What Does PPL Mean? People in Texts Since 1985, and the PPLs That Aren't

PPL in a text means 'people'. Wiktionary lists ppl as internet and text slang, an abbreviation of people, as in 'ppl are so nice here'. It's a plural word, so it takes 'are', not 'is'. Outside chats, PPL can mean a private pilot licence, and in grammar, ppl. is short for participle.

PPL is the kind of abbreviation people use without thinking: drop the vowels, keep the shape of the word. It's so ordinary that it's easy to forget how long it's been around. Here's what it means, how far back it goes, how to use it without sounding sloppy, and the PPLs that have nothing to do with people at all.

ppl is short for people

Wiktionary defines ppl as a plural-only abbreviation of people, used in internet slang and text messaging. Its newest example comes from a May 2024 Cosmopolitan gift guide, where a writer says of some serving bowls that ppl ask where they're from all the time. That's the everyday use: a casual stand-in for 'people'.

PPL is older than texting

This is the surprising part. Wiktionary's earliest example of ppl is from 25 November 1985, in a Usenet post on the net.general group. The writer, Steve Wall, was sharing a summary of replies about internet mail and wrote that there was a huge amount of mail and ppl are really interested in this.

That's long before mobile phones had keyboards. It tells you ppl wasn't invented to save thumbs on a phone. It was already part of how people typed quickly in the earliest online communities, and it simply carried over into texting, chat apps and social media.

How ppl gets used in messages

  • 'Ppl are so rude today.' A complaint about others in general.
  • 'How many ppl are coming?' A head count for plans.
  • 'Some ppl just don't get it.' A pointed comment, often about someone specific.
  • 'My ppl!' A shout-out to friends, family or your crowd.

These are made-up examples. The last one is worth a note. 'My ppl' or 'my people' is used affectionately for the group you belong to, like fans of the same band or friends from the same town. It's warmer than plain 'people'.

Why people shorten 'people' at all

People is a six-letter word with two repeated letters, which makes it a natural one to compress. Drop the vowels and you're left with ppl, which still looks like the word. That's the same trick behind other vowel-less shorthand like smth for something, pls for please and msg for message.

It also shows up in usernames and captions where space is tight. A bio like 'helping ppl grow online' saves characters on platforms with short limits. And because it's been around since the 1980s, almost every generation online recognises it, which isn't true of newer slang. It's one of the few abbreviations your parents and your teenagers will both read the same way.

The one place it trips people up is speech. Nobody says 'ppl' out loud; it's read as 'people'. If you hear someone say 'pee-pee-ell', they're probably talking about a pilot licence.

Context almost always settles it. In a group chat, a comment thread or a caption, ppl is people. On a flying school site, a CV or an aviation forum, PPL is the licence. The two rarely meet.

Getting the grammar right with ppl

Because ppl means people, it's plural. 'Ppl are' and 'ppl were' are right; 'ppl is' sounds off for the same reason 'people is' does. It also doesn't need an apostrophe or an s: 'ppls' isn't standard, though you'll occasionally see 'ppl's' used for 'people's', as in 'other ppl's business'.

Capitals don't change the meaning in a chat. 'PPL' and 'ppl' both mean people. Lower case is more common, partly because PPL in capitals has other meanings, which we'll get to.

The pilot licence is the one you'll meet most outside texting. Wiktionary lists PPL as an aviation initialism of private pilot licence, the qualification that lets someone fly a light aircraft privately. On a flying club website or a pilot's profile, 'working towards my PPL' means flying lessons, not people.

Pipil is a nice one to know. It's a Nahua language of El Salvador, and Wiktionary notes its ISO code is ppl. So on a language database, ppl is a language, not a crowd.

Is ppl too casual for work?

In a quick team chat, ppl is fine: 'How many ppl on the call?' In anything a client, customer or manager might read, write people in full. It's only three more letters, and abbreviations like ppl can make a message look rushed. The same goes for social posts aimed at buyers. A caption like 'ppl keep asking about this' is fine for a casual brand. A product page that says 'ppl love it' looks unfinished.

If you're writing to someone whose first language isn't English, spelling it out helps too. Short forms are easy to misread, and people is clearer than ppl for everyone. For other shorthand that sits well in work chats, FYI and BTW are more widely understood.

How to reply to ppl

You don't need to do anything special. Answer the message. If someone's complaining that 'ppl are so annoying', they probably want sympathy, not a debate. If they're asking how many ppl are coming, give a number. And if someone thanks you with 'you're one of my ppl', that's a compliment, so take it. A simple NP or 'same to you' fits.
