Threads Web: How to Use Threads on Your Computer (threads.com)

Threads web is the browser version of Threads at threads.com, and you sign in with the Instagram or Facebook account your Threads profile is connected to. On a computer you click Add in the bottom right to post, and More on the left, then Settings, to change your privacy, notifications and connected apps.

Meta's Threads help pages now give separate steps for "Threads.com from a computer", so almost everything you do in the app works at your desk too. The layout is different, though, and a few buttons sit somewhere you wouldn't guess. Here's where everything is.

Where the main Threads controls are on a computer

What you want to doWhere to find it on threads.com
Start a new threadClick Add in the bottom right
Tag a topicWhile writing, click Tag or type #
Choose who can replyClick Anyone can reply in the bottom left before you post
Edit a postProfile on the left, open the post, Options in the top right, Edit
Make your profile privateMore on the left, Settings, Privacy, Private profile

How to post a thread from your computer

  1. Go to threads.com and sign in.
  2. Click Add in the bottom right to start a new thread.
  3. Write your post. Meta says a thread can include short pieces of text, links, photos, videos or any combination of them.
  4. To add a topic, click Tag or type # and enter it. You can include up to 1 topic per post, and it appears in blue once posted.
  5. To limit replies, click Anyone can reply in the bottom left and choose Profiles you follow or Mentioned only.
  6. Click Post in the bottom right.

One thing to know if you limit replies: Meta says that thread won't be shared with your fediverse followers. For what to write and how the topic and reply rules work in any version, see my guide to posting on Threads.

How to edit a post on Threads web

  1. Click Profile on the left.
  2. Click Threads at the top, or Replies to find your replies.
  3. Open the post, click Options in the top right and choose Edit.
  4. Change the text and click Post.

Here's the catch. You can only edit a post within 15 minutes of posting, and only the text: Meta says you can't add or remove attachments. If anyone likes, replies to, reposts or quotes it before you finish, the post shows Edited. So on a computer, where it's tempting to post quickly between other tabs, read it through before you click Post.

Settings and privacy on threads.com

Everything lives under More on the left, then Settings. To go private, click Privacy, then Private profile, flip the toggle and click OK. If you'd turned on sharing to the fediverse, Meta says going private switches that sharing off. My guide to making Threads private covers what changes for your followers.

Not every setting is managed on Threads itself. Meta's settings table says your password, two-factor authentication and saved login are shared with the Instagram or Facebook account you signed up with, and so is your birthday. Push notifications, muted profiles, Hidden Words, daily time limit and sleep mode are Threads-only.

Check which apps can see your Threads data

Under Settings, click More settings, then Website permissions, then Active. Click Remove next to anything you don't use. Meta notes that an app you return to after 90 days of inactivity may become active again and regain the non-public information you shared with it before.

Hiding replies and muting the noise

To hide a reply on your own post, click Options next to it and choose Hide for everyone. You can also set Hidden Words to hide common offensive words automatically or build your own filter of words, hashtags, numbers and emojis. Meta says Hidden Words doesn't currently apply to messages you receive on Threads.

Taking a break from Threads on the web

If your profile is in Meta Account, you can deactivate it from a computer: More, Settings, Meta Account, Manage profile, then Manage next to the Threads profile and Deactivation or deletion. You can only deactivate once a week, and Meta says it won't delete your Threads data or touch your Instagram profile. If you want to leave for good rather than pause, read how to delete a Threads account first.

My verdict

If you write anything longer than a line, threads.com on a computer is the nicer place to do it: a full keyboard, the topic tag and reply limits in plain sight, and settings one click away under More. Just remember you've got 15 minutes to edit, and only the words, so check a post before you hit Post.
