How to Land a Remote Job on Indeed (Without Wasting Hours Scrolling)

The short version: Indeed hosts hundreds of thousands of remote job listings but the default search surfaces a lot of noise. Use the right filters, target the right job categories, and apply within 24 hours of a listing going live to get serious response rates.

Why I am writing about Indeed specifically

I get asked constantly about job boards. LinkedIn, Upwork, Remote.co, We Work Remotely, FlexJobs. People want to know which one is worth their time.

My answer surprises them: Indeed.

Not because it is glamorous. It is not. It is the Tesco of job boards, which is exactly why it works. Volume, speed, and a free application process with no subscription fee. For someone who needs remote work income quickly, that combination is hard to beat.

But the raw Indeed experience is terrible if you do not know how to search. Here is what I have learned from coaching people through their remote job searches and from my own work as a consultant watching the market.

The problem with searching "remote" on Indeed

Type "remote" into the what box and "remote" into the where box and you will get a wall of results that includes jobs that are not remote, jobs that say "remote consideration available" (which means nothing), and sponsored listings for commission-only sales roles dressed up as marketing jobs.

Indeed has a dedicated remote filter. Use it. Here is how.

  • Search your job title or skill in the "what" box (for example: "customer service", "data entry", "copywriter", "bookkeeper")
  • Leave the "where" box blank or type "remote"
  • After the results load, click the "Remote" toggle under the search bar. This is the key step most people skip.
  • Then sort by Date Posted and filter for "Last 3 days"

That last step is the one that changes your application success rate more than anything else. Research from Greenhouse and Lever (two large applicant tracking systems) consistently shows that applications submitted within the first 48 hours of a posting going live are significantly more likely to get a callback. After 72 hours, most roles are already deep in the review pile.

Which remote job categories on Indeed pay well

People assume remote jobs on Indeed are all low-pay customer service gigs. That is not accurate anymore. Here are the categories where I see competitive remote roles posted regularly, with realistic pay ranges.

Customer success and support

Entry level remote support roles at companies like Zapier, HubSpot, and Shopify (yes, they do post on Indeed) pay between $18 and $28 per hour. Senior customer success managers at SaaS companies can hit $70,000 to $95,000 a year. These roles appear on Indeed because those companies use broad sourcing.

Data entry and virtual admin

Yes, data entry is real and it does pay. Platforms like Clickworker and TELUS International post on Indeed and pay $14 to $20 per hour for remote work that has no experience requirement. Not exciting, but reliable for someone building their income back up.

Medical and insurance coding and billing

I know health topics are sensitive so I will keep this brief: remote billing and coding roles at companies like Change Healthcare and Optum (both post on Indeed regularly) pay $22 to $38 per hour and are in consistently high demand. A short course from AAPC is the usual entry path.

Marketing and content

SEO writers, email marketers, and paid media specialists are all over Indeed. Freelance content roles pay $25 to $55 per hour. In-house remote content manager roles at mid-size SaaS companies pay $55,000 to $80,000 a year. Demand&Gen agencies and digital-first brands like Semrush and Ahrefs have hired through Indeed.

Bookkeeping and accounting

Remote bookkeeping roles at small-business accounting firms and through platforms like Bench (which actively recruits on Indeed) pay $20 to $35 per hour. No CPA required for the entry level. QuickBooks Online certification, which you can get for free through the QuickBooks ProAdvisor programme, makes a real difference to your application.

IT support and software testing

Tier 1 remote IT helpdesk roles pay $18 to $30 per hour. QA testers with no coding experience earn $20 to $35 per hour. Companies like Conduent and Alorica post these roles in bulk on Indeed. CompTIA A+ certification opens most of the IT doors.

The Indeed Easy Apply trap

Easy Apply is a mixed blessing. It is fast, which is good. But it means you are competing with hundreds of people who clicked the button in 30 seconds without tailoring anything.

My rule: use Easy Apply only when you have a strong Indeed profile that has been filled out, because Indeed pulls your profile into Easy Apply submissions. A half-empty profile is worse than no profile at all.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Here is what your Indeed profile must have to make Easy Apply worth doing:

  • A headline with your actual job title and one specific skill (example: "Remote Customer Success Manager | SaaS Onboarding Specialist")
  • A summary of four to six sentences written in plain language, not buzzwords
  • Every relevant skill tagged, because Indeed's algorithm surfaces candidates to employers partly based on skill matches
  • At least two work history entries with specific results, not just responsibilities
  • A current CV uploaded as a PDF so employers can download a clean version

Setting up job alerts so you are always first

This is the single highest-value feature on Indeed that barely anyone uses.

After you run a search with your preferred filters, scroll to the bottom of the results page and click "Get new jobs for this search". Set the alert to daily. Create three to five different alerts for variations of your target role.

For example if you are targeting remote marketing work, set alerts for:

  • "email marketing remote"
  • "content strategist remote"
  • "social media manager remote"
  • "marketing coordinator remote"
  • "copywriter remote"

When an alert lands in your inbox at 7am, apply by 9am. That is not an exaggeration. Speed matters on high-volume job boards.

How to spot fake remote jobs on Indeed

There are listings on Indeed that are not legitimate. Here is how to identify them quickly.

  • The pay range is vague or suspiciously wide (example: "$20 to $150 per hour" for a basic admin role)
  • The company name is generic and has no Indeed company profile page
  • The job description asks you to buy equipment, software, or a starter kit
  • The role is for a "brand ambassador" or "client coordinator" with no fixed salary
  • The contact email is a Gmail or Yahoo address rather than a company domain

Before applying, click the company name to see their Indeed profile. Legitimate employers have review histories. Zero reviews plus a new listing date plus vague pay is a reliable red flag combination.

One thing the top-ranking pages do not tell you

Indeed has a feature called "Employer Insights" visible to job seekers on some listings. It shows you how many people have applied, how your profile compares to other applicants, and whether the employer is actively reviewing applications.

If the listing shows 500 plus applications and the employer has not reviewed anyone in five days, skip it. Move to a listing where the employer is listed as "actively reviewing" and applications are under 50. This information is right there on the listing page and most people walk straight past it.

Frequently asked questions

Are remote jobs on Indeed real or mostly scams?

The majority of remote jobs on Indeed are legitimate. Indeed has invested heavily in fraud detection since 2022 and removes flagged listings regularly. The most common issue is not scams but misleading listings where "remote" means remote only during a trial period. Always click through to the full listing and check the employer's company page before applying.

How do I filter for fully remote jobs on Indeed rather than hybrid roles?

Run your search, then use the "Remote" toggle filter after results load. In the job description itself, look for the phrase "fully remote" or "work from anywhere". Listings that say "hybrid" or "on-site flexibility" are not fully remote. There is no separate Indeed filter for fully remote versus hybrid, so you have to read the description.

What remote jobs on Indeed hire with no experience?

Data entry, remote customer service, online chat support, transcription, and content moderation roles regularly hire with no prior remote experience. Companies like TELUS International, Alorica, and Concentrix post these roles on Indeed continuously. Pay ranges from $13 to $20 per hour depending on the role and the US state or country you are based in.

Is it worth paying for Indeed Resume to get more views?

For most job seekers, no. A complete, keyword-rich free Indeed profile performs well in employer searches. The paid visibility boost is more useful if you are passively job hunting and want recruiters to find you without applying. If you are actively applying to remote roles, your time is better spent on a strong profile and fast applications than on a paid subscription.
