The green dot on Instagram means that person is active right now. It's part of Instagram's Activity Status feature and appears next to profile pictures in your messages. The catch is that it works both ways: if you hide your own green dot, you also lose the ability to see anyone else's.
It's one of the smallest symbols in the app, and one of the most misunderstood. People read all sorts of things into it, from "they're ignoring me" to "they're talking to someone else". Here's what Instagram's Help Center says it means, who can see yours and how to switch it off.
Activity Status: what Instagram's help page says
Instagram's Help Center explains that when your Activity Status is on, people you follow and anyone you message will see when you were last active or currently active on Instagram. If it's on, either a green dot or a timestamp showing when you were last active appears next to your profile picture in messaging.
So the green dot is the "right now" version, and the timestamp, like "Active 2h ago", is the "recently" version. Techlicious adds that the dot shows up in the row of profile photos across the top of your DM inbox and next to names in your conversation list.
Who can see your green dot, and who can't
The audience is narrower than people fear. Your dot isn't shown to the whole of Instagram. According to the Help Center, it's visible to people you follow and people you message. Techlicious points out that it only works when both of you have Activity Status turned on, so if you can see someone's dot, they can usually see yours.
| Situation | Can they see your green dot? |
|---|---|
| Someone you follow, with Activity Status on | Yes |
| Someone you've messaged, with Activity Status on | Yes |
| A stranger who has never messaged you and you don't follow | No |
| Anyone, after you turn Activity Status off | No |
| Someone who has turned their own Activity Status off | No, and you can't see theirs either |
That two way rule is the reason the dot can seem to vanish. If a friend's green dot never appears, it doesn't mean they've blocked or restricted you. The most likely explanation is that they've switched Activity Status off, or that you have. Check your own setting first before you read anything into it.
Turning the green dot off in a few taps
The Help Center gives these steps. Menu wording can shift slightly between app versions, but the path has been stable:
- Go to your profile and open the menu, then Settings.
- Under How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show Activity Status.
- Switch the toggle off.
Instagram's Help Center is clear about the trade off: once it's off, you won't see when accounts that follow you or accounts you chat with are active, and you won't be able to see anyone else's Activity Status. It's an all or nothing swap. If you use Snapchat too, the setting there is separate, and my guide on turning off active status on Snapchat covers that app.
The green ring is a different thing: Close Friends
Here's the mix up I see most often. A green dot and a green ring aren't the same. The dot means someone is online. The ring, around a profile picture in the stories bar, is about Close Friends.
Instagram's Help Center says that when someone adds you to their Close Friends list, you'll see a Close friends label on their notes, reels or stories, and you may also see a green ring around their profile photo. Techlicious explains it plainly: a green ring means they posted a story to their Close Friends list and you're on it. The Help Center also notes that people aren't notified when they're added or removed, so that ring is often the only clue.
| Symbol | Where you see it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Small green dot | Next to a profile picture in DMs | Active right now |
| Green ring | Around a profile picture in the stories bar | A Close Friends story you're allowed to see |
| Gradient pink and orange ring | Stories bar | A new story you haven't watched |
Reading too much into someone being active
A green dot only tells you the app is open. It doesn't say who they're talking to, whether they've seen your message or what they're doing. Someone can be active because they're scrolling reels, replying to a work account or checking a notification. If you've ever felt the status was off, you're not imagining it: my piece on whether Instagram activity status is accurate looks at why it can lag or linger.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Seen labels in a chat are the better clue for whether a message has been read, and Techlicious notes those are shown as text, like "Seen just now", rather than a symbol.
It's also worth knowing that the dot appears in messaging, not on someone's profile page or under their posts. If you're looking at a profile and wondering whether they're online, you won't find the answer there. Open your DMs instead and look at the row of profile pictures at the top.
Should a business account show its green dot?
For most small businesses, I'd leave Activity Status on. A customer who sees you're active is more likely to send that question now rather than later, and quick replies win sales in DMs. The exception is if you can't answer promptly. A green dot next to an unanswered enquiry looks worse than no dot at all. If your inbox is busy and replies take a day, switch it off, set expectations in your bio and answer in batches. Just remember you'll lose sight of other people's status too. If your team shares one business login, agree who answers DMs when the dot is showing, so a customer never waits while you look online.
