Jobseekers Allowance: How New Style JSA Works and How to Claim

Jobseeker's Allowance now means New Style JSA, a fortnightly payment for people out of work, or working under 16 hours a week, who've paid enough Class 1 National Insurance. GOV.UK lists up to 75 pounds 65 a week if you're 24 or under and up to 95 pounds 55 if you're 25 or over, as of Nov 2026, for up to 182 days.

If you've just lost your job, New Style JSA is the benefit built on your work history rather than your bank balance. Your savings and your partner's income don't count, which is why it's worth checking even if Universal Credit has already said no. Income-based JSA has closed to new claims, and GOV.UK sends people to Universal Credit for that instead.

Who qualifies for New Style JSA

GOV.UK's Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) guide says you'll need to have worked as an employee and paid Class 1 National Insurance contributions, usually in the last 2 to 3 years. You must also:

  • be 18 or over and under State Pension age
  • be in Great Britain
  • not be working 16 or more hours a week
  • not be in a disagreement with your employer about employment-related issues (a trade dispute)
  • not have an illness or disability that stops you working (Employment and Support Allowance is the one to check instead)

Self-employed people who only paid Class 2 contributions aren't eligible, unless they worked as a share fisherman or a volunteer development worker. Northern Ireland has its own rules. Part-time students may qualify. Full-time students can only qualify if the course is at Level 4 or below, they don't get a maintenance loan, grant or bursary for it, and they can meet the work-related requirements agreed with a work coach.

The National Insurance years that count

You usually need Class 1 contributions for the previous 2 tax years, and National Insurance credits can count for one of those years. GOV.UK's example: claim on or before 2 January, 2027 and the years that count are the 2024 to 2025 and 2023 to 2024 tax years. Claim on or after 3 January, 2027 and they become 2025 to 2026 and 2024 to 2025. Each tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Different years may count if, in those 2 tax years, you claimed JSA, Employment and Support Allowance, Carer's Allowance, Maternity Allowance or Carer Support Payment, or lived abroad with a partner serving in the armed forces.

Savings above 16,000 pounds won't block a claim

The Department for Work and Pensions guidance, New Style Jobseeker's Allowance, spells out what most people miss. Your savings and capital, and your partner's savings, capital and income, aren't taken into account. You can apply even if your partner works or the two of you have savings over 16,000 pounds, the point where GOV.UK says you're unlikely to get Universal Credit. What can reduce New Style JSA is your own earnings and any pension payment you're getting.

There's a second, quieter benefit. While you're on New Style JSA you're awarded Class 1 National Insurance credits, which help towards your State Pension and other contributory benefits later. If you qualify for Universal Credit as well, the JSA counts as income and reduces it, but GOV.UK notes that JSA is usually paid more regularly.

Weekly rates and the 182 day limit

AgeMaximum weekly New Style JSA, as of Nov 2026
24 or underUp to 75 pounds 65
25 or overUp to 95 pounds 55

Those are maximums, and a benefits calculator shows what you'd get and how your other benefits would change. You can get JSA for up to 182 days, about 6 months, and then your work coach talks you through your options. You may wait up to 7 days for JSA to start and up to 2 weeks after that for the first payment, which may not be the full amount. After that it's paid in full every 2 weeks into a bank, building society or credit union account.

If you've had the full 182 days before, you may get it again once at least 12 weeks have passed since your last entitlement ended and the new claim falls in a different benefit year. A benefit year is 12 months long and starts on the first Sunday in January.

Making the claim online

Before you start, have these ready:

  • your National Insurance number
  • bank or building society details, yours or those of a family member or trusted friend
  • employment details for the past 6 months, including employer contact details and the dates you worked there
  • a statement letter for any private pension, workplace pension or annuity you receive (you can still apply without it, and DWP will contact you if it needs evidence)

You apply again from scratch each time you reclaim, even if nothing's changed, and a claim can be backdated by up to 3 months in certain circumstances. Appointees, people who need help and anyone needing braille, large print or audio CD contact Jobcentre Plus instead, or the Jobseeker's Allowance Processing Centre in Northern Ireland. DWP then contacts you within 14 days with either an interview invitation or a letter explaining why you're not eligible.

Your jobcentre interview and Claimant Commitment

  1. Bring one photo ID (such as a passport, driving licence or eVisa), one proof of address dated within the last 6 months, and one further proof of identity, such as a P60. A P45 from your employer can count as the further proof.
  2. Answer some questions to confirm your identity.
  3. Agree your Claimant Commitment with your work coach: what you'll do to look for work, such as registering with recruitment agencies or writing a CV, and how many hours a week you'll spend on it.
  4. Wait for DWP to write to you confirming whether you're eligible and how much you'll get.

You can take someone with you. Contact Jobcentre Plus before the interview if you need support for a disability or health condition, such as a sign language interpreter, or a foreign language interpreter. What goes in your Claimant Commitment depends on your health, your responsibilities at home and how much help you need to find work.

Keeping your payments and reporting changes

Your work coach arranges appointments every 1 to 2 weeks, where you show what you've done, such as proof of applications and interviews. Payments can be reduced or stopped, which GOV.UK calls being sanctioned, for up to 26 weeks if you miss an appointment, turn down a job or training, don't apply for jobs you're told about, or leave a job without good reason. Victims of domestic abuse may get a break of up to 13 weeks from job seeking. If you disagree with a decision, ask for mandatory reconsideration, then appeal to the Social Security and Child Support Tribunal.

Report changes straight away by calling the New Style JSA helpline on 0800 169 0310, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, or by writing to the Jobcentre Plus office that pays you. That includes starting any work, even a few hours of voluntary work, going into hospital, starting education or training, getting another benefit, leaving Great Britain for any length of time, and going on holiday, even within Great Britain. If you're paid too much, you might have to pay some of it back.

My advice if you've just lost your job

Claim quickly, even if you think your savings rule you out, because they don't count for New Style JSA. Read GOV.UK's Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) guide for the current rates and the claim service, then check Universal Credit alongside it. Treat your Claimant Commitment like a work plan and keep a simple record of every application, because that record is what protects your payments.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Jobseeker's Allowance a week?

Up to 75 pounds 65 if you're 24 or under and up to 95 pounds 55 if you're 25 or over, as of Nov 2026.

How long can you get New Style JSA for?

Up to 182 days, which is about 6 months. After that your work coach talks to you about your options.

Do savings affect New Style JSA?

No. Your savings and your partner's savings and income aren't taken into account, though your own earnings and pension payments can reduce it.

Can I work while claiming JSA?

Not usually for 16 or more hours a week, and earnings can reduce what you get. You must report any work, even a few hours.

How long after applying will DWP contact me?

Within 14 days, either to invite you to a jobcentre interview or to explain why you're not eligible.

Can I still apply for income-based JSA?

No. GOV.UK says you can't apply for it any more and should apply for Universal Credit instead.
