Best Photo Scanner App (2026): 10 Apps for Old Prints

The best photo scanner app turns a printed photo into a clean digital copy without glare, wonky edges or lost detail. Check how it handles glossy prints and whole album pages, where scans are stored and what the free version allows. Ten apps follow in no particular order, plus a routine for scanning a box of family photos.

Every family has a box of prints somewhere: holidays, weddings, school photos, faces nobody can quite name any more. Scanning them on a phone is quicker than most people think, and a good app removes glare and crops each picture for you.

The ten apps below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Some are built for old photos, others are document scanners that handle prints well. Each description comes from the app's own website or store listing, re-checked today. Once your best-loved photos are digital, my guide to making a photo collage for a story is a lovely way to share them.

Photo scanner apps compared

In the free plan column, Yes means the app's own site or store listing describes a free app or free version, Trial only means a time-limited trial and No means neither is stated. Many free scanner apps limit daily scans or keep restoration tools for an upgrade.

Scanning is only half the job

Here's advice from people who preserve photos for a living. The Library of Congress recommends making at least two copies of your selected photos, more is better, keeping one on your computer and others on separate media or internet storage, stored in different locations as far apart as practical.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

What that means for you: a scan that lives only inside one app isn't really preserved. Export your scans to a folder, keep a second copy somewhere else, and only then think about whether the prints can go back in the loft.

Photo scanners, document scanners and restoration apps

Photo scanner apps are built for prints: they remove glare from glossy paper, detect several photos on an album page and crop each one. Document scanners handle prints too, and they're handy if you also scan letters, certificates or recipes. Restoration apps work on scans you've already made, sharpening faces or adding colour to black and white pictures.

For a family archive, start with a photo scanner. Add a restoration app only for the handful of precious pictures that are badly faded.

Scanning a box of family photos

  1. Sort prints into piles by decade or event before you start.
  2. Wipe dust off each print with a soft, dry cloth.
  3. Scan in good, even daylight away from direct sun.
  4. Hold the phone flat and parallel to the print.
  5. Name files with the year and event as you go.
  6. Export everything and keep two copies in different places.

Sharing scans with family

  • Ask for names. Older relatives can tell you who's in each picture; add the names to the file.
  • Send in batches. My guide to sending a photo on Messenger covers phone and computer.
  • Make a shared album. Let family add their own prints and stories.
  • Keep the backs. Scan handwriting on the back of a photo too; it's often the only record of the date.

Do you make a photo scanner app? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing a photo scanner app

If you've got a few dozen prints, a free scanner app and an afternoon will do. For a big collection, pick an app that handles whole album pages and lets you export in bulk, because you'll want those photos out of the app and into your own folders.

Don't throw prints away the moment they're scanned. Check the copies, back them up twice, and keep the originals that matter most; paper has already lasted decades.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free photo scanner app?

Several apps here are free to download, some with daily scan limits. Restoration and bulk tools often need an upgrade.

How do I scan glossy photos without glare?

Use an app that combines several shots to remove glare, scan in soft daylight and avoid overhead lights.

Can I scan a whole album page at once?

Some apps detect several photos on one page and crop each into its own file.

Is a phone scan as good as a flatbed scanner?

For sharing and family archives, a careful phone scan is often good enough. A flatbed scanner captures more detail for enlargements.

Where should I store my scanned photos?

The Library of Congress suggests at least two copies, kept on separate media and in different locations.

Can an app repair old, faded photos?

Restoration apps can sharpen faces and add colour, but they work best on a good scan to begin with.
