What Does OTP Mean? One True Pairing in Fandoms and One-Time Password for Logins

OTP has two big meanings: in fandoms it stands for "one true pairing", your favourite fictional couple, and in tech it stands for "one-time password", the short code you get by text or app to log in. A fan posting "my OTP" means a couple they love, while a text from your bank or an app with an OTP inside is a security code you should never share.

Few acronyms live such different lives. Some people searching OTP have just seen it on Tumblr or TikTok; others have a code on their phone and a nervous feeling. Here's both, starting with the fans.

OTP as "one true pairing" in fandom

Dictionary.com defines OTP as the term for a person's favourite fictional romantic relationship. It's part of shipping culture: to ship two characters is to be heavily invested in them becoming a couple. Your OTP is the ship that beats all your other ships. Dictionary.com notes you can now have more than one OTP across different fandoms, but within one fandom, the OTP still wins.

You'll see it in fan edits on TikTok, Tumblr posts, fan fiction tags and comment sections under trailers. It works for TV, films, books, anime and games, and sometimes for real couples too, when fans love two celebrities together. In every case, it's about the pairing a fan loves most.

Shipping, from The X-Files to fan fiction

Dictionary.com traces "shipping" to The X-Files in the late 1990s, short for "relationshipper", the fans who wanted Mulder and Scully together. The idea is older: Star Trek fan fiction pairing Kirk and Spock was first published in 1967. OTP itself has been used online since at least the early 2000s, with a LiveJournal use in 2002, and Dictionary.com says the phrase may go back to Star Trek fanzines in the mid-1980s.

Wiktionary records the same fandom meaning, describing it as the romantic pairing preferred by an author or reader of fan fiction, with NOTP as its opposite. Shipping arguments between fans can get heated, which is why "don't come for my OTP" is such a common phrase.

That history is why OTP still feels at home on fan sites first and social apps second.

NOTP, BrOTP and OT3: the fandom variations

TermMeaningExample use
OTPOne true pairing, your favourite couple"They're my OTP forever"
NOTPA pairing you can't stand"Sorry, that ship is my NOTP"
BrOTPA friendship you love, not romantic"Best friends, total BrOTP"
OT3A favourite trio"Honestly, they're an OT3"
OTPingMaking two characters your OTP"I'm OTPing them now"

Dictionary.com adds that people also use OTP jokingly for a character and something they love, like a favourite food. If shorthand like this sounds familiar, IYKYK is another fandom favourite.

Any of these can be used as a verb, so "I'm OTPing them" means you've decided those two are your favourite couple. That flexibility is part of why the term has lasted for so long in fan spaces.

OTP as "one-time password" on your phone

Wiktionary defines a one-time password as a password valid for only one login session or transaction. It's also called a one-time passcode or PIN. Banks, shops and social apps send one by text or email, or generate it in an authenticator app, so that a stolen password alone isn't enough to get in. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre explains that with 2-step verification you're sent a PIN or code, often by SMS or email, and entering it proves it's really you.

The big advantage, Wikipedia explains, is that an OTP can't be reused: if someone records a code you've already used, it won't work again. That's why so many services rely on them for logins and payments. The NCSC recommends turning on 2-step verification for your most important accounts, such as email, banking and social media.

The OTP scam warning: never share the code

Here's the safety point that matters most. A one-time password only protects you if you're the only person who sees it. Wikipedia's background on OTPs notes that attackers can still get them through phishing, then impersonate you. That's why scammers message pretending to be a bank, a delivery firm or even a friend who's "sent a code to your number by mistake". The NCSC warns that criminals use links in emails, texts and DMs to trick people into logging in on fake sites.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  1. Only type an OTP into the app or website you were already logging into yourself.
  2. Never read a code out to a caller or paste it into a chat, whoever they say they are.
  3. If you get a code you didn't ask for, someone may have your password, so change it.
  4. Turn on an authenticator app where you can, and keep your backup codes somewhere safe.

If your Instagram is the worry, here's where to find your Instagram backup codes and how to check your Instagram login activity.

If you've already shared a code by mistake, act quickly. Change the password on that account, sign out of other devices if the app lets you, and check your login activity for anything you don't recognise.

How to tell which OTP you're looking at

These are made-up messages to show how it's used:

  • "Season finale has me crying, my OTP finally kissed": fandom.
  • "Your login code is below, don't share it with anyone": security code.
  • "Send me the OTP you just got": a red flag, ignore it.
  • "Those two are such an OTP": a couple, real or fictional, someone loves.

My advice for brands using OTP in posts

If your audience is into TV, books or games, OTP can be a fun hook, such as asking followers to name their OTP from a show. Keep it clearly fandom though, because some followers will think of security codes first. And if your business sends one-time passwords, write your texts plainly: say what the code is for and that your team will never ask for it. That one line protects your customers better than anything clever.
