To find people on Telegram, open Contacts to see people in your phone book who use Telegram, or type their username into the search field. The thing people miss: username search only works if the person has set a public username, so ask them for the exact spelling.
You've just installed Telegram, or a client has asked you to message them there, and now you're staring at an empty chat list. Unlike some apps, Telegram doesn't fill your feed with suggestions. You find people in a few specific ways, and each one depends on what you already know about them: their phone number, their username, or a group you share.
I'll go through each method Telegram's FAQ describes, then flip it round and show how other people find you, so you can decide how reachable you want to be. Everything here uses Telegram's own features. It's about connecting with people who want to be contacted, never about tracking anyone down.
Finding people on Telegram through your phone contacts
Telegram's FAQ says you can write to people who are in your phone contacts and have Telegram. Your contacts who use Telegram appear at the top of your Contacts list.
- Open Telegram and go to Contacts.
- Allow Telegram to use your phone's contacts if it asks.
- Look at the top of the list for people who already use Telegram.
- Tap a name to open a chat.
If someone you expected isn't there, they may not use Telegram, or they may have signed up with a different number from the one you've saved.
Searching for someone by Telegram username
This is the way to reach people when you don't have their number. Telegram's FAQ says you can type a person's Telegram username into the search field, and you don't need their phone number to do it.
- Ask the person for their exact Telegram username.
- Tap the search field at the top of your chat list.
- Type the username.
- Pick the right account from the results and open the chat.
Usernames only work if the person has set one. Telegram calls them public usernames, and once someone sets one, others can find them by it using Global Search.
Finding people you share a Telegram group with
Telegram's FAQ also says people who don't know your phone number can find you when you're both members of the same group. That works both ways. If you've joined a community group, you can usually tap someone's name in the group to open their profile and message them, depending on their privacy settings and the group's rules.
Be polite about it. A friendly message that mentions the group you share is far more welcome than a cold sales pitch.
Staying safe when you find people on Telegram
Search results can include accounts with very similar names, and some of them pretend to be someone else. Before you share anything personal, check you've found the right person. The easiest way is to confirm the username with them through a channel you already trust, such as a phone call or an email you know is theirs.
Be wary of anyone who messages you first claiming to be a well-known brand, a support team or a friend with a new account, especially if they ask for login codes. If something feels off, don't reply, and report the account to Telegram.
How other people find you on Telegram
| Method | What they need | Can you control it? |
|---|---|---|
| Phone contacts | Your number saved in their phone | Partly, through phone number privacy |
| Username search | Your public username | Yes, set or remove your username |
| Shared group | Membership of the same group | Yes, choose which groups you join |
Choosing who can see your phone number on Telegram
By default, Telegram's FAQ says your number is only visible to people you've added to your own address book as contacts. You can change who sees it under Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Phone Number.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
One thing Telegram is clear about: people will always see your number if they already know it and have saved it in their address book. Privacy settings can't hide a number from someone who already has it.
Using a Telegram username for your business
If you run a business, a public username is the tidy way to let customers reach you without handing out your personal mobile number. Pick something short and close to your brand name, then add it to your website, email signature and social bios.
Telegram groups can have up to 200,000 members each, so a group is a good way to gather customers in one place once they've found you. My guide to using Telegram to market your business explains how to set that up.
Finding people on other messaging apps
The rules are different on every platform. If your contacts are spread across apps, here's how to find someone on WhatsApp and how to find someone on Messenger.
If you can't find someone on Telegram
- Check the spelling of their username. A single wrong letter brings up a different account or none at all.
- Confirm they've set a public username. Without one, username search won't find them.
- Check you've saved their number exactly as they use it, including the country code.
- Ask them to message you first. It's the simplest fix.
- If someone is harassing or threatening you, report it to Telegram and, if you're in danger, contact the police.
