Decide what you need to measure before you compare tools. Classic search rankings and visibility in AI answers are different things, and AI answers change from one run to the next. Check how often each tracker checks, which countries and cities it covers and how it counts a position, then shortlist by the kind of buyer you are.
Two rank trackers can show the same keyword at different positions on the same morning, and both can be right. They may check from different places, at different times, on different devices. Once AI answers are added to the mix, the numbers drift even further apart.
If you're moving on from Nightwatch, the eight trackers below are listed in no particular order and grouped by buyer: agencies that report to clients, people who want a simpler tracker, and teams that want a full SEO platform. Several now sell AI search tracking next to classic rankings, and it's worth knowing what that measures.
Rankings and AI answers measure different things
A classic ranking is a position on a results page for a keyword, from a place, on a device. AI visibility is whether your brand or page appears in an answer from a chatbot or AI search tool, and those answers change between runs. A tracker can report both, but they aren't the same metric, and one shouldn't be read as proof of the other.
It's safest to treat AI visibility features as each vendor's own claim about what it checks, and you'll want to see the method before you trust the chart.
Three things to check about each tracker
- Frequency. How often each keyword is checked, and whether on-demand checks are extra.
- Locations. Which countries and cities it can track from, and whether that matches where your customers search.
- Counting. How it counts a position when the results page includes maps, videos or an AI answer.

My advice for SEO teams changing trackers
Don't switch on the strength of a feature page. The numbers you report to clients or your boss will change the day you move, so plan for that: keep the old tool running for a short overlap, explain the change in your next report and agree which numbers you'll treat as the record from then on.
Run the same keywords through two tools
Import the same 50 keywords into two trackers from your shortlist and let them run side by side for a week. Pick a mix: a few you rank well for, a few on page two and a few local terms if location matters to you.
At the end of the week, compare both tools with what your own search console shows for the same terms. The tracker whose numbers sit closest to that, and whose reports you'd be happy to send, is the one to keep.
Do you make rank tracking or SEO software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

Frequently asked questions
Why do rank trackers show different positions for the same keyword?
They may check from different locations, at different times or on different devices, and they may count features such as maps or videos differently. Small differences between tools aren't a sign that either one's wrong.
What is AI visibility tracking?
It checks whether your brand or pages appear in answers from AI chat and search tools. Because those answers change between runs, treat the results as a trend rather than a fixed position.
Do I need daily rank tracking?
Agencies and sites in fast-moving markets often want it. Smaller sites can usually learn just as much from weekly checks, as long as they're tracking the right keywords.
Should I use a rank tracker or my search console data?
You'll want both. Search console shows real impressions and clicks for your own site, while a rank tracker shows positions for chosen keywords, including terms where you get no clicks yet.
Are these rank trackers ranked?
No. They're in no particular order and grouped by the kind of buyer each one serves.
