Roku vs Apple TV: Which Streaming Box Suits Your Living Room?

Roku suits households that want an easy streaming player, a huge choice of free TV and a remote nobody needs teaching. Apple TV 4K suits iPhone and HomePod homes that want Siri voice control, smart home control and room-filling sound. If you want simple and free channels, pick Roku; if you live in Apple's world, Apple TV 4K is the better fit.

A Roku player and an Apple TV 4K do the same basic job, putting your streaming apps on the big screen. Past that they're built for very different homes. I read Roku's site and players page, Roku's App Store listing and Apple's Apple TV 4K page.

Why people pick a Roku

The Roku range starts with a small HD stick and climbs to Roku Ultra with 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision, a backlit rechargeable Voice Remote Pro and a lost remote finder for when it slips down the sofa. There's even a Roku Streambar SE if you want better sound and streaming in one.

The big draw is free TV. Roku's site points you to The Roku Channel for free films and live TV, and the Roku Remote app adds a phone keyboard, voice search, casting photos to the TV and private listening through your headphones.

Why people pick Apple TV 4K

Apple's page leads with the new Siri AI. Apple TV 4K now has three far-field microphones built in, so you can talk to Siri from across the room to find a film, ask where a show was filmed or dim the lights, without picking up the remote. Once it's set up with your iPhone or iPad, Siri draws on your personal context.

Sound is the other strength. You can pair Apple TV 4K with four HomePod speakers for three-dimensional sound, and Whole Room Audio spreads sound evenly for parties or match day. Apple's own shows and films sit in the Apple TV app alongside everything else.

Cord-cutters can add live TV, and the YouTube TV cost breakdown shows what that costs.

The voice and sound detail

The microphones are the change worth knowing about. With built-in far-field mics, Apple TV 4K behaves more like a smart speaker sitting under your TV, which matters if you already control your lights or heating by voice. Roku keeps voice in the remote, which is simpler but means finding the remote first.

Apple's page also says a new Apple TV 4K is on the way, so if you're choosing it for Apple features, it's worth checking you're getting the current model rather than old stock.

Whichever box you choose, you'll still need subscriptions, starting with the Netflix plans.

Who each streaming box suits

Roku suits families who want simple menus and lots of free TV, second TVs in bedrooms and kitchens, and anyone using a mix of phones. Apple TV 4K suits homes with iPhones and HomePods, people who'd like to control the house by voice from the sofa, and film fans who care about sound. If you're interested in how Apple builds loyalty like this, my piece on Apple's marketing strategy explains a lot, and here's how to find the sleep timer on YouTube for late-night viewing on either box.

My advice on Roku or Apple TV

Count the Apple devices in your house. If everyone's on iPhone and you own a HomePod or two, Apple TV 4K will feel like part of the family from day one. If your house mixes Android and iPhone, or you mainly want free channels and an easy remote, a Roku does the job well. For the main TV, choose a 4K Roku or the Apple box; save the HD stick for a spare room.
