What an AI Marketing Consultant Does (And When You Should Hire One)

The short version: An AI marketing consultant helps businesses choose, implement, and get results from AI tools inside their marketing operations. You should hire one when you're wasting money on tools that aren't working, when your team is too small to experiment safely, or when you need someone who has already made the expensive mistakes so you don't have to.

The job title that confuses everyone, including some people who hold it

I get asked this constantly. Someone sees my profile, reads "AI marketing consultant," and their eyes go slightly blank. They nod politely and then ask if I do social media.

I don't do social media. Not for clients, anyway.

The confusion is understandable. "AI consultant" sounds like someone who builds large language models in a lab. "Marketing consultant" sounds like someone who redesigns your Instagram grid. The combination sounds like something a person invented to justify charging more for both.

It isn't. The role is specific and, done well, useful. Let me break down what it looks like in practice.

What the work is

Auditing what you're already doing

Most businesses I talk to have already bought AI tools. They have a ChatGPT Teams subscription, maybe Jasper or Copy.ai, possibly a Canva Pro account with the AI features switched on. Sometimes they have a Zapier connection to something that was supposed to automate their email sequences six months ago and nobody's touched it since.

The first thing I do is find out what they have, what it's costing them, and whether anyone is using it. This audit phase usually takes two to three hours of conversation and a look at their tech stack. It almost always reveals that they're paying for overlap, missing obvious quick wins, and have one tool that could do the work of three if someone set it up correctly.

That alone often saves the monthly retainer fee in the first week.

Recommending and building the right stack

This is not "here are ten AI tools you should try." That is a listicle, not consulting.

Real recommendation work means understanding the business model, the team size, the existing workflows, the budget, and the actual goal. A B2B SaaS company with a three-person marketing team needs a completely different setup than a solo e-commerce founder or a mid-sized agency trying to scale content production.

I might recommend HubSpot's AI features for one client and tell another client to stop paying for HubSpot entirely and move to a lighter setup with Clay for prospecting and Notion AI for content workflows. The tool doesn't matter. The outcome does.

Implementation and workflow design

This is where a lot of so-called AI consultants quietly disappear. Recommending tools is easy. Building the workflow that runs inside a real business, with real people who have other jobs to do, is harder.

Good implementation work looks like sitting down with the content team and building a prompt library they'll use. It looks like creating a documented process for AI-assisted email campaigns that anyone on the team can follow, not just the one person who watched the YouTube tutorial. It looks like connecting Perplexity or Claude to a research workflow so that a single marketer can produce better-researched content in half the time.

I've built these workflows for clients. The ones that stick are simple, documented, and tested before I hand them over.

Training the humans

AI tools don't fail because the technology is bad. They fail because people don't trust them, don't know how to prompt them, or revert to their old habits after three days because nobody reinforced the new process.

Part of my job is running working sessions with teams so they leave knowing how to use what I've set up. Not a webinar. An actual working session where they do the task and I watch and correct in real time. That's what makes things stick.

Ongoing strategy and iteration

The AI marketing landscape is moving fast enough that what worked eight months ago might be redundant now. An ongoing retainer relationship with a consultant means someone is watching that space for you, testing new tools on your behalf, and telling you when something worth changing has emerged.

I do this for a handful of retained clients. We have a monthly call, a shared Notion document where I log what I'm testing, and a clear agreement about what I'm responsible for. It's not complicated. It just requires doing it.

What it isn't

Not done-for-you content creation. If you want someone to write your blogs using AI, hire a content writer who uses AI tools. That is a service; this is a different thing.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Not software development. If you need custom AI models, fine-tuning, or API integrations that require engineering work, you need a developer alongside a consultant, or instead of one, depending on the brief.

Not a magic fix for a broken marketing strategy. AI amplifies what you already do. If your messaging is wrong, AI will help you produce the wrong messaging faster. Fix the strategy first.

When you should hire one

Your team is small and experimentation is expensive

If you have one or two marketing people and you're trying to figure out how to scale output without hiring, an AI consultant can compress months of trial-and-error into weeks. You're not paying for the consultant's time, you're paying for the mistakes they've already made on someone else's budget.

You have budget going into tools that aren't producing results

The average SMB is spending somewhere between 300 and 800 pounds a month on SaaS tools they're underusing. An audit from someone who knows the space cold can realign that spending in a single session.

You're about to make a significant AI-related decision

Signing a two-year contract with an enterprise AI platform. Rebuilding your content workflow around a new tool. Integrating AI into your CRM. These are decisions that are expensive to reverse. Paying for three to five hours of expert input before committing is straightforward risk management.

Your competitors are pulling ahead and you don't know why

Sometimes the answer isn't that they've hired more people. Sometimes it's that they've built a smarter workflow. If your output is slower, your content is thinner, and your campaigns are taking longer to turn around than they should, AI workflow design might be the gap.

What it costs and what to expect

Rates vary significantly. For a UK-based AI marketing consultant with a real track record, you're looking at roughly 150 to 400 pounds per hour for project work, or 2,000 to 6,000 pounds a month for a retained relationship. US-based consultants with comparable experience often run at 200 to 500 dollars an hour. Anyone pricing significantly below that floor for substantive strategy work is probably selling a template wrapped in a conversation.

A good engagement should have a clear brief, defined deliverables, and a way to measure success before the work starts. If someone can't tell you what done looks like, that is a problem.

You should expect to feel slightly uncomfortable during the audit phase. The good consultants find the things you didn't know were wrong. That's the point.

A final honest note

I rebuilt my own business using the systems I now help clients build. I know what it looks like to be a one-person operation trying to compete with teams ten times larger, and I know that the right AI setup changes that equation. It's not hype. It's also not effortless. It takes someone who knows which tools are real and which are noise, and who can translate that knowledge into something a normal marketing team can use on a Tuesday morning.

That is the job. It's not glamorous. But it works.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI marketing consultant the same as a digital marketing consultant?

No. A digital marketing consultant typically manages channels like SEO, paid ads, email, or social. An AI marketing consultant focuses specifically on integrating AI tools and workflows into your marketing operations to improve speed, output quality, and efficiency. Some people do both; most specialists in one area are not strong in the other.

How many hours of consulting do you typically need to see results?

A single audit and recommendation session of three to four hours can produce immediate savings or quick wins. A full workflow build with team training typically takes ten to twenty hours over four to six weeks. Ongoing retainer relationships make sense once you have a working foundation and want someone tracking the space continuously on your behalf.

Can a small business afford an AI marketing consultant?

Yes, particularly for project-based work rather than a retainer. A four-hour audit at 200 pounds an hour costs 800 pounds and can reallocate an existing tools budget that's already being wasted. The question isn't whether you can afford it but whether the current situation is already costing you more than that in wasted spend and missed output.

What should I prepare before hiring an AI marketing consultant?

Have a list of every tool you currently pay for and its monthly cost, a rough description of your current marketing workflows, your team size and structure, and one or two specific problems you want solved. The more concrete your brief, the more useful the engagement will be from day one.
