Both are enterprise HR suites. Dayforce puts HR, payroll, time, talent and analytics on one platform with a single data model, and is named a Leader in Gartner's HCM suites report for organisations with 1,000+ employees. Workday pairs HCM with its own finance products and AI agents orchestrated by Sana. For payroll-heavy, shift-based workforces look hard at Dayforce; for HR and finance on one vendor, Workday.
I read Dayforce's home page and Workday's HCM and payroll pages. Both are marketing pages, so I've treated their numbers as their own claims. What they do show clearly is where each one starts from.

Where Dayforce puts its weight
Dayforce's message is one platform and one data model for everything to do with people: HR, pay, time, talent, planning and analytics. It makes a lot of payroll accuracy and compliance, and says HR teams using it are 31% more efficient than industry peers, based on its own analysis of HR staffing ratios benchmarked against SHRM data.
It's also buying. Dayforce has announced an agreement to acquire Ribbon AI, an AI-native recruiting company, which tells you where its talent tools are heading.
Its reach is large too. Dayforce says it's trusted by 7 million users worldwide and runs a global HR ecosystem with partners for local expertise, which matters if you pay people in more than one country. It's the platform to test hardest on payroll accuracy and time rules, because payroll and compliance are what it leads with.
Where Workday puts its weight
Workday leads with AI that it says is grounded in the real rules and workflows behind hiring, pay and development, and with agents for HR, finance and IT, orchestrated by its Sana assistant. Its HCM covers HR, payroll, talent and workforce management, and the same vendor sells financial management, planning and spend tools, which is the main reason finance and HR leaders buy it together.
A small detail that trips up new employees: there's no single Workday login page. Workday tells users to get their company's own sign-in link from HR or IT.
Workday's site also lists separate product logins for Adaptive, Evisort and Workday Peakon, products that sit alongside its core suite. If you're comparing it with Dayforce, ask which of those you'd need and whether they're part of the same contract.
If you've sat through enterprise software demos, take a look at the SaaS publications open to contributors before you pitch.
Five questions before a demo
- How many employees do you have now, and in three years? Both are built for larger organisations.
- Is payroll your biggest headache? Make the vendor run your trickiest pay scenario live.
- Do you want HR and finance from one vendor? That leans Workday.
- Do you have shift workers and complex time rules? Test Dayforce's workforce management on them.
- Ask each for a customer your size and sector to speak to before you shortlist.

My advice on Workday or Dayforce
For a business with a few dozen staff, I'd say neither yet; both pages are aimed at large enterprises, and a smaller HR and payroll tool will get you running sooner. If you're past a thousand employees with complex pay and shifts, put Dayforce on the shortlist first. If your finance team is also replacing its system, Workday's HR and finance on one platform is the stronger argument. Judge both on your own payroll run, not the slides.
Do you make HR, payroll or people software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place in comparisons like this one.
