Monzo Card: Where It Works, PIN, Freezing, Replacements and Declines

The Monzo card is a Mastercard debit card that comes with your Monzo current account, so everything you spend comes straight from your Monzo balance. It isn't a credit card, and it should work anywhere Mastercard is accepted, including any ATM with the Mastercard logo.

Here's what catches people out. You can only have one active card per person per account. So if your card still works, Monzo won't send you a second one, even as a spare for travel. And while the card number and the physical card expire, your account number and sort code don't, so standing orders and payments into your account carry on as normal when a new card arrives.

Debit card, not credit card

Your Monzo card spends your own balance, for day-to-day payments and cash withdrawals. Monzo does offer a separate credit product, the Monzo Flex Credit Card, and once you have a current account you can check in the app whether you're eligible. The two are different cards with different rules.

Where the card works and where it doesn't

Monzo says the card should work wherever Mastercard is taken. Now and then a merchant's systems don't recognise it, and Monzo names occasional issues in Cuba, Portugal, North and South Korea and Bulgaria. If you're travelling to one of those, its help section and community forum are where it suggests asking about specific places.

Getting your card and activating it

Monzo posts cards to UK addresses by Royal Mail 1st Class. Most arrive the next day if you order before 3pm on a weekday, but it can take 2 to 5 working days when Royal Mail is busy. If it's been longer than 5 working days, message Monzo from Help in the app. Replacement cards sent overseas go by DHL.

  1. Open the Monzo app and tap the Home icon in the menu bar.
  2. Tap Activate My Card if you're new to Monzo.
  3. For a replacement card, tap Activate new card underneath your current card. If you can't see it, swipe down on your list of payments.
  4. If contactless doesn't work straight away, put the card in a card machine and enter your PIN once. Contactless should work after that.

To check delivery, tap Home, scroll to the account the card was ordered for, tap the Card tab to the right of your transaction feed and scroll to Replacement at the bottom.

Card costs worth knowing

What you needWhat Monzo says, as of October 2026
Replacement for a damaged or broken cardA £5 replacement fee, unless you have a free card allowance
Card sent to an address outside the UK£30
A second card on the same accountNot possible while your current card works
Card number, PIN or CVCShown in the app after your PIN, Touch ID or Face ID

Monzo also won't deliver cards to some countries because it can't guarantee safe, quick delivery, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, North Korea and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

PIN, card details and freezing

To see your card number, PIN or CVC, tap Card on the account you need, choose the number, then enter your PIN or use Touch ID or Face ID. To change your PIN, use the cash machine of any major high street bank, such as Barclays, HSBC or Lloyds, and choose PIN services. Some machines abroad allow it too, but Monzo recommends doing it in the UK because it might not work overseas.

Freezing takes seconds: tap Card on your home screen, then Freeze. Defrost the same way when you find it. If you can't get into the app, sign in to Monzo Web with the email linked to your account, open the magic link Monzo emails you, and freeze it there. You can also call Monzo on 0800 088 4040 from the UK or +44 20 3872 0620 from abroad.

Lost, stolen or damaged cards

  1. Freeze the card first if there's any chance someone else has it.
  2. Tap Home in the app's menu bar, then Order a new card.
  3. Choose your reason. If it was stolen or you've seen payments you don't recognise, tap I've been a victim of fraud or theft.
  4. Keep the old card frozen until the new one arrives, then activate the new one.

Declined payments, contactless and disputes

If a card machine says declined but the payment shows in your app, Monzo says the problem is likely the merchant's machine, and in most cases the charge comes back within 7 days. If a merchant has charged you wrongly or hasn't refunded you, contact them first. If that fails, wait the 7 days, gather proof of your contact with them, then raise a dispute in the app with the full story. Disputes can take up to 12 weeks, and the outcome depends on your evidence.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If contactless still fails after a chip and PIN payment, order a new card: tap Home, tap Card on the right account, scroll to Replacement and tap Order new card.

Why the card expires

Cards expire to protect against fraud, to take card security updates and to keep the card in good working condition. Only the physical card and the card number change. Your account, account number and sort code stay the same.

My verdict on the Monzo card

I'd treat the Monzo card as a solid everyday debit card that's easy to control from your phone, with freezing, PIN lookup and replacements all in the app. The two limits to plan around are the single active card per account and the £30 charge to send a card abroad, so if you travel a lot, sort a replacement before you go. If you're still choosing an app bank, here's my take on Monzo against Starling and on Revolut against Monzo.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Monzo card a credit card?

No. The physical card that comes with a Monzo current account is a Mastercard debit card, and spending comes straight from your Monzo account. Monzo's credit card is a separate product, Monzo Flex.

Can I get a second Monzo card?

Not while your current card works. Monzo allows one active card per person per account at a time.

How do I change my Monzo PIN?

Use the cash machine of a major high street bank such as Barclays, HSBC or Lloyds and choose PIN services. Monzo recommends doing it in the UK.

How long does a Monzo card take to arrive?

Most arrive the next day if you order before 3pm on a weekday, but it can take 2 to 5 working days when Royal Mail is busy.

How much does a replacement Monzo card cost?

Monzo charges a £5 replacement fee unless you have a free card allowance, and £30 to send a card outside the UK.
