To delete a Cash App account, open the app, tap your profile in the top right, scroll to Support and choose Close Your Cash App Account. If you no longer have the app, Cash App lists a support phone number and chat. Move your balance out first, and never give anyone your sign-in code or PIN while you do it.
Closing Cash App is quick, but it's worth doing in the right order. The deletion is permanent, it covers your personal information as well as the account, and the moment people search for help with it's exactly when fake support accounts pounce.
Delete Cash App from inside the app
- Open Cash App and tap your account profile in the top right corner.
- Scroll down and choose Support.
- Find Close Your Cash App Account.
- Tap Close Your Cash App Account again to confirm.
Cash App describes this as permanently deleting your account and personal information, so treat it as final.
Delete Cash App if you've removed the app
If the app's already gone from your phone, Cash App gives two routes. You can phone support on (800) 969-1940, or use chat. The chat route sends you back to the app anyway: you start a chat on the website, scan a QR code with your phone, download the app, then go to Profile, Support and Chat. In practice, reinstalling and using the in-app steps above is usually quicker.
Before you close: a checklist
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Withdraw your balance | The Cash App Card is tied to your Cash App balance, not your bank. Move the money to your bank or debit card first |
| Cancel anything paid with the Cash App Card | Subscriptions charged to the card will fail once the account's gone |
| Update direct deposit | If your pay lands in Cash App, give your employer new bank details before you close |
| Download what you need | Keep a record of payments if you use them for taxes or disputes |
| Settle open payments | Pending payments or refunds are easier to sort out while the account still exists |
Withdrawing is the one that matters most. Cash App says withdrawing moves money from your Cash App balance to your debit card or bank account, and the Cash App Card isn't connected to your personal bank. Don't leave money sitting in an account you're about to close.
The catch: fake Cash App support
People trying to close an account are a favourite target. You search for a support number, find one on a random site or social media, and the person on the other end asks for your sign-in code to help you close it. That code gives them your account.
Cash App says its support will never ask for your sign-in code, PIN, Social Security Number or ITIN by email, and will never ask you to send a payment, make a purchase, install a remote access app or do a test transaction. Real Cash App emails come from @cash.app, @square.com or @squareup.com. Use the phone number Cash App publishes in its own help article, or the in-app Support menu, and nothing else.
Not ready to delete? Lock it down instead
If the real reason you want out is a worry about security, you've got gentler options. In the Card tab you can switch off your card with the Enable Card toggle, and you can review your trusted devices and remove any you don't use or recognise. Turning on payment notifications means you'll see every payment as it happens. If you've had a suspicious login attempt, secure the email address on your account too.
What happens to your Cashtag and history
Cash App frames closure as removing your account and personal information. That means you lose access to your payment history in the app, so save anything you need first. If you think you might come back to Cash App later, it's simpler to withdraw your balance, switch off the card and leave the account dormant than to delete it and start again.
If someone else has access to your account
Some people want to delete Cash App because they think someone else is in it. Deleting doesn't undo what's already happened, so secure it first. Change the email password linked to your account, remove devices you don't recognise from your trusted devices list, and switch off your card. Then report the suspicious activity through Support in the app before you close the account, so there's a record while the account still exists.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you've already sent money to a scammer, closing the account won't get it back either. Report it in the app first and keep the payment details.
My verdict
Deleting Cash App takes a minute in the app. The time goes on what comes before: withdraw the balance, move direct deposits and cancel card subscriptions. And only ever use the support routes inside the app or on cash.app. If you're moving to a different money app, my checks on Dave, Revolut and cash advance apps that are legit are a good place to start.
