If Twitch isn't sending your verification code to your email, check your spam folder, make sure you're looking at the right address, then use Resend code on the login screen and wait a few minutes. Twitch says email codes only go to verified addresses on accounts without two-factor authentication. If 2FA is on, the code comes by text message or your authenticator app.
You type your username, you hit log in, and then you sit staring at an empty inbox. It's one of the most irritating little blockers on Twitch, and it hits viewers, streamers and anyone running a channel for a brand or a community. If you need to get into your channel before a scheduled stream, every minute feels long.
I've gone through Twitch's own help centre on this, and the good news is that the fixes are fairly short and logical. The first job is working out which kind of code you're waiting for, because Twitch sends them in different ways depending on how your account is set up.
Which Twitch verification code are you waiting for?
Twitch's help pages split this problem into separate situations, and the right fix depends on yours:
- Logging in from a new device or place: Twitch says it may send a six-character login code by email.
- Setting up two-factor authentication: you get a text message code to your phone first.
- Logging in with 2FA already on: you use your authenticator app or a text message code, never an email code.
- Recovering an account: a recovery code can go to your email or phone, but only accounts without 2FA get recovery codes by email.
- Verifying a brand new account: the code goes to the email address you signed up with.
Spend a minute on this, because chasing an email that was never going to be sent is the most common way people lose half an hour.
Fixing a Twitch login code that never arrives by email
Twitch says that when you log in from a device it doesn't recognise, it sends a six-character code to your email, provided your email address is verified and you don't have two-factor authentication switched on. Work through these in order:
- Check the spam or junk folder, and search your mailbox for the word Twitch.
- Look at the address on the account. Make sure you're checking the right mailbox, because it's easy to have several.
- Wait about 5 minutes, since Twitch says email delivery can be delayed.
- On the login screen, choose Resend code to ask for a new one.
- If the email address was disabled on the account, Twitch says you won't receive codes until you re-enable it.
If the code does turn up but Twitch rejects it, the help centre suggests waiting 2-3 minutes in case it expired, asking for a new one with Resend code, and checking you haven't pasted in a stray space before or after the characters. Twitch also says to try another browser, clear your browser's cache and cookies, or try a private window to rule out extensions.
When the Twitch code email still won't show up
Twitch's guidance goes further if you've done the basics and still see nothing. Each of these is about your mailbox rather than Twitch itself:
- Add Twitch's sending addresses to your contacts or safe senders list.
- Look at your email provider's blocked senders list. Twitch notes that Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo can filter aggressively.
- Check your storage. A full mailbox blocks new messages.
- Look for forwarding rules that might be sending Twitch emails somewhere else.
- Wait 10-15 minutes, because delivery can slow down at busy times.
Twitch also says that if other Twitch emails arrive but the verification codes don't, that points to a delivery problem specific to those automated messages, and that's the point to contact Twitch Support. If the same code keeps arriving, wait 10-15 minutes before asking for another, as the system may be rate-limiting you.
What to do if Twitch sends texts instead of emails
If you have two-factor authentication turned on, Twitch says you can only log in with the code from your authenticator app or a text message. Email codes aren't part of that flow. That catches out a lot of streamers who set up 2FA months ago and forgot.
- Open your authenticator app and find your Twitch entry. Twitch says these apps make codes without internet or mobile signal.
- If you'd rather use text, make sure your phone has signal and wait a few minutes before choosing the resend option.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb, and check you haven't blocked messages from unknown senders or short codes.
- Restart your phone and try again.
Twitch says text messages can take up to 5 minutes, and that carriers sometimes filter automated messages. It also says to wait at least 60 seconds between requests, because too many requests can trigger rate limiting. If you do get rate limited, Twitch says you'll need to wait 24 hours.
Phone number rules for Twitch verification codes
A surprising number of Twitch code problems come down to the phone number itself. According to Twitch's help centre:
- Enter the number with its country code.
- It has to be a mobile number that can receive text messages. Landlines and VoIP numbers, such as Google Voice, aren't supported.
- SMS may not reach every country reliably.
- Twitch says Russia is currently the only region blocked from text codes for 2FA, so Russian users need an authenticator app.
If your number has changed, Twitch points you to its account access guide, and for 2FA users who've lost their old number it points to Authy's phone change form. Twitch explains that turning on 2FA creates an Authy account linked to your number automatically, whatever authenticator app you use. Authy says it processes requests within 24-48 business hours.

Getting back into a Twitch account you've lost access to
If you can't reach your email or your phone, you're in recovery territory, and that's a different process from resending a code. Twitch says to make sure you're entering the correct username, and it has an account recovery tool to help you find it. For anyone who has lost both email and phone, the account access guide has a dedicated section.
If you run a channel for a business, I'd treat this as a prompt to tidy up. Use an email address that more than one trusted person can reach, rather than a personal inbox that only one person checks. And if you're ever sent a code you didn't ask for, Twitch says someone may be trying to get into your account, so secure it straight away. If you ever decide to close a channel for good, my guide to deleting or disabling your Twitch account walks through the options.
Making Twitch verification more reliable next time
- Switch to an authenticator app. Twitch strongly recommends this because it isn't affected by carrier delays or spam filters.
- Back up your authenticator. Twitch lists Authy, Duo Mobile and Microsoft Authenticator as apps with opt-in backups.
- Keep your backup codes safe if you saved them when setting up.
- Keep your email address and phone number up to date in your Twitch settings.
When you sort this out, you may also want to review who can act on your channel. My guides to adding a mod on Twitch and blocking someone on Twitch are a good next stop once you're back in.
When to contact Twitch about a missing verification code
Twitch says to contact Support once you've worked through the steps for your situation. When you write, give your username, which scenario applies, what you've already tried and, for a rejected code, a screenshot of the error and the browser or device you used. Please don't share your password or any codes with anyone.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't Twitch sending my verification code to my email?
Common reasons are the email landing in spam, a delay of a few minutes, checking the wrong mailbox, a disabled email address, or having two-factor authentication on, which uses text or app codes instead.
How long does a Twitch verification code take to arrive?
Twitch says email delivery can be delayed and that text messages can take up to 5 minutes. If nothing arrives after 10-15 minutes, work through the mailbox checks.
Can I get a Twitch code by email with 2FA on?
Twitch says if 2FA is on you can only log in with the code from your authenticator app or a text message. Only accounts without 2FA get recovery codes by email.
Does Twitch send codes to Google Voice or landline numbers?
No. Twitch says you need a mobile number that can receive texts, and that landlines and VoIP numbers aren't supported.
What if Twitch says I've asked for too many codes?
Wait. Twitch says to leave at least 60 seconds between requests, and that if you're rate limited you'll need to wait 24 hours.
Who do I contact if I still can't get a Twitch code?
Contact Twitch Support, and include your username, which situation applies and what you've already tried.
