Smartsupp alternatives: 10 tools to compare

For an online store, the best Smartsupp alternative is the one that plugs into your shop platform, answers buying questions when you're not around and stays out of the way on a phone. Settle those three points, then try two widgets on your own store before choosing.

Who this list is for: store owners putting chat next to the buy button

A shopper on your product page has one question. Will this fit? Does it ship to me by Friday? Is the blue one back in stock? If nobody answers in the next minute, they'll open another tab and buy somewhere else. That's the moment a live chat widget earns its keep, and it's the moment this page is about.

I've written it for online store owners, often running Shopify, WooCommerce or another cart, who want a chat box that helps people buy. If you're comparing Smartsupp or moving away from it, the questions below will get you to a shortlist faster than a feature grid.

Four store questions that decide the shortlist

Does it plug into your store? The most useful chat tools show the shopper's cart, order history or the page they're on, so you can answer without asking for an order number. Check for an app or plugin for your exact platform.

Who answers when you're asleep? If it's just you, an AI assistant or chatbot that handles delivery and returns questions overnight is worth more than a long feature list. If you have staff, look at how chats are shared and handed over.

How does it look on a phone? Most shoppers browse on mobile. Open your store on your own phone with the widget installed and check it doesn't cover the add-to-basket button.

Do you want more than chat? Some tools add email, social messages, popups or a help centre. Handy if you'll use them, clutter if you won't.

Make sure every shopper notices a reply

A chat bubble that pops up silently is easy to miss, and for shoppers using a screen reader it may not be announced at all. The W3C's explanation of WCAG status messages says the aim is to make users aware of important changes in content. A new reply from your team is exactly that kind of change. When you trial a widget, test it with a screen reader on your phone or laptop and check that new messages are read out without the shopper having to hunt for them.

Small details that change how chat performs in a shop

  • Show it on product, basket and checkout pages, where unanswered questions lose you sales, and consider hiding it on blog posts.
  • Write your welcome message about buying, such as sizing or delivery, rather than a generic hello.
  • Save quick replies for your five most common questions so answers are instant and consistent.
  • Review chat transcripts monthly and add the answers to your product pages, so fewer people need to ask.

If you want to compare more widely, my list of Tidio alternatives looks at AI-led chat from another angle, and these Shopify apps for a small store cover other add-ons worth installing beside your chat.

My advice for store owners choosing a chat widget

Start with your store platform and who'll answer, because those two facts rule out most options. Then install your top two on a quiet day, ask a friend to shop your site on their phone and send a question, and see which experience feels like talking to a helpful shop assistant. That's the one to keep.

Once it's live, check your chat history every few weeks. If the same question keeps coming up, that's a gap on your product page, not a chat problem. Fix the page and the widget gets quieter, which is exactly what you want.

Frequently asked questions

Does live chat help an online store sell more?

It can, when it answers buying questions on product and checkout pages quickly. The effect depends on how fast you reply and whether the widget is placed where shoppers hesitate.

Should a small store use a chatbot or a person?

Many small stores use both: a bot or AI assistant for common questions about delivery and returns, and a person for anything about a specific order or product choice.

Will a chat widget slow down my store?

Any extra script adds some load. Test your page speed before and after installing, and check whether the widget loads after the main content.

Can I see the customer's order inside the chat?

Some tools connect to your store platform and show cart or order details beside the conversation. Check for an app or plugin for your exact platform before you choose.
