Is Aura Legit? Insurance, Data Privacy and Refund Limits (2026)

Yes, Aura is a real company that sells identity theft protection, credit monitoring and online safety tools. Its own pages name the insurers behind its cover and offer a 60-day refund on annual plans bought direct. The catch is that Aura itself says no one can prevent all identity theft, and its refund and cover terms have conditions.

Aura's adverts are everywhere, and anything that asks for your Social Security number deserves a hard look before you hand it over. I've read Aura's own about page, homepage and privacy policy, so here's what it says, what it promises and where the small print matters.

Who is behind Aura

According to Aura's about page, Hari Ravichandran is founder and CEO, and he says his own identity was stolen more than a decade ago, which led him to create the company. The page says Aura began in 2017 as iSubscribed and took the Aura name in 2019, and that in 2024 it split into two companies, Aura and Point Wild, which was formerly called Pango.

Aura's privacy policy names Aura Sub, LLC and its affiliates as the controller of your data and gives a Boston, Massachusetts base. So this is a company with named leadership, a history you can trace and a stated place of business, which is a good start but doesn't prove the service suits you.

What Aura sells

Aura's about page lists identity theft protection, credit monitoring, online data removal, a VPN, antivirus, a password manager and parental controls among its products. Which of those you get depends on the plan, and Aura says full plan access depends on identity verification and credit eligibility.

If you're weighing the password manager or VPN side, my 1Password review shows what a dedicated password tool does, which makes it easier to judge what you'd be paying extra for in a bundle. For families, my guide to the best parental control apps is a useful comparison too.

Aura's insurance and what it covers

Aura says its identity theft insurance is underwritten and administered by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, an Assurant company. Its cyber insurance is underwritten and administered by Houston Casualty Company, a Tokio Marine company. Naming the insurers is more transparent than many rivals manage.

There are two cautions. Aura says coverage may not be available in all jurisdictions, and its pages are inconsistent on limits: the homepage mentions 1 million dollars per adult member while another section mentions up to 5 million, so I wouldn't rely on either number. Read the actual policy documents for your plan and your state before you count on the cover.

Aura's refund and free trial rules

Aura offers a 60-day money-back guarantee, but it applies only to annual plans bought through its websites or Customer Support, not Amazon. To use it you need to cancel your membership and request the refund within 60 days of the purchase. Aura also says its free trial can be redeemed only once per customer.

So check how you're buying before you pay. If you pick up a plan through a retailer, the refund promise on Aura's own site may not apply to you.

What Aura does with your data

Because Aura asks for sensitive details, the privacy policy matters. It says that for identity products it collects information including a Social Security number, plus identity verification details, billing details and, if you connect your inbox, email content, sender addresses and subject lines, though not attachments.

On selling data, the policy says neither Aura nor any of its companies sell your personal data. It then adds that third-party advertising pixels and cookies on its website are treated as a sale or share under some laws, and that you can opt out through its Your Privacy Choices page. That's a fair disclosure, but it's worth using that opt-out if you care about tracking.

The honest limits of Aura

  • The site says no one can prevent all identity theft or monitor all transactions effectively.
  • Its credit score is educational, based on the Equifax file, and isn't the score lenders typically use.
  • Aura says alerts for child monitoring aren't real time and may not be 100% accurate or timely.
  • Its claim of alerting you to credit fraud up to 650x faster than competitors comes from a 2025 study that Aura paid for, so treat it as a marketing figure.

None of that makes Aura a scam. It just means the adverts promise more peace of mind than any monitoring service can deliver. A freeze on your credit files with the credit bureaus is free and worth looking into whichever service you pick.

Fake Aura calls, emails and sites

A brand that handles identity worries attracts impersonators who play on the same fears. Some habits to keep:

  • Go to Aura through its official website or app store listing, and type the address yourself.
  • Treat any call or text claiming your Aura account is compromised as suspicious until you've checked inside the app.
  • Never read out one-time codes, passwords or your Social Security number to someone who contacted you first.
  • Pay only on the official checkout page.

If you ever suspect your accounts have been taken over, my guide to spotting a hacked Facebook account walks through the warning signs.

My verdict on Aura

This is a real, named company with disclosed insurers, a clear refund window and a privacy policy that explains what it collects. It's legit. But it's a subscription, the refund has conditions, its figures on cover are inconsistent across its pages, and no service can stop identity theft outright. Read the policy documents and the refund rules before you pay, and decide whether the extras justify the cost for you.
