TikTok screen time tools live in Settings and privacy, then Time and well-being, then Screen time. You can set a daily limit, add sleep reminders that mute notifications at night, get weekly usage updates, and check a dashboard of your time for the past few weeks. Changes apply on both the app and the web.
TikTok is designed to keep you scrolling, so it's useful that it also gives you tools to stop. Its screen time settings let you cap your daily use, wind down at night and see exactly how long you've spent in the app. They take two minutes to set up, and they work on the website too, not just your phone.
Where to find TikTok's screen time settings
- Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Menu button, then Settings and privacy.
- Tap Time and well-being.
- Tap Screen time.
Everything below lives on that screen. On the web, click your profile picture, then Settings, then Screen time.
The four screen time tools
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Daily screen time | Notifies you when you reach a daily limit you choose |
| Sleep hours | Reminds you to take a break at night and mutes push notifications |
| Weekly screen time updates | Tells you last week's total and compares it with the week before |
| Screen time dashboard | Shows time spent each day for the current week, plus the previous 3 weeks |
How to set a daily limit
- Go to Time and well-being, then Screen time.
- Turn on Daily screen time.
- Choose a limit from the options, or set a custom one.
When you hit the limit, TikTok notifies you and you choose whether to close the app or enter the on-screen passcode to carry on. It's a nudge rather than a lock, so it works best if you decide in advance to respect it.
For teens aged 13 to 17, TikTok turns this on by default with a one-hour limit. Parents can manage it more firmly through Family Pairing.
How sleep reminders work
Turn on Sleep hours under Screen time and schedule your sleep time. When it starts, TikTok mutes push notifications to cut distractions and reminds you in the app to consider taking a break. TikTok works out when your sleep time should end based on your age and expert guidance on minimum sleep: at least 8 hours for 13 to 17 year olds and at least 7 hours for adults.
Weekly updates and the dashboard
Weekly screen time updates send you a summary of how much time you spent on TikTok last week and how that compares with the week before. If you'd rather not get a push notification, you can switch push off under Notifications and still get the update in your inbox.
The dashboard is the honest mirror. It's in your activity center, and it shows your total time spent each day for the current week, across the app and the web. You can use the date filter to look at the previous 3 weeks, but no further back.
Making the limits stick
- Pick a realistic number. A limit you'll ignore every day teaches you to ignore it.
- Turn off non-essential notifications. Fewer pings means fewer reasons to open the app.
- Use sleep hours every night. Late-night scrolling is where time disappears fastest.
- Check the dashboard weekly. Seeing the numbers is often enough to change habits.
- Move the app. Taking TikTok off your home screen adds a small pause before you open it.
Screen time for creators and business accounts
If TikTok is part of your work, it's easy to lose hours watching instead of creating. Set a daily limit for browsing, and do your posting and replying in focused blocks. Tools like scheduling and drafts help you get work done without endless scrolling. If you're planning content, our guide to finding your TikTok story archive helps you reuse what you've already made, and for a lighter app, see what TikTok Lite is.
Screen time and Family Pairing
Daily screen time and the dashboard are also available in Family Pairing. That lets a parent set and view a teen's limits from their own phone, rather than relying on the teen's own settings. If you're a parent, that's the stronger option.

Which settings to start with
| If you want to | Turn on |
|---|---|
| Stop losing whole evenings | Daily screen time with a realistic limit |
| Stop scrolling in bed | Sleep hours |
| Just understand your habits | Weekly screen time updates and the dashboard |
| Manage a teen's use | Family Pairing, where screen time settings are also available |
You don't need every tool at once. Start with the one that matches your biggest problem, check the dashboard after a week, and add another if you need it. Small changes you'll keep beat strict rules you'll abandon by Friday.
One more habit helps: decide what you'll do instead when the limit hits. Put the kettle on, message a friend or pick up a book. Having a ready alternative makes it much easier to close the app instead of tapping in the passcode.
My verdict
TikTok's screen time tools are worth five minutes of setup: a daily limit, sleep hours at night, weekly updates and a dashboard that shows where your time goes. Find them under Settings and privacy, Time and well-being, Screen time, and remember the daily limit is a nudge you have to choose to respect.
