Is Suno Free? The Free Plan and the Ownership Catch

Yes, Suno has a free plan. You get 50 credits a day, access to Suno's free models and standard features. The big catch is rights: on the free plan, Suno keeps ownership of the songs you make and you can only use them for non-commercial purposes.

Suno is the AI tool that turns a text prompt into a full song, vocals and all. It's fun to play with, and plenty of business owners have wondered whether it could make a jingle, a podcast intro or background music for their videos. On the free plan, that's where you need to be careful.

What's on Suno's free plan

Suno's plans page lists these for the free plan:

  • Access to Suno's free models, described as its best free model in the comparison.
  • 50 credits per day.
  • Standard features only.
  • Audio uploads up to 8 minutes long.
  • A shared creation queue, with up to 4 songs being made at once.

It also lists what the free plan doesn't include: no monthly song downloads, no commercial rights, no add-on credit top-ups and no stem separation.

Suno says credits on its plans don't carry over from one day to the next or from month to month, so your daily 50 are use-them-or-lose-them.

The ownership catch on free songs

This is the part business owners need to know. Suno's help centre says that if you're using the free version, which it calls the Basic tier, Suno retains ownership of the songs you generate. You're allowed to use those songs for non-commercial purposes, as long as you follow Suno's terms of service.

If you were on a Pro or Premier plan when the song was created, Suno says you're considered the owner and you keep the rights to commercial use, even if you end your plan later.

The key words are when the song was created. Rights depend on the plan you were on at the time you made it. So don't make your podcast intro or ad music on the free plan and assume you can use it for business later. If it's for your business, make it on a plan that includes commercial rights.

What Suno's Pro and Premier plans add

If you decide Suno is worth using for business, the plans above free add more than rights. Pro gives you Suno's advanced models, 2,500 credits a month, commercial use rights, a priority queue and the option to record, upload and create with your own voice. Premier adds Suno Studio, which now includes MIDI, effects and automation, plus 10,000 credits a month, audio uploads of up to 30 minutes and the ability to add new vocals or instrumentals to existing songs.

Extra top-up credits work differently from plan credits. Suno says top-up credits don't expire, but you need an active plan to use them, so they're not a way to keep creating on free.

Good uses for free Suno

  • Testing ideas and prompts before you decide whether Suno suits you.
  • Personal projects, such as a birthday song for a friend.
  • Learning how AI music prompts work.
  • Sketching a style or mood to brief a musician.

How to get the most from 50 credits a day

  1. Write a clear prompt with the genre, mood, tempo and instruments you want.
  2. Add your own lyrics if the words matter, rather than leaving it to chance.
  3. Generate a couple of versions, then refine the prompt that came closest.
  4. Keep a note of the prompts that work so you can reuse them tomorrow.
  5. Remember your credits reset daily, so a little each day goes further than one long session.

For prompt ideas, my list of Suno prompts is a good place to start, and if the rights rules put you off, these Suno alternatives include other AI music tools worth comparing.

Questions to ask before using AI music for your business

  • Which plan was I on when I created this song?
  • Does my use count as commercial, such as an ad, a client video or a product?
  • Have I read Suno's terms of service on commercial use?
  • Would a royalty-free library or a musician be a safer choice for this job?

If the answer to the second question is yes, the free plan isn't the right place to make it.

Who free Suno suits

The free plan suits curious creators, hobbyists and anyone who wants to understand AI music before committing to anything. It's a brilliant toy and a useful way to explore ideas.

It suits you less if you want music for your business, your videos, your ads or your podcast. That's commercial use, and on the free plan it isn't allowed.

My verdict: Suno is free to play with, and 50 credits a day is plenty to explore. Just don't use free-plan songs for anything connected to your business, because Suno owns them and the rights are fixed at the moment you create each song.
