On YouTube TV, VOD means video on demand: episodes and films the network makes available to watch any time, not your own recording. YouTube TV says you typically can't fast forward through VOD ads, which show as a yellow progress bar with a small ad icon. Your DVR recording is a separate version, and you can skip its ads.
That's why VOD causes so much frustration. You add a show, press play, and you're stuck watching adverts you thought you'd recorded past. Here's what's going on, from YouTube TV Help and a YouTube TV Product Expert's community guide, read in October 2026.
VOD vs DVR on YouTube TV
| VOD (video on demand) | DVR (your recording) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it comes from | The network makes it available | YouTube TV records it when it airs |
| When it appears | Can be there before the show airs | Only after the episode has aired |
| Ads | Yellow progress bar, small ad icon, typically can't fast forward | You can fast forward through ads |
| How to tell | VOD shows above the playback bar | DVR shows above the playback bar |
Why YouTube TV shows VOD instead of your recording
YouTube TV Help explains that when you add a programme to your library, some episodes may be available to watch immediately, even if they haven't recently aired live. Those are on-demand versions from the network. The Product Expert guide adds three common reasons you only see VOD:
- It hasn't aired yet: some networks release VOD before the broadcast, so there's nothing to record until it airs.
- You've just added the show: the next airing will be recorded, but past episodes may only exist as VOD.
- Bad metadata: the recording exists but has been filed in the wrong place, often under Extras.
How to find your DVR recording
- Open the show in your Library.
- Look under the episode thumbnail for Choose a Version. If it's there, pick the DVR version.
- If not, open the season picker and check Extras. Misfiled recordings often end up there.
- Start playback and check the label above the playback bar: it should say DVR, not VOD.
If the recording still isn't there and the episode has aired, report it from the video player. YouTube TV says you can report a bad recording there.
Yellow ad lines on a recording?
Here's one that confuses people. The Product Expert guide says that if you're watching the recording, with DVR above the playback bar, you can skip through the ad breaks even if yellow lines show. If it says VOD, you're on the network's version and the ads usually stay.
How YouTube TV recording works
- Tap Add next to a show, team or event, and all current and upcoming airings are recorded to your Library, reruns included.
- YouTube TV includes DVR without storage space limits.
- If you add a programme while an episode is on, the recording starts from that point. If a rerun airs, the partial recording is replaced by a full episode.
- Some sporting events may not be available to record.

Ads on YouTube TV: what you can and can't skip
| What you're watching | Can you fast forward ads? |
|---|---|
| Live TV | No, unless you paused and are catching up to live |
| Your recordings (DVR) | Yes |
| Video on demand (VOD) | Typically no |
YouTube TV also notes that YouTube Premium doesn't remove these: within YouTube TV, Premium members still see ads on live TV and recorded content, and may also see them on on-demand programmes.
When VOD says you need an add-on
Sometimes a VOD episode asks you to subscribe to an add-on, such as a premium channel. The Product Expert guide explains that the VOD version can be exclusive to that add-on, while your DVR recording either hasn't aired yet or is filed under Extras. Check Extras before you pay for anything.
Watching VOD on purpose
VOD isn't all bad. It's handy for catching up on a series you've only just found, because episodes can be there before you've recorded anything. Just accept the ads. If you're weighing up whether the service is worth it, here's what YouTube TV costs.

My take
Look at the label above the playback bar every time something won't let you skip. VOD means you're on the network's copy. Switch to the DVR version through Choose a Version or Extras, and the fast forward button comes back.
