Australians can sell on Etsy with an ordinary bank account, because Australia is on Etsy's Etsy Payments list without a Payoneer requirement. Etsy says your bank must hold a residential address, not a PO box, and it collects GST only on certain orders to Australian buyers, not on local sales.
Australians often assume the hard part of selling on Etsy is the shop itself. In my experience of reading these help pages, it's the small admin rules that trip people up: which address your bank holds, what happens to GST, and how long the first payout takes. Etsy's help centre is specific about all three for Australia, so let's go through it.
Your bank address has to be a street address
Etsy lists Australia among its Etsy Payments countries with no asterisk, so you connect an ordinary Australian bank account and don't need a Payoneer account. The one rule Etsy singles out for Australian sellers is about addresses. You must have a residential address on file with your Australian bank, that same address has to be used for Etsy Payments, and Etsy says it can't accept a PO box as a residential address.
If your bank only has a postal address for you, fix that first. A mismatch between the address on your bank record and the one on your shop is the kind of detail that holds up a deposit. Etsy also says a valid credit, debit or reloadable prepaid card is needed on the account, and that it can't send sale funds to a PayPal account or to a card.
GST on Etsy sales: who collects it, and who doesn't
This is where Australia differs most from its neighbours. Etsy says Australia requires it to collect and remit GST on applicable goods sold to Australian buyers, on orders of less than or equal to 1,000 AUD. Above that, GST and any other taxes are collected at the border instead.
Etsy then adds a limit that matters for local sellers. It doesn't collect GST on goods purchased from and delivered to locations in Australia, and it requires sellers to list their prices inclusive of GST. So if you're in Australia and posting to an Australian buyer, the GST question is yours to work out with an accountant or the tax office, not something Etsy sorts out at checkout.
Etsy's tax overview also lists Low Value Goods imported into the EU, UK, Australia, Norway and New Zealand as cases where Etsy charges tax to the buyer. If you ship overseas, that's worth a read before you set shipping prices.
What a sale costs: Australian and overseas buyers
Etsy's fee table splits Australia in two. A bank account in Australia is charged 3% plus 0.25 AUD for domestic orders and 4% plus 0.25 AUD for international orders. Both sit alongside the 6.5% transaction fee Etsy charges on the whole order. Etsy says processing fees are subject to VAT where that applies.
Notice that the lower rate belongs to domestic orders. If most of your buyers are overseas, the higher line is the one that will show up most in your payment account.
GST on Etsy's fees and the monthly invoice
Etsy lists Australia among the countries that get downloadable VAT invoices for seller fees, which for you means tax on the fees Etsy charges. If you haven't submitted a tax ID, the charge sits in your payment account balance and an invoice arrives on the first of the following month. If you have submitted one, Etsy says it won't charge you the tax on those fees, and the invoice will say so.
Etsy is careful to say it can't give tax advice, and neither can I. Ask a local accountant whether you need to register and how to claim anything back.

How and when the money reaches an Australian account
By default, new sellers are paid weekly, every Monday, and you can switch to daily, biweekly or monthly in your payment settings. Daily deposits have a minimum, listed as AUD 25.00 for an Australian dollar account. Under that, nothing goes out that day.
For a brand-new shop the first wait is longer. Etsy says funds from a new seller's sales are generally eligible for deposit 14 days after the sale. Once a deposit is sent, your bank can take 1 to 5 business days to show it, and if the deposit day falls on a weekend or holiday it moves to the next business day.
Reserves, tracking and Australian shipping labels
A new shop can have a reserve, which holds back part of each physical sale. Etsy says sellers in Australia, the US, Canada and the UK can buy shipping labels on Etsy that may include tracking, and once Etsy can see an order is in transit, reserved funds move to your current balance. Sales of digital items aren't held in reserve.

Selling overseas also means getting paid in other currencies from time to time, and how Payoneer works for Australians explains that side. If you're weighing Etsy against books, Amazon KDP payments in Australia shows how a different platform pays into the same sort of bank account, and selling on Etsy from Canada is a useful comparison for how another country handles GST.
