Lemon Squeezy suits solo founders and small software businesses that want a merchant of record: it sells on your behalf and handles payments, sales tax, fraud, refunds and chargebacks, for 5% plus a fixed amount per transaction. Stripe suits businesses that want full control of their payments stack, at 2.9% plus a fixed amount per successful domestic card transaction, and it now offers its own merchant of record service, Managed Payments. Stripe owns Lemon Squeezy, so this is a choice between two routes from the same company. These numbers are as of October 2026.
Stripe now owns Lemon Squeezy, which changes this comparison, so I started there. I read Lemon Squeezy's home, pricing, merchant of record and 2026 update pages, and Stripe's home, pricing, Managed Payments and Stripe Tax docs.

What Stripe's ownership changes
Lemon Squeezy's own blog says Stripe acquired it, and its 2026 update is about Lemon Squeezy and Stripe Managed Payments. Managed Payments is Stripe's merchant of record solution for digital products: Stripe's docs say it handles sales tax, VAT and GST compliance in more than 80 countries, plus fraud prevention, dispute management and transaction-level customer support.
There are limits worth reading first. Stripe's docs say Managed Payments doesn't support Stripe Connect, embeddable web components or subscriptions created outside Checkout or Payment Links. If your setup relies on any of those, plain Stripe plus Stripe Tax is the route.
Why founders pick Lemon Squeezy
Lemon Squeezy takes the liability off your plate. As merchant of record it handles payments, sales tax, fraud, refunds, chargebacks and PCI compliance, accepts up to 21 payment methods including PayPal, and issues license keys and secure download links after each sale. There are no monthly charges for its ecommerce features, and it adds affiliates, coupon codes and email marketing in the same dashboard.

Why teams stay on Stripe
With Stripe you get the building blocks: payments online and in person, Billing, Connect for platforms, Terminal and Radar for fraud. It supports 135+ currencies and payment methods and says Billing manages 200M+ active subscriptions. You keep the customer relationship, and Stripe Tax monitors where you might need to register, then helps you register, file and remit.
A rival that acts as merchant of record is set out in my Paddle and Stripe comparison.
Checks before you choose a checkout
- Decide whether you want to be the seller of record or hand that to someone else.
- List the countries you sell into and check tax coverage for each.
- Check you don't rely on Stripe Connect if you want Managed Payments.
- Work out the fee on your typical order size on both pages.
- Confirm you need license keys or digital downloads built in.
If you're still deciding what to sell, these digital product ideas for solopreneurs are a good start, and my notes on Stripe's marketing strategy show how Stripe grew.
My advice on Lemon Squeezy or Stripe
If you're one person selling software or downloads worldwide and sales tax is the job you want gone, start with Lemon Squeezy or Stripe Managed Payments and compare them on your own order sizes. If you're building a platform, need Connect, or sell in person too, stay on Stripe and switch on Stripe Tax. Check both fee pages on the day you sign up, because they change.
