unicode 14.0 in 2021, so it's a recent arrival. The catch: it's warmer and less romantic than a red heart, which is exactly why fans, creators and even sports teams use it to thank their followers.

Heart hands is the emoji for 'I appreciate you'. You'll see it under supportive comments, in thank-you posts and in messages to friends after a hard week. It's affectionate without being intense, which makes it one of the most useful newer emojis to know.

Love, support and thanks in one gesture

Emojipedia describes Heart Hands as two hands forming a heart shape, used to express love and support. Dictionary.com says it's often used to express love or affection towards someone or something, and that it's used both in texting and on social media.

Its examples show the range. One person uses it to say country music has always had their heart. Another uses it after bringing a new cat home. A creator uses it to thank followers for their love and support after a break. In every case it means 'I love this, and I'm grateful'.

The 'millennial hand heart' shape

Emojipedia notes that the current design shows two hands curved into a C shape with the thumbs touching at the bottom, a gesture it says is stereotypically called the 'millennial hand heart'. Dictionary.com describes the same shape: the thumbs form the bottom of the heart and the other fingers curl to form the top. Dictionary.com also says the design is consistent across platforms, showing yellow hands, so what you send is close to what they see.

René Joythe's proposal and Unicode 14.0

Dictionary.com says the emoji was proposed in December 2019 by René Joythe. The proposal described the gesture as 'a symbol to empower against mean comments and negative vibes on social media'. That's a lovely origin, and it explains why 🫶 so often turns up as a show of support under someone's post.

Emojipedia lists Heart Hands as approved in Unicode 14.0 in 2021 and added to Emoji 14.0 the same year. If a friend on an old phone sees a blank box instead, their software hasn't caught up yet.

Concert stages and the Gen Z half-heart

The gesture is older than the emoji. Dictionary.com says it's been used since at least the early 2010s, when musicians such as Taylor Swift popularised it by making it often on stage. It also notes that Gen Z commonly does a related version where two people each make half a heart with one hand, and together they form a full heart.

So 🫶 carries a bit of concert-crowd energy. It's the gesture a performer makes to thousands of fans, shrunk down to send to one person.

Heart hands vs finger heart vs red heart

There's another heart gesture on the keyboard that's easy to confuse. Emojipedia says 🫰 Hand with Index Finger and Thumb Crossed can show a 'finger heart', a gesture popularised in the 2010s by South Korean celebrities, including K-pop stars. Emojipedia also notes it can mean snapping fingers or, in some contexts, talk about cash or a request to be paid, so it's less clear-cut.

If you want a quick list of the emojis people send most, I've put together a guide to the most popular emojis.

How to reply when someone sends you 🫶

Because heart hands is about appreciation, the reply doesn't need to be clever. If a friend sends it after you've helped them, a simple 'anytime' or a heart back is perfect. If a follower drops it under your post, a like or a short 'thank you so much' is enough. If someone sends it after you've shared bad news, they're telling you they're on your side, so a quick 'that means a lot' closes the loop kindly.

The one thing I wouldn't do is read romance into it on its own. Heart hands from a crush is sweet, but it's closer to 'you're lovely' than 'I love you'. Let the words around it, and how often they message, tell you the rest.

Choosing a skin tone

Dictionary.com notes that Heart Hands can be customised with a range of skin tones. On most phones, press and hold the emoji on your keyboard to see the options. Pick whichever feels right for you; many people use the tone closest to their own, and the default yellow is always fine.

Made-up heart hands messages

These are made-up messages to show how it's used, not real chats:

  • 'Thank you all for the birthday messages 🫶' Gratitude to friends and followers.
  • 'Proud of you for getting through this week 🫶' Support for a friend.
  • 'Best concert of my life 🫶🫶' Love for an artist.
  • 'Our first orders shipped today, thank you 🫶' A small business thanking customers.
  • 'You're the best, honestly 🫶' Simple appreciation.

It also makes a lovely line on a WhatsApp status; there are more ideas for WhatsApp statuses if you need inspiration.

Why heart hands suits creators and small businesses

If you run a business account, 🫶 is one of my favourite emojis to use. It says thank you warmly without any romantic tone, so it fits replies to reviews, thank-you posts and messages to a community that's backed you. It's also a natural choice for supportive replies when a customer shares their own win.

Where I'd skip it: in complaint replies, legal or billing messages and anything formal. If you've reacted with it by mistake on a post where it doesn't fit, most apps let you remove it; here's how to undo a reaction on Facebook. Otherwise, use it freely and often.
