RC325: Changing Your Address With the CRA on Paper

RC325 is the CRA's Address and Telephone Number Change Request. You use it to tell the CRA about a new mailing address, a new home address or new phone numbers when you'd rather not use My Account. You can't use it to change your name or date of birth, or if you've never filed a tax return with the CRA. The CRA says the online change is faster.

Everything below comes from the CRA's RC325 form page and the 2026 version of the form, RC325 E (26), as of October 2026.

What the RC325 can change

  • Your mailing address.
  • Your home address, if it's different from your mailing address.
  • Your home, work and other phone numbers.

What it can't do

You want toRC325?
Change your mailing or home addressYes
Update your phone numbersYes
Change your nameNo
Change your date of birthNo
Update details if you've never filed a return with the CRANo

The form asks for personal details, including your social insurance number and date of birth; if you don't have one but were given an individual tax number or a temporary taxation number, the form says to keep using that number.

Why the timing matters

The insight most people miss is that this form protects payments, not just post. The CRA says that telling it your new address in advance helps you avoid a disruption in benefit payments such as the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit, related provincial or territorial payments and Canada workers benefit advance payments. If you're moving, send the change before the move rather than after the first missed payment. The form has an effective date box for exactly that.

Mailing address versus home address

The form treats them as two separate things. Your mailing address is where the CRA sends letters; your home address is where you live. If they're the same, tick the box that says so. If they're different, fill in the second section with your current home address on file, the new home address and the date of the move. The mailing address fields include PO box and rural route boxes, so a PO box can be your mailing address while the home section holds the address you live at.

Filling in the RC325, step by step

  1. Enter your first name and initial, last name, social insurance number and date of birth.
  2. Write the current mailing address the CRA has on file, then the new mailing address and its effective date. Add a care of name if the post goes to another person or an organization.
  3. Enter your new phone numbers.
  4. If your home address differs from your mailing address, complete that section too, including the date you moved.
  5. Sign and date the certification. If you're the legal representative, tick that box first.

The address fields include a country, state and zip code line for addresses outside Canada, so the same form works if you're moving abroad.

If you're signing for someone else

A legal representative, such as an executor or administrator, a person with power of attorney or a legal guardian, can sign the form. The CRA's note is the step people forget: make sure a complete copy of the legal document that supports your authority is either included or already with the CRA before you ask to change the taxpayer's address. Without it, the request can't go through.

Common situations

SituationWhat to fill in
Moving to a new home in CanadaNew mailing address, effective date, and home address if it differs
Moving abroadNew mailing address with the country, state and zip code line
New phone number onlyYour details, the new numbers, and the signature
Acting for a parent under power of attorneyTheir details, the new address, and the legal representative box, with the authority papers on file
Executor of an estateThe deceased's details, the new mailing address for the estate, and the legal representative box

The form is marked Protected B when completed, because it carries a social insurance number and date of birth, so treat the paper copy as you would any tax document. It's also available in French, in large print and as e-text from the CRA form page.

Where to send it

Send the completed form to the CRA tax centre that applies to you. The form lists three: Jonquiere Tax Centre, PO Box 1900 Stn LCD, Jonquiere QC G7S 5J1; Winnipeg Tax Centre, PO Box 14005 Stn Main, Winnipeg MB R3C 0E3; and Sudbury Tax Centre, PO Box 20000 Stn A, Sudbury ON P3A 5C1. The form points to the CRA offices page to find which one is yours.

Online or paper

The CRA's own notice on the form page is that you can change your address faster online, through Change my address in My Account. The paper form makes sense when you can't sign in, you're acting as a legal representative, or you'd simply rather have a signed record. For a business account, the place to check is My Business Account.

The verdict

If you can sign in, change your address online and skip the post. If you can't, the RC325 is short and does the job, as long as you send it before you move and, if you're acting for someone, the authority papers are already with the CRA. Once it's done, your next return, the T1, should show the new address too.
