What Does Sigma Mean? Slang, Memes and the Greek Letter

Sigma is the eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet and a maths symbol for adding values together. In slang, it comes from sigma male, a manosphere term for an independent lone wolf. Among teens it now often means excellent or works as a joke word, as in what the sigma.

Sigma might be the most confusing word in a teenager's vocabulary right now, because it means three or four different things depending on who's saying it. A maths teacher uses it one way. An online self-improvement video uses it another. A twelve-year-old shouting "what the sigma" across the playground means something else again. If you're a parent, a teacher or a business owner trying to keep up, here's a clear, neutral guide to what sigma means, where each meaning came from and whether it belongs anywhere near your brand.

Sigma: from Greek letter to maths symbol

Before it was slang, sigma was a letter. Wikipedia describes it as the eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet, with an uppercase form, a lowercase form and a special lowercase form used at the end of a word. Dictionary.com notes that the English letter S comes from it.

In maths, the capital sigma symbol means "add these up", which is why you'll see it in summation formulas. The lowercase version stands for standard deviation in statistics, according to Wikipedia. So if your child mentions sigma in a maths lesson, there's a good chance they mean the symbol.

How the sigma male idea began

The slang sense starts with the phrase "sigma male". Dictionary.com explains that it comes from masculinist online communities, often called the manosphere, where men are ranked using Greek letters. The alpha is cast as the dominant, outgoing leader, and the sigma is described as a successful man who's independent, self-reliant and happy to go his own way, a so-called lone wolf.

Dictionary.com credits the term to Theodore Robert Beale, a far-right writer known as Vox Day, who began using it on his blog in 2010. A relationship book with the phrase in its title followed in 2014. Dictionary.com and Wikipedia both describe how a set of posts in 2021 made the term go viral, with a lot of people mocking it at the same time.

It's worth being clear about the context. Wikipedia notes that the alpha and beta framework the idea rests on is widely regarded by scientists as a myth or an oversimplification, and the concept has drawn criticism for promoting narrow ideas about how men should be. I'm describing the term here so you can recognise it, not endorsing it.

Sigma as a teen joke and meme

Here's the part that matters most to parents. Among younger teens, sigma has largely drifted away from its original meaning. Merriam-Webster's slang entry says the word can now simply mean excellent, and that it's widely used as a nonsense word and meme. It credits a viral song from 2023 with spreading this general sense.

Merriam-Webster also describes the phrase "what the sigma", which caught on in 2024 after a video of a cartoon character saying it. It works as a comic stand-in for "what the heck", and Merriam-Webster notes it got attention when school pupils reportedly used it to baffle teachers. Wikipedia adds that a lot of sigma content is satire, poking fun at the manosphere and so-called grindset videos.

In short, when a child calls something sigma, they're usually being silly or saying it's cool. They're rarely signing up to an ideology. That said, if you notice a teenager watching a lot of sincere "sigma mindset" content, it's worth a calm conversation about what those videos are selling.

Sigma in chats and videos: examples

These are invented examples to show the range of uses. None of them are real:

  • Example (praise): "You got full marks? That's so sigma."
  • Example (joke): "What the sigma is that hat?"
  • Example (ironic caption): "Sigma morning routine: wake up at noon, eat cereal."
  • Example (maths): "Remember the sigma symbol means add every value together."
  • Example (sincere, from self-help content): "Be a sigma, don't follow the crowd."

The third example shows the most common teenage tone: exaggerated, self-mocking and not meant seriously.

Sigma in brand content: think twice

From a marketing point of view, sigma is a risky word for most businesses.

  • It carries baggage. Even if you mean it as a joke, some people associate it with the manosphere and its views on men and women. A brand can easily look like it's taking sides.
  • The ironic meaning moves fast. Teen slang that's funny one term can sound dated or cringeworthy the next, especially from a company.
  • Your audience may split. Younger followers read it as a joke, older followers may read it as sincere, and both can be put off.

There are narrow exceptions. A maths tutor, a statistics course or a brand with Sigma in its name has an obvious, innocent reason to use the word. For everyone else, if you want to say something's excellent, plain words work across every audience.

Talking to your kids about sigma

  • Ask what they mean by it. Most of the time you'll get a shrug and "it's just a joke".
  • If it's the meme sense, laugh along. Showing you know the joke often takes the fun out of using it to confuse adults.
  • If they're quoting sincere sigma male content, talk about where those ideas come from and who profits from the videos.
  • Keep the tone curious, not alarmed. Teenagers share more when they don't feel judged.
