For a homelab or personal network, both are free: Tailscale Personal covers up to 6 users with unlimited user devices, and ZeroTier Personal covers 10 devices on one network. For a business, neither free plan applies, because both vendors say their free tier is for non-commercial use. Then the choice is Tailscale's WireGuard mesh with a 14-day Enterprise trial, or ZeroTier's software-defined network starting at its Essential plan with a commercial licence.
Homelab fans, remote teams and IoT builders often end up choosing between these two. I read Tailscale's plans, how-it-works and docs pages and ZeroTier's home, plans and documentation pages to compare them on the points that decide a setup.
Tailscale and ZeroTier at a glance

| First business plan | Standard, unlimited users | Essential, commercial licence |
| Business trial | 14 days of the full Enterprise plan | Start free, then Essential |
| Built on | WireGuard tunnels | Its own peer-authenticating network |
| Stand-out extra | Open source node software | Post-quantum ZeroTier Quantum |
Neither free plan is meant for your company
This is the detail to check first. Tailscale's plans page FAQ says its Personal plan is only suitable for non-commercial use, such as a homelab, a home VPN or gaming, and that a network created with a public email domain like Gmail, Apple or a personal GitHub account is treated as personal use. ZeroTier's plans page describes its Personal plan as a personal licence for hobbyists, smart home enthusiasts and gamers, limited to personal, non-commercial use. So a business should compare the paid entry points: Tailscale Standard, which adds unlimited users and SCIM, and ZeroTier Essential, which includes 10 devices, 10 networks and five admins.
How Tailscale connects devices
Tailscale explains that it uses WireGuard, through the userspace wireguard-go package, to build lightweight encrypted tunnels. Rather than routing everyone through a central gateway, it connects nodes directly to each other in a mesh, which keeps latency low. Its node software is open source. For businesses, Tailscale offers 14 days of its full Enterprise experience with no limits on users or devices, and if you don't pick a plan afterwards, your existing network keeps working but some changes are restricted.
How ZeroTier connects devices
ZeroTier calls itself software-defined networking. Its home page says every endpoint authenticates its peers and enforces policy locally, so there's no central box to fail or attack. For regulated organisations, ZeroTier Quantum implements the CNSA 2.0 algorithm suite, including ML-KEM-1024 and ML-DSA-87, and can be deployed in air-gapped environments. Essential adds ticketed support with an SLA, API and AI agent access and OIDC single sign-on, Scale adds 100 included devices, unlimited networks and custom flow rules, and Enterprise covers 500+ devices or self-hosted setups.
Match the tool to the job
- A homelab, home VPN or gaming network: either free plan works.
- A small company network: trial Tailscale's paid tiers or ZeroTier Essential.
- Post-quantum or air-gapped requirements: ZeroTier Quantum.
- A self-hosted control setup at scale: ZeroTier Enterprise.
- CI/CD runners and short-lived workloads: Tailscale's ephemeral resources.

My advice on Tailscale or ZeroTier
At home, try Tailscale first: up to 6 users and unlimited devices on the free plan is a lot of room, and the WireGuard mesh is quick to set up. At work, don't build on either free plan, since both are for non-commercial use. Run Tailscale's 14-day Enterprise trial and a ZeroTier Essential setup side by side on the same few machines, and choose ZeroTier if you need its post-quantum or self-hosted options. Write down who owns the admin account before you invite the team, and keep that login out of any one person's personal email.
