Pinterest Analytics shows how your Pins perform: impressions, saves, Pin clicks, outbound clicks and more. You need a business account to see it. On a computer, click the hamburger icon at the top left and choose Overview under Analytics; in the app, tap your profile picture, then the chart bar icon at the top left, then Analytics.
The Overview page gives you the last 30 days at a glance: overall performance, performance over time, your top boards and your top Pins. From there you can filter and export the lot.
Here's how to get in, what each metric means in Pinterest's own definitions, and a few quirks worth knowing before you panic about a number going down.
Getting into Pinterest Analytics
On a computer:
- Log in to your Pinterest business account.
- Click the hamburger icon at the top left of the page.
- Under Analytics, select Overview.
In the app:
- Log in to your business account in the Pinterest app.
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap the chart bar icon at the top left.
- Select Analytics.
If you don't see any of this, you're probably on a personal account. Pinterest says you need a business account to view analytics, and converting keeps your Pins and followers.
The metrics, in plain English
| Metric | What Pinterest counts |
|---|---|
| Impressions | Times your Pins or ads were on screen |
| Saves | Times people saved your Pin to a board |
| Pin clicks | Clicks that open your Pin in closeup |
| Outbound clicks | Actions that take people to a destination off Pinterest |
| Engagements | Saves, Pin clicks, outbound clicks, carousel swipes and collection clicks combined |
| Engagement rate | Engagements divided by the times your Pins were seen |
| Video views | Views of at least two seconds with half the video in view |
| Total audience | People who've seen or engaged with your Pins |
| Engaged audience | People who've engaged with your Pins |
Every Pin, whatever its format, gets the core set: impressions, saves, Pin clicks, follows and outbound clicks. Video Pins add views and watch time.
Why your real-time numbers can go down
This catches people out. Pinterest's real-time figures are estimates and can change, and Pinterest says they might decrease. So if yesterday's numbers look lower today, that's the estimate settling, not people un-seeing your Pin.
Real-time data also isn't available for audience metrics, or when you use the content type, age or gender filters, or split your data.
Filters worth using
- Date range: custom ranges for the past year and a half, plus real-time estimates from the last 48 hours.
- Content type: organic Pins on one side, promoted Pins on the other, or both together.
- Pin format: compare images and videos.
- Device: mobile, desktop or tablet.
- Claimed accounts: see what people save from your claimed website.
- Source: your own Pins versus Pins other people created from your claimed website or account.
On desktop, click Export at the top right after filtering to download a CSV snapshot. In the app, the age and gender filters aren't available; Pinterest tells you to use a browser for those.
Video metrics, and where they hide
If you post video Pins, there's a second set of numbers, but you'll only see them when you select the video Pins filter (or video ads, if you run them). They include:
- Average video play time: how long people spent playing the video and any static image cards in the Pin.
- 10-second plays: how many times your video was watched for at least 10 seconds.
- Total play time: the total minutes people spent watching.
- Video views: at least two seconds with half the video in view.
If your average play time is short, the first couple of seconds of the video are the place to fix. A clearer opening frame or text on screen usually helps people stay.
The outbound clicks detail to know
Outbound clicks are only measured from the date the link was added. If you go back and add your website link to an older Pin, don't expect its history to fill in. The clicks start counting from that day.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
For a business, outbound clicks are usually the number that matters most, because they're people leaving Pinterest to visit you. Saves tell you a Pin is useful. Outbound clicks tell you it's bringing people to your site.
An odd one about Idea Pins
If you posted Idea Pins a while ago, Pinterest counts all organic Idea Pins created before 16 August 2023 as video format. Single-image Idea Pins created on or after that date count as images. So if your old Idea Pins show up under video, that's why.
What to do with the numbers
Pinterest's own suggestions are practical. If most impressions are on mobile, make sure your website works well on a phone. If one item on your site drives traffic, make sure it's available, feature it in more Pins and save it to more boards.
I'd add one more: look at which boards are in your top list and make more Pins for those topics. And if you want to know what to make next, Pinterest Trends, under Analyze performance, shows what people are searching for in your region. If you blog, my guide to Pinterest for blogging shows how to turn those Pins into readers. If Pinterest is part of your website traffic plan, my notes on getting Pinterest traffic without ads pair well with this.
My advice
Check monthly, not hourly. Real-time numbers wobble, and Pinterest Pins can take a while to find their audience. Watch outbound clicks and saves over the last 30 days, compare formats with the Pin format filter, and put your effort into whatever's sending people to your site.
