Twitch Not Loading? Fixes for Black Screens and Error Codes

If Twitch isn't loading, refresh the page or restart the app, try another live stream, and check whether other websites load. Twitch's help then suggests a different network, an updated browser, no extensions (ad blockers especially) and a cleared cache and cookies. If only one stream fails, the streamer's setup may be the cause.

"Not loading" can mean a few different things on Twitch: a blank page, a black video box, a spinning wheel that never stops, or an error code in the middle of the player. The fix depends on which one you're looking at.

Twitch's help centre has a playback troubleshooting guide and a supported-browsers guide, and between them they cover almost everything. I've put the steps in the order Twitch gives them, quick checks first, with the error codes after. If you watch Twitch for research, competitor ideas or to support a client who streams, it's worth keeping this to hand.

How Twitch not loading shows up

Twitch lists the sorts of playback trouble it covers: audio and video that stutter, video that stutters while the audio is fine, a video that is completely black or doesn't load, audio and video out of sync, and fullscreen that won't work. It also points out that streams vary with each broadcaster's setup, so some causes are in your hands (internet speed, device settings) and some are not.

The quick checks to run when Twitch won't load

  1. Refresh the page in your browser, or restart the app or player.
  2. Try another live stream as a test.
  3. Check whether other websites load. If twitch.tv isn't the only site failing, Twitch says you may have an internet connection problem.
  4. Try watching on another network, such as a cellular network instead of your Wi-Fi.

Step two matters more than it looks. If another channel plays smoothly, Twitch says the issue may be that specific streamer's broadcast settings, such as a very high bitrate, an encoder misconfiguration or an unstable upload connection on their side. That's not something you can fix, and waiting then trying again often does the job.

Updating or switching your browser for Twitch

On a computer, Twitch officially supports the two latest versions of Chrome and Firefox, and the most recent versions of Edge, Safari, Opera and Opera GX. Other browsers might work, but Twitch says it can't guarantee every feature will. If you're on an unsupported browser, Twitch suggests trying one of the supported ones.

For problems on a supported browser, Twitch lists these steps in this order:

  1. Make sure your browser is up to date.
  2. Disable your extensions, especially developer-type extensions.
  3. Clear your cache and cookies. Twitch says to do this after disabling the extensions.
  4. Restart your browser and try again.
  5. Log out of any VPN or software that reroutes your requests through a different IP address than your own.
  6. Try a different network, for instance switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data.
  7. Try a different device to see whether the problem belongs to one device.

Turning off ad blockers when Twitch video won't play

Extensions come up again and again in Twitch's guide. For error codes 1000, 2000, 3000 and 7005 it names browser extensions as a possible cause, and it specifically says to disable ad-blocking extensions. You can also open Twitch in an incognito window with all extensions off, which is a quick way to test the idea without changing your setup. The same extension and cache logic applies elsewhere, and my page on Twitter images not loading in Chrome walks through a similar check.

Checking your internet speed for Twitch

When you watch, your download speed decides your video quality. Twitch notes that a high upload speed won't help if the download speed is low. Its recommended download speeds are:

QualityRecommended download speed
1440p609-18 Mbps or higher
1080p607-12 Mbps or higher
720p603-6 Mbps or higher
480p1.1-3 Mbps or higher
360p0.7-1.5 Mbps or higher

Twitch also suggests setting the video quality to Auto. Click the settings icon on the player, choose quality and make sure Auto is selected. Auto adjusts to your network as it changes, and Twitch warns that forcing 1080p60 can make things worse if your network can't hold it steady. If another video site is slow too, my guide to why YouTube is lagging is a useful comparison.

Mobile data limits can stop Twitch loading on a phone

If Twitch buffers on a phone, Twitch suggests checking your carrier's plan for video streaming limits. It says some carriers cap streaming speeds or quality, for example at a level that supports 480p. Higher qualities may need extra options from the carrier, so contact your carrier to find out what's available.

Twitch error codes and what they mean

If the player shows a number, Twitch's guide gives specific fixes.

Twitch error 1000

This means the browser or app can't play the video because of compatibility trouble. Causes: an outdated browser, extensions, or a stream that uses features your browser or region doesn't support. Fixes: update the browser, disable ad-blocking extensions or try an incognito window, and check whether the stream is available in your region.

Twitch error 2000

This points to a network problem. Twitch says the connection isn't strong, stable or set up well enough to deliver video. Check speed and stability, restart your modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds, set quality to Auto and disable extensions.

Twitch error 3000

This is a decode error, meaning your device is struggling to decode and show the stream. Update your browser, switch hardware acceleration off, update your graphics drivers, restart the browser and disable extensions. In Chrome, hardware acceleration is under Settings, System. In Firefox it sits under Settings, General, Performance.

Twitch error 7005

This is a DRM error, where your browser's settings stop protected content playing. Make sure DRM is switched on: in Chrome, allow sites to play protected content; in Firefox, enable Play DRM-controlled content; in Edge, allow sites to play protected content. You can also try another device.

Why Twitch loads for a friend but not for you

Twitch's help says every person's device and network settings differ. Even in the same house on the same network, something on your device might cause trouble that your friend's doesn't have. Its advice is to compare what's different, such as the browser, extensions and hardware acceleration.

Reporting a Twitch loading problem to Twitch

If you've tried everything, Twitch says to contact Twitch Support, and to include your browser name and version, your operating system, the steps to reproduce the problem, screenshots and browser console error logs. Twitch's help also invites you to report video playback issues.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't Twitch load on my computer?

Twitch's help suggests refreshing, trying another stream, updating your browser, disabling extensions (ad blockers especially), clearing cache and cookies, and logging out of any VPN.

What does Twitch error 2000 mean?

It means a network problem. Twitch says to check your connection speed, restart your modem and router, set quality to Auto and disable extensions.

What does Twitch error 3000 mean?

It's a decode error. Twitch says to update your browser and graphics drivers, switch hardware acceleration off and disable extensions.

Why does one Twitch stream load and others don't?

Twitch says the problem can be that streamer's broadcast settings, such as very high bitrate or an unstable upload connection. Try other channels to check.

Should I leave Twitch quality on Auto?

Twitch recommends it. Auto adjusts to your network in real time, while forcing 1080p60 can cause buffering if your connection can't keep up.
