How to Turn On Dark Mode for Instagram DMs

The short version: Instagram DMs don't have their own dark mode switch, they simply follow your phone's system-wide display setting, so you turn on dark mode in your phone's settings, not inside the Instagram app. On iPhone that's Settings, Display and Brightness. On Android it's Settings, Display. Once your phone is set to dark, Instagram and its DMs switch automatically within a few seconds.

Why there's no dark mode button inside Instagram DMs

I'll save you ten minutes of tapping round the Instagram app looking for a toggle that doesn't exist. There is no separate "dark mode for DMs" setting. There never has been. Instagram ties its entire appearance, including the messages inbox, to whatever display mode your phone is already running. If your phone is in light mode, Instagram DMs are white and bright. If your phone is in dark mode, Instagram DMs turn black with light grey text. That's it. The app just inherits the setting.

This surprises a lot of people because apps like WhatsApp and Twitter (X) give you an in-app toggle that's separate from your phone settings. Instagram doesn't. It made this decision years ago and hasn't changed it, which is a bit annoying if you want Instagram dark but everything else light, but it's consistent and quick once you know where to look.

On iPhone

  • Open Settings
  • Tap Display and Brightness
  • Select Dark under the Appearance options
  • Close Settings and open Instagram, it will already be dark

If you want it to switch automatically at sunset, tap Automatic instead of Dark, then set Options to "Sunset to Sunrise" or a custom schedule.

On Android

  • Open Settings
  • Tap Display
  • Select Dark theme (on some Samsung phones it's under Display, then "Dark mode")
  • Open Instagram to confirm the DMs have switched

Most Android phones also let you schedule dark mode, usually under Display, then "Dark theme" settings, then "Turn on as scheduled."

A worked example

Say you run a small online stationery shop and you're answering customer DMs on Instagram late at night after the kids are in bed, scrolling through order questions in a pitch-dark room with the phone brightness turned right up. White DM screens at 11pm are harsh on the eyes, and that's the exact situation dark mode was built for. You'd go into your phone's Display settings, switch to Dark, and within seconds every white DM thread turns to that soft black-and-grey Instagram uses. No app update needed, no hidden menu, just the one settings change that fixes every app on your phone at once, not just Instagram.

What changes once dark mode is on

The background goes from white to near-black. Your sent messages stay in their blue bubble, received messages switch from light grey to dark grey. Text stays legible, nothing gets hidden or hard to read. Story rings, profile photos and video thumbnails in DMs keep their normal colour, Instagram only changes the background and bubble shading, not your actual content.

Worth knowing: dark mode doesn't reduce your data use or battery drain in any meaningful way on standard LCD screens, it mostly only saves battery on OLED and AMOLED screens, because those screens can switch individual pixels off for true black. If you've got an older LCD iPhone or budget Android phone, dark mode is purely a visual comfort choice, not a battery hack, whatever your mate told you.

The bit most "how to" guides skip

Here's the uncomfortable truth nobody selling you a quick fix wants to say: you cannot have Instagram DMs in dark mode while keeping the rest of your phone in light mode, not without jailbreaking or using a third-party modified app, which Instagram explicitly bans and can get your account flagged or disabled. Some people go looking for "Instagram dark mode without changing phone settings" hoping there's a secret in-app toggle buried somewhere. There isn't. Instagram made an all-or-nothing decision, and no amount of tapping around the app's settings menu, your profile, or the accessibility section will find you a workaround. If you want Instagram dark, your whole phone goes dark. That's the only path, and it's worth knowing before you waste twenty minutes hunting for a setting that was never built.

Troubleshooting when it doesn't switch

If you've changed your phone's display setting and Instagram DMs are still showing white, try these in order:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Fully close the Instagram app and reopen it, rather than just switching away and back
  • Check you're on the latest version of Instagram from the App Store or Google Play, as very old versions sometimes ignore system dark mode
  • Restart your phone if the app still won't update its appearance
  • Check "Automatic" isn't set to a schedule that currently puts you in light hours

If none of that works, it's usually an app update issue rather than anything wrong with your settings.

Why this tiny setting matters more than people think

I talk to small business owners constantly who are running their entire customer service operation through Instagram DMs, answering booking questions, sorting refunds, chasing up leads, often from a phone rather than a desk. If you're in that inbox for an hour a day, the difference between white glare and a dark, low-strain screen adds up. It's a two-minute settings change with a real comfort payoff, which is rarer than it sounds in the "optimise your Instagram" advice space. While you're in your phone's display settings, it's also worth checking how dark mode affects other parts of your content workflow, because the same display setting that changes your DMs also changes how you preview Reels that look too bright when you're editing on your phone late at night.

And if you're already deep in Instagram's settings menus sorting out your display, it's a good moment to also check your night mode setting for Stories, since the two often get confused but sit in slightly different places depending on your phone.

If you manage Instagram for a business

None of this is complicated enough to need outside help on its own, but if you're finding that even small Instagram settings like this are eating into time you should be spending on strategy, content, or growing the account, that's usually a sign the bigger workflow needs looking at, not the dark mode toggle. That's the kind of thing I help small businesses fix when I work as an AI consultant for small business, sorting out which parts of social media management can be automated or simplified so you're not burning an evening on app settings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn on dark mode for just Instagram DMs and not the rest of the app?

No. Instagram applies dark mode to the whole app at once, including your feed, Reels, Stories and DMs. There's no setting inside Instagram to change the inbox colour on its own.

Does Instagram have its own dark mode setting inside the app?

No, Instagram removed any standalone in-app dark mode toggle it once tested and now relies entirely on your phone's system display setting. Change your phone to dark mode and Instagram, including DMs, follows automatically.

Why are my Instagram DMs still white after I turned on dark mode?

Usually it's because the app needs a full close and reopen rather than a quick swipe-away, or your Instagram app is out of date. Update the app, fully restart it, and check your phone's Automatic dark mode schedule isn't currently set to light hours.

Does dark mode save battery on Instagram?

Only on phones with OLED or AMOLED screens, which can turn individual pixels off for true black. On standard LCD screens, dark mode is purely visual and won't meaningfully change your battery life.
