Facebook Reels ads are full-screen vertical video ads that appear between organic reels in the Reels tab and the vertical viewer people land in when they tap a reel from Feed. People can like, comment, save, share and skip them, just like a normal reel. Meta recommends a 9:16 video at 1440 x 2560 pixels, with primary text of about 40 characters and a headline of about 55.
The detail most people miss is the safe zone. Meta tells you to keep text, logos and key visuals away from the top, the sides and especially the bottom of a Reels ad, because that's where the profile icon and call to action sit. If you're adding a disclaimer, Meta's safe zone guide says to keep a large part of the bottom of the ad clear. Text placed where a normal social video would put it often ends up hidden.
Where Facebook Reels ads appear
Meta's placement guide lists Facebook Reels under Stories, Status and Reels, with the description that your ads appear in the Reels tab on Facebook. The Ads Guide adds how that feels to a viewer: once someone taps into a reel from Feed or the Reels tab, they're taken into a viewing panel that only shows reels, scrolling vertically, and your ad is inserted between them.
Reels ads vs in-stream ads for reels
These two placements are easy to mix up, and they work differently:
| Facebook Reels ads | Facebook in-stream reels ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How it shows | Your ad is a reel in its own right, shown between organic reels | Your ad plays inside someone else's video or approved live stream |
| Viewer actions | Like, comment, view, save, share and skip | Skippable (up to 5 seconds) or non-skippable (up to 15 seconds) viewing period |
| Placement group in Ads Manager | Stories, Status and Reels | In-stream ads for reels |
| Timing | Appears as you scroll | First ad tends to come after one minute into a video |
Facebook Reels ad specs
| Spec | Meta's recommendation |
|---|---|
| File type | MP4, MOV or GIF |
| Ratio | 9:16 |
| Resolution | 1440 x 2560 pixels |
| Video settings | H.264 compression, square pixels, fixed frame rate, progressive scan, stereo AAC audio above 128 kbps |
| Primary text | 40 characters |
| Headline | 55 characters |
| Captions | Optional, but recommended |
| Sound | Optional, but strongly recommended |
| Maximum duration | No maximum limit |
| Maximum file size | 4 GB |
| Auto captioning support | No |
Meta also says videos shouldn't contain edit lists in the file container, and that special boxes aren't supported. If your editing app exports with either, re-export with standard settings before you upload.
How to use the safe zone
- Keep the edges clear. For 9:16 ads in Stories, Reels, Feed and in-stream reels, Meta says keep the top, bottom and sides free of key creative, text and logos.
- Turn on the guardrail. In Ads Manager, switch on Safe zone guardrail. The safe area appears inside a yellow overlay on your creative.
- Plan for tall screens. On phones taller than 9:16, Meta may zoom your creative to fill the screen, which crops anything outside the safe zone, or show it at 9:16 on a black background.
- Leave room for disclaimers. If your ad carries one, keep the lower part of the frame free of text and logos, as Meta's safe zone guide sets out.
Meta's text overlay tips are simple: a clean, modern font in a large size with a contrasting colour, don't cover the visuals, and stick to one message because an ad usually has one call to action.
Making a Reels ad that doesn't look like an ad
Because Reels ads sit between organic reels and people can skip them, the creative has to earn the next second. Meta's specs call sound strongly recommended, and captions recommended, which tells you how Meta expects these to be watched. The same habits that help organic reels apply here. If your organic reels aren't landing either, my notes on why Facebook reels get no views cover the usual causes.
Choosing Reels in Ads Manager
Reels is included when you use Advantage+ placements, Meta's recommended setting. To see or edit it, open your ad set's placements and look under Stories, Status and Reels. Meta says adding more placements doesn't increase the cost of your ad, and multiple placements can improve results, so most advertisers leave Reels switched on and build one vertical version of each video.
Short vertical creative is the hard part, and this list of AI UGC video generators sets out tools that generate it.

My advice
Make a vertical version of every video ad, even if you're mainly running Feed. It costs you one export and opens up Reels, Stories and in-stream reels in one go. Keep your text in the middle of the frame, add sound and captions, and check the safe zone guardrail before you publish.
