Contactless Limit UK: Is It Still 100 Pounds?

The UK contactless card limit is still 100 pounds per payment at most banks, even though, since an FCA rule change on 19 March, banks with strong fraud controls have been allowed to set their own limits. Apple Pay and Google Pay have no fixed 100 pound limit, because your phone checks your identity on every payment.

You've probably read that the UK's contactless limit has been scrapped. That's half right. The regulator removed the fixed cap, but your card almost certainly still stops at 100 pounds. Here's what changed, what didn't, and why paying with your phone works differently.

The short version

What the FCA changed

The FCA announced that banks and payment providers with strong fraud controls can set their own contactless limits, and the change took effect on 19 March, in spring 2026. It's also encouraging firms to let customers set their own limit or switch contactless off altogether, which many high street banks already allow.

The catch is that it's optional. The FCA says most banks and payment providers are likely to keep their existing limits for the foreseeable future. UK Finance adds that processing contactless card payments above 100 pounds would also need changes to card terminals and the industry rules behind them. So don't expect to tap your card for a big weekly shop just yet.

Why Apple Pay and Google Pay have no limit

Mobile wallets work differently. UK Finance says Apple Pay and Google Pay continue without a fixed 100 pound limit because your phone verifies your identity on every payment, using Face ID, a fingerprint or your passcode. That check happens whatever the amount, which is why higher payments are allowed. If you regularly hit the card limit, adding your card to your phone's wallet is the simplest fix.

The PIN check that catches people out

Even under 100 pounds, your card can suddenly ask for your PIN. That's the background limit: after a certain number of contactless payments, or once a total spend is reached (no more than 300 pounds), you'll be asked for your PIN to confirm it's you. It's a fraud check, not a fault, and it resets once you've used your PIN.

Are you protected if your card is stolen?

Yes. The FCA says existing consumer protections stay in place, and you must be reimbursed in unauthorised fraud cases, such as if your card is lost or stolen. Report a lost card to your bank straight away.

How big a deal is contactless?

Very. Barclays research cited by the FCA found almost 95% of eligible in-store card payments were contactless in 2024. UK Finance says 19.2 billion contactless card payments were made in the UK in 2025, worth 311 billion pounds, with an average payment of just under 18 pounds. Most taps are small, which is why most people never notice the limit.

Contactless on a credit card vs a debit card

The same 100 pound limit and background PIN checks apply to contactless debit and credit cards. The FCA's protection for unauthorised fraud applies to both. Where they differ is how money comes back if something goes wrong, so if you're making a large purchase, check with your card issuer what protection applies to that payment type.

Can you set your own limit?

Many banks already let you set a lower contactless limit or turn contactless off in their app, and the FCA is encouraging more to offer it. If you're worried about card theft, lowering your limit is a sensible step. Check your banking app's card settings.

Travelling abroad with contactless

The 100 pound figure is a UK card limit. Abroad, local contactless limits and terminal rules apply, and they vary by country. If a tap is declined overseas, inserting the card and using your PIN, or paying with your phone's wallet, usually works. Check your bank's app before you travel for any overseas card settings.

For small businesses

If you take card payments, nothing changes overnight. Customers paying more than 100 pounds with a card will usually still need to insert it, while phone wallet payments can go higher. Make sure your terminal accepts mobile wallets so big-ticket customers aren't stuck.

My verdict

Assume your card still stops at 100 pounds until your bank tells you otherwise, and use your phone for anything bigger. Banks that change limits have to tell customers clearly, so you'll hear about it. If you run a business that takes cards, the best POS systems for small businesses covers terminals that handle mobile wallets, and sole trader vs limited company helps if you're setting up.
