Yes, Etsy's India pages describe shops run from India, but new shops can only sell internationally and you get paid through a Payoneer account in US dollars, with your GSTIN verified. Check that India appears in the shop-opening dropdown before you start.
You can sell on Etsy from India, but the route is narrower than most videos make it sound. Etsy's own India pages describe an export-only shop paid through a Payoneer account, with a tax ID check at the start. If you're an Indian maker or small business owner thinking about opening a shop, here's what Etsy publishes, where the sources disagree, and what I'd check before spending any time on listings.
The two rules that shape every Indian Etsy shop
First, Etsy's India seller article says new shops opened in India can only sell internationally. Shops enrolled in Etsy Payments from India also can't accept domestic sales at this time. So a shop in Jaipur selling block-printed cushion covers can ship to buyers in the UK or the US, but not to a neighbour in Jaipur.
Second, Etsy's Payments policy lists India among the countries where sellers have to onboard by registering directly with a separate payments provider, Payoneer. You don't just tick a box inside Etsy. You connect a Payoneer Payment Account, and Etsy pays into that.
That second rule is why so many first-time sellers get stuck. They open a shop, list five items, and only then find that the payment step needs a third party and some paperwork.
Is it open to new sellers? Where the sources disagree
I want to be straight about a conflict. Etsy's India help article describes how new Indian shops are set up, which suggests new sellers can come in. A third-party guide I read says new Indian shops can't open. I'd trust Etsy's own wording over a third-party guide, but Etsy changes its country rules over time, so I wouldn't bet your week on either.
The test is simple and free. Start the shop opening process and look at the country dropdown. Etsy says that if you don't see your country there, selling isn't available in that country at this time. If India appears and you can reach the Payoneer step, you're through the first gate.
Money step by step: Payoneer, US dollars and your rupee account
Here's the payment chain as Etsy describes it:
- A buyer pays on Etsy.
- Etsy deposits your funds in US dollars into your Payoneer account, each Monday at 11:30am Eastern time, which is 9pm in India.
- You ask Payoneer to send the money to your Indian bank, and Payoneer converts it to rupees on the way.
- The rupees land in a bank account in your name, in India.
Etsy's help centre says that for Payoneer countries it only supports deposits in United States dollars. The conversion into rupees happens on Payoneer's side, so Payoneer's rate and any withdrawal charge come out of what you keep. Etsy's general help says funds from a Payoneer withdrawal typically take 2 to 5 business days to appear in your bank.
The Reserve Bank of India issues the rupee, which is divided into 100 paise, but your day-to-day concern is the exchange rate you're given at withdrawal. Compare it with the mid-market rate before you commit to a product price.
GSTIN, set-up fee and the fees that follow
Etsy's India article says new sellers in India must verify their GSTIN, so have your tax registration details ready before you start. It also says a one-time set-up fee of 10 USD is paid during onboarding.
On each sale, the Etsy Payments policy table lists the payment processing fee for India as 5% + 25 INR. Etsy's fees page also mentions a Regulatory Operating fee in India and Vietnam, so look at the fee table in your own Shop Manager for the full picture before you set prices.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you list in a currency other than your payment account currency, Etsy adds a 2.5% currency conversion fee. Because your Payoneer account receives US dollars, listing in US dollars is the simplest way to avoid that extra charge.
Identity checks and name matching
Etsy asks individuals to verify identity and, in certain locations, give a tax number. Taxpayer details are also requested as you approach the relevant thresholds, and Etsy says it may suspend selling if the information is wrong.
The practical rule I'd follow is to keep every name identical: the name on your shop's legal and tax page, your Payoneer account and your bank account. Mismatches are the dull reason many payouts stall.
What can go wrong for Indian sellers
- Expecting domestic orders. Etsy says the shop is export-only, so plan for postage and customs to other countries from day one.
- Pricing before fees. Etsy's 5% + 25 INR, the Payoneer withdrawal rate and the 2.5% conversion fee all stack up.
- Using a family member's bank account. The name has to match, and Etsy asks for a bank account in your own details.
- Skipping the tax conversation. I'm not a tax adviser, and Etsy doesn't give tax advice either. Speak to a chartered accountant about GST and income tax on foreign earnings.

One more idea once your shop is running: Indian creators often send traffic to a shop from social posts, and my look at what Instagram can pay creators in India shows how that audience can become a second income stream.
