Perplexity Spaces are now called Projects: Perplexity's old Spaces help article opens as "What are Projects?". A Project keeps your searches, Perplexity Computer tasks, files, instructions and connected tools together. To make one, select Projects in the left sidebar, then New project, and give it a title, an optional description and instructions.
If you set up Spaces months ago, nothing's lost: the idea is the same, it just does more. Projects add shared files, Perplexity Computer tasks and Brain, a memory that builds up as you work. Here's how to use them, and the limits worth knowing before you invite a team, from Perplexity's own help centre, checked as of October 2026.
How to create a Project
- Select Projects in the left sidebar, then New project. You can also use the plus icon that appears when you hover over the Projects header.
- Give it a title of up to 50 characters and, if you like, a description of up to 1,000 characters, an icon and a colour.
- Open the Project's settings and add instructions of up to 8,000 characters, telling Perplexity how to work inside this Project.
- Upload files or folders, or add files from a connected source.
- Choose who to share it with. Projects are private by default.
You can also start a Project from an existing session, and Perplexity will suggest a title, description and instructions. In a Computer task, use Convert session to project to carry your files and artifacts across. There's no limit on how many Projects you can create.
Project limits at a glance
| Limit | What Perplexity says |
|---|---|
| Title | Up to 50 characters |
| Description | Up to 1,000 characters |
| Instructions | Up to 8,000 characters |
| Files per Project | Up to 10,000 files and 5 GB in total |
| Size of one file | Up to 100 MB, any file type |
| Contributors | Up to 5, or 9,999 if the owner is in an organisation or a verified student or educator |
| Number of Projects | No limit |
Perplexity says the file limits are the same for everyone on every plan. Projects created before August 2026 may hold more than 5 GB; they still work, but you can't upload new files to them.
Sharing and roles
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Full control, including owner-only settings such as automatic Brain updates, the project summary, personal memory and approving join requests |
| Can edit | Edit context, files, connectors, skills, people, defaults and channels |
| Can view | Read the Project and its shared sessions and files |
Two details catch people out. First, the owner doesn't count toward the 5-person limit, but pending invitations do, and viewers count alongside editors. Second, Projects can't be made publicly queryable. On personal accounts the only option is invited people only; organisation-wide sharing is an Enterprise feature.
When someone with view-only access wants to help, they see a note saying they have view-only access and can select Request edit access. People who open a Project without access see that it's private, with a way to ask for access or contact the owner. The owner approves or denies these under Requests to edit. If a Project hits its contributor limit, Perplexity tells you, and you'll need to cancel a pending invitation or remove someone to free a place.
Owners can also switch on a project summary, which Perplexity describes as a running status update of the work done in the Project. For a client project with several people dipping in and out, that's the setting I'd turn on first.
Files from connected apps don't stay in sync
This is the insight I'd pass on to any team. Perplexity says files you add from a connected source are one-time copies. If you update or delete the original in Google Drive, Notion or another connected app, the copy in your Project doesn't change. To work from the latest version, ask Perplexity to fetch it again through the connector, or add the file again.
Connectors have another quirk. Choosing a connector for a Project shares the source and its instructions with every member, but not anyone's sign-in. For tools that use your own login, like Microsoft 365, Google Drive or Notion, each member who wants results from that source has to connect their own account.
Brain: the Project's memory
Brain builds ongoing memory for the work done in a Project. You can see it in the Brain tab, or under Sources, then Brain, in the new settings layout. Watch the credits: automatic Brain updates use the Project owner's credits, while running an update yourself uses your own. The owner decides whether Brain updates automatically.
Settings worth changing
- Instructions and web links or domains to prioritise for every query.
- The default mode, Search or Computer, and the default Computer model.
- Whether queries can draw on the session creator's personal memory. On personal accounts this switches off and can't be changed once the Project has other members.
- Slack or Microsoft Teams channels bound to the Project, so their context is included.
- Pinning, so important Projects appear in the sidebar.
How Projects compare
If you've used Gemini's version, my guide to Gemini projects shows how Google does it. For the basics of searching well inside a Project, start with how to use Perplexity, and for my wider view of the tool, read my Perplexity review.

My take
Projects are what Spaces should always have been: one place for the instructions, files and history of a piece of work. Set clear instructions on day one, keep an eye on that 5-person limit, and remember connected files are snapshots, not live links.
