Snapchat Not Working (2026): The Fixes Snapchat Says to Try, in Order

When Snapchat isn't working right, Snapchat's own help pages give the same four first steps: update the app, close it completely and reopen it, restart your phone, and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If that doesn't sort it, clear the cache, which Snapchat says won't delete your Memories, Snaps or Chats, then report a bug from Settings, Support and Safety, Bugs and Suggestions.

This page is the fix ladder for an app that's misbehaving on your own phone: crashing, freezing, a camera that won't behave, Chats that won't load, video Snaps with no sound. If you suspect the whole service is down for everyone, that's a different question, and my page on checking whether Snapchat is down covers it. Everything below comes from Snapchat Support's own troubleshooting articles, and the menu paths are as of Nov 2026.

The four fixes Snapchat lists before anything else

Snapchat's main troubleshooting article covers a feature that won't load, isn't responding, isn't showing up or doesn't work the way it should. Here's the full ladder, with the two follow-up steps Snapchat gives elsewhere added at the end:

  1. Update Snapchat. Get the latest version from the iOS App Store, the Google Play Store or the Amazon Appstore, whichever your device uses.
  2. Close the app completely and open it again. Snapchat's wording is closing it completely, not just switching to another app and back.
  3. Restart your phone. A full restart of the device, not just the app.
  4. Swap networks. Switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or the other way round. If changing network fixes it, Snapchat says to contact your data or internet provider, because that's where the problem sits.
  5. Clear the cache. Snapchat suggests this for Chats and Memories problems, and says it won't delete your Memories, Snaps or Chats.
  6. Report a bug. If it still looks broken, tell Snapchat from inside the app so the problem reaches the people who can fix it.

What I like about this list is how plain it looks. Snapchat's camera article and its chat article give almost the same four steps, just in a slightly different order. That tells you something useful: for most glitches, Snapchat's own support team expects one of these four to do the job. It's worth working through all of them before you go looking for anything cleverer, and it's worth doing them in order, so you know which one fixed it.

Match the symptom to the fix

Snapchat has separate help articles for the most common problems. The advice overlaps, but each one adds a twist. Here's how they line up:

SymptomWhat Snapchat says to trySafe to try?
App crashes, freezes or won't openUpdate, close and reopen, restart the phone, swap networks. If the app won't open at all, report it on Snapchat's support siteYes
Chats won't send, load or deleteYou and your friend both update, both check your connection, close and reopen the app, clear the cacheYes, clearing the cache keeps your Chats
Camera problemsSwitch networks, restart the app, check for updates, restart the deviceYes
Video Snaps with no soundCheck silent mode, volume and microphone access, then test your phone's own cameraYes
Memories grey or emptyUpdate, clear the cache, turn the phone off for one minute, repeat if neededYes, but check your backup before you log out or uninstall
Can't update the appUpdate by hand in the App Store on iPhone; Android users update in the Google Play StoreYes

Snapchat's camera article also points to separate help for a zoomed-in camera, shaky or blurry Snaps and video Snaps without sound, so if your camera problem is one of those specific ones, there's more detailed help on Snapchat's support site.

Clearing the cache without losing your Snaps

People hesitate over this step because it sounds destructive. Snapchat says it isn't: clearing the cache won't delete your Memories, Snaps or Chats. It frees up storage, and Snapchat recommends it when Chats won't load or Memories show up empty or grey.

On iPhone, open My Account, tap the gear icon, scroll to App and Privacy, tap My Privacy and Data, then under Manage My Data tap Clear Data, then Clear Cache, then Clear. On Android it's the same path, but under Manage My Data you tap Clear Cache and then Continue. For Memories problems, Snapchat then says to turn your phone off completely for one minute and back on, and to repeat the whole thing if it doesn't help the first time. There's more detail in my walkthrough on clearing the Snapchat cache.

One warning from the same article that's easy to miss: before you log out, log in on another device or uninstall Snapchat, check your Memories are fully backed up. Clearing the cache is the safe step. Uninstalling is the one with something to lose.

When Chats break, your friend's app matters too

This is the part most people never think of. Snapchat's chat article says that if Chats aren't sending, loading or deleting, both of you should be on the latest version of Snapchat, and both of you should check your internet connection. So you can do everything right on your own phone and still have a problem, because the person at the other end is on an old version or a weak signal.

Snapchat suggests trying Wi-Fi or moving somewhere with better mobile signal, closing and reopening the app, and clearing the cache to free up storage. If you run a small business account and one customer's messages won't come through while everyone else's do, that's a good reason to ask them to update before you start changing settings on your end.

No sound in a video Snap is usually a setting

Snapchat's no-sound article starts with three checks that take seconds: make sure your phone isn't in silent mode, make sure the volume isn't muted, and make sure Snapchat has access to your microphone in your device settings.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If that doesn't fix it, the article has a neat test. Record something with your phone's own camera or voice recorder. If the sound doesn't work there either, Snapchat says your device may have a problem and you should contact the maker. And if your iPhone microphone sounds muffled or full of static, Snapchat says to contact Apple. That one test saves a lot of time, because it tells you straight away whether the app or the phone is at fault.

Updating Snapchat by hand on iPhone

If the update won't come through on its own, Snapchat's install article gives the manual route for iPhone: open the App Store, tap your profile icon, scroll down to pending updates and release notes, and tap Update next to Snapchat. If that still doesn't work, Snapchat points you to Apple Support. On Android, Snapchat's main troubleshooting article says to update in the Google Play Store. My guide on how to update Snapchat goes through it in more detail.

Reporting the bug so Snapchat sees it

If you've worked through the ladder and something still looks broken, Snapchat wants a bug report. In My Account, tap the gear icon to open Settings, scroll to Support and Safety, tap Bugs and Suggestions, choose Report a Bug and follow the steps. If the whole app is down, crashing or won't even open, Snapchat says you can still report the issue on its support site instead.

When you write the report, I'd say what you were doing, which fixes you've already tried and whether it happens on Wi-Fi and mobile data alike. If a bug report isn't the right route for your problem, my page on the ways to reach Snapchat support lists the other options.

My verdict on fixing a misbehaving Snapchat

I'd start with the four plain fixes, in Snapchat's order, and give each one a fair go before moving on. Then I'd clear the cache, because Snapchat says it's safe for your Memories, Snaps and Chats. Skip uninstalling and reinstalling as a first move: Snapchat's own advice is to check your Memories are backed up before you uninstall, so it's the step with the most to lose. If it's a chat problem, ask the other person to update too. And if nothing on the ladder works, report the bug from inside the app rather than waiting for it to fix itself.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Snapchat not working on my phone?

Snapchat's help pages don't list causes, they list fixes. Update the app, close it completely and reopen it, restart your phone and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If changing network fixes it, Snapchat says to contact your data or internet provider.

Will clearing the Snapchat cache delete my Memories?

No. Snapchat says clearing the cache won't delete your Memories, Snaps or Chats. It's in Settings, under App and Privacy, My Privacy and Data, Manage My Data.

How do I report a problem with Snapchat?

In My Account tap the gear icon, scroll to Support and Safety, tap Bugs and Suggestions and choose Report a Bug. If the app won't open at all, Snapchat says you can report the issue on its support site.

Why won't my Snapchat Chats send or load?

Snapchat says both you and your friend should update the app and check your connections. Then close and reopen Snapchat and clear the cache to free up storage.

Why do my Snapchat videos have no sound?

Snapchat says to check silent mode, volume and microphone access first. Then record with your phone's own camera: if there's no sound there either, the phone may be the problem.
