On YouTube, a Premiere means a new video is shown for the first time at a set moment, so you and other viewers can watch it together in real time with chat open. It isn't a live stream, because the video is already uploaded. You can rewind, but not skip past what's aired.
You've probably seen a video on YouTube with a Premiere label, a countdown clock and a chat box beside it, and wondered whether it's a live stream. It isn't quite, and the difference matters whether you're a viewer deciding whether to wait or a creator planning a launch.
I'll explain what YouTube's help centre says a Premiere is, what you'll see as a viewer, and how to set one up for your own channel.
What a Premiere means on YouTube
The official help page describes a Premiere as a way for you and your viewers to watch a new video together in real time. The video is already uploaded and finished, so it isn't a live stream, but it plays at a set moment with everyone watching at once and chatting alongside it.
Before it starts, viewers can set a reminder, comment and chat on the video's watch page. That's the clue to look for: a watch page with a countdown rather than a play button that works straight away.
What you see as a viewer when a Premiere is coming up
- The watch page is public, so anyone with the link can open it before the start time.
- Premieres can appear in search, on the home page and in recommendations.
- You can set a reminder. YouTube's help says viewers who do this get a notification about 30 minutes before the start and another when it begins.
- You can comment and chat. Super Chats are available if the creator has turned them on.
- If the creator uploaded a trailer, it plays on the watch page while you wait.
What happens while a YouTube Premiere is playing
Everyone watches together in real time, and comments and live chat stay open. You can rewind, but you can't skip ahead past what has been shown live. That's the main thing that separates it from an ordinary upload, where you can jump to any point straight away.
What happens after a YouTube Premiere ends
According to the help page, the video stays on the channel as a regular upload. Chat replay is available for viewers, the Premiere's view count transfers to the video, and the creator can see how it performed in YouTube Analytics in Studio. So a Premiere isn't a one-off event that disappears afterwards.
Premiere versus live stream versus a normal upload on YouTube
| Premiere | Ordinary upload | |
|---|---|---|
| Video | Already made and uploaded | Already made and uploaded |
| Start | Starts at a set time with a countdown | Available as soon as it's published |
| Chat | Live chat during the Premiere | Comments only |
| Skipping ahead | Not past what has aired live | Anywhere |
A live stream is different again, because the creator is broadcasting as it happens. If you're a creator who wants to send live viewers to your Premiere, the help page mentions Live Redirect for that.
How to set up a YouTube Premiere on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Create, then Upload videos.
- Select your video and enter its details.
- To start straight away, click Save or publish, then Public, then Set as instant Premiere. The video premieres once processing finishes.
- To pick a time instead, click Schedule, enter a date and time and check Set as Premiere.
- Click Set up Premiere to choose a countdown theme and length.
- Click Done or Schedule.
The countdown runs for the length you chose and starts at the scheduled time. If the Premiere is set for noon, the countdown begins at noon. The countdown theme isn't included in the video afterwards.
How to set up a YouTube Premiere in the app
When you upload from the YouTube app, go to the Set visibility page and choose Set as Premiere. If you haven't uploaded from your phone before, my walkthrough of uploading a video to YouTube covers the basic upload first.
What YouTube Premieres can't do
- Shorts aren't supported for Premieres.
- Videos that are 360 or VR180, or have output above 1080p, aren't supported.
- If your account has a Community Guidelines strike, the Premiere is set to private for the penalty period and has to be rescheduled after the freeze ends.
The help article doesn't explain how to edit or cancel a Premiere once it's set, so open the video in Studio and look at its settings, or use the help centre if you can't find them. Menus vary by app version.
Planning a YouTube Premiere around your audience
If you're a creator or a small business, think about who you want in the room. A Premiere works best when you can tell people about it first: mention the date in your newsletter, pin it on your social profiles and share the public watch page link, which YouTube says you can do before the start. The reminder button does the rest of the work for you.

It's also worth watching the chat at the start. A few friendly replies from you in the first minutes encourage others to join in, and you'll pick up questions that make good ideas for your next video.
Premiere or private link: choosing how to launch a YouTube video
A Premiere suits a launch where you want people there together: a course lesson, a product demo or a new episode. If you'd rather share a video quietly with a few people, an unlisted upload is the simpler route, and I've explained the difference in what unlisted means on YouTube.
YouTube's tips article suggests scheduling a Premiere ahead of time so people around the world can see the thumbnail in their feeds, which is sensible if your audience spans time zones.
