Nintendo Switch 2 suits families and anyone who wants Nintendo's own games, with sharing and group chat built in. Steam Deck suits PC gamers who want their Steam library in their hands, with a full desktop mode when they need it. If Zelda, Splatoon and Animal Crossing are why you play, get the Switch 2; if your games already live on Steam, get the Deck.
These two handhelds look alike in a bag, but they come from opposite worlds: one runs Nintendo's games and online service, the other is a pocket PC running Valve's SteamOS. I read Nintendo's Switch 2 page and FAQ, Valve's Steam Deck site and tech specs, and both companies' App Store listings.

Game-key cards: the Switch 2 detail to know
Nintendo's FAQ explains something lots of people miss. Some Switch 2 games come on a game-key card, which holds no game data at all, only the key to start the game. The first time you play, the whole game downloads over the internet, so you'll need a connection and enough free space on the console or a microSD Express card. You still have to insert the card every time you play.
It's also worth knowing which cards work where. A Switch 2 exclusive won't run on an original Switch, while a Switch 2 Edition card plays the original Switch version, without the extras, on the older console.
Sharing and chatting on Switch 2
Switch 2 is built for playing with people. GameChat lets up to 12 people talk using the built-in microphone, and with a compatible USB camera up to four can video chat and share their screens. The camera shows a green light when it's on and has a privacy shutter, and players under 16 need a parent's permission through the parental controls app.
GameShare lets you share a compatible game with friends nearby, even to an original Switch. Virtual game cards can be loaded on two paired consoles or lent to family members for 14 days, which is handy if two children want the same game.
What Steam Deck does differently
Steam Deck is about the games you already own on PC. Valve rates titles with Deck Verified so you can see what runs well, and the device runs SteamOS 3, which is based on Arch Linux, with a KDE Plasma desktop when you want a computer. You get trackpads with haptic feedback, a gyro, a microSD slot, and a DisplayPort over USB-C that drives a monitor at up to 4K at 120Hz.
The OLED models have a 7.4 inch HDR screen, a 50Whr battery that Valve rates at 3 to 12 hours depending on the game, and weigh about 640 grams. Valve says it ships to the United States, Canada, the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Who each handheld suits
Switch 2 suits families, younger players, and anyone who mostly plays Nintendo's own series or wants local multiplayer on the sofa. Steam Deck suits PC gamers with a big library, people who like tinkering with settings, and anyone who wants one device for games and a bit of desktop work. My advice on Switch 2 or Steam Deck
Start with where your games already are. If you've got years of Steam games, the Deck lets you play them on the sofa straight away. If your favourites are Nintendo's, or the handheld is mainly for children, the Switch 2 is the simpler choice, and its parental controls and GameChat permissions are a real help. Check whether the Switch 2 games you want come on full game cards or game-key cards before you travel without Wi-Fi.

Frequently asked questions
Do game-key cards work without the internet?
Only after the first download. Nintendo says the game downloads the first time you play, and after that you still insert the card each time.
How long does a Steam Deck OLED battery last?
Valve lists 3 to 12 hours of gameplay on the OLED models, depending on the game.
Can I play Switch 2 games on an original Switch?
Not exclusives. Nintendo says a Switch 2 exclusive card won't run on an original Switch, and a Switch 2 Edition card plays the original Switch version.
Is the Switch 2 camera always on?
No. Nintendo says the camera has a green status light when it's on and a built-in privacy shutter.
Which countries does Steam Deck ship to?
Valve says Steam Deck ships to the United States, Canada, the European Union and the United Kingdom.
