Is HotelTonight Legit? Cancellations, Payment and Refunds (2026)

Yes, HotelTonight is a real last-minute hotel booking app: it was founded in 2010 and Airbnb bought it in 2019. The catch is that most rooms are non-refundable and non-cancellable, and refunds or changes are at the hotel's discretion, so only book when your plans are settled.

Last-minute booking apps are handy when a flight gets delayed or a plan changes, but putting a card into an app you've only just downloaded makes people nervous. That's why I looked at what HotelTonight's own help pages and its public record say. Here's what I found, so you can decide before you tap the book button.

Who owns HotelTonight

According to Wikipedia, HotelTonight was founded in 2010 by Sam Shank, Jared Simon and Chris Bailey, and it's headquartered in San Francisco, California. It launched on the iPhone App Store in the US in 2011, with an Android app following later that year. Wikipedia says Airbnb acquired it in 2019 for about 450 million US dollars in cash and stock.

The company's own pages are quieter about this. Its website links to Airbnb's careers site, but its About page doesn't spell out the ownership, so I'm relying on Wikipedia for the Airbnb part. Wikipedia describes HotelTonight as an online travel agency and metasearch engine for last-minute lodging, which is a useful way to think about it: it sells rooms at hotels rather than running them.

How booking on HotelTonight works

The help centre explains the rules for bookings. Stays can be up to 14 nights, and you can book up to 100 days before check-in. One booking can include up to 4 rooms. You can book until 2am on the first night of your stay, in the hotel's local time.

Some hotels assign your room type at check-in. Where you can choose in advance, the app lets you pick 1 or 2 beds under the room type option. Add guest names before you confirm, so the hotel has the right details when you arrive.

Cancellations and refunds on HotelTonight

This is the single most important thing to know. HotelTonight's help page says most rooms are offered on a non-refundable, non-cancellable, non-transferable and non-modifiable basis. Unless checkout shows different terms, all refunds, cancellations, transfers and modifications are at the discretion of the hotel.

In plain English, a cheap last-minute rate usually means the price is final. Treat the checkout screen as the contract. If it shows different terms for your room, those are the ones that count, and it's worth taking a screenshot.

  • Check the cancellation wording on the checkout screen before you pay.
  • Only book when you're sure about the date and the hotel.
  • Ask the hotel directly for things like early check-in or a particular room, because those requests go to the hotel and depend on availability.
  • Keep your confirmation and receipt in case you need to raise a problem.

How HotelTonight handles payment

The help centre says payments go through a third-party payments processor, and that HotelTonight doesn't store your card number or share it with the hotel. Taxes and fees are shown before you complete a booking.

Hotels commonly ask for a card at check-in to cover incidentals. HotelTonight's FAQ says that hold is typically removed within 5 to 7 business days. If you use a debit card, you may see a temporary charge instead of a hold, which it says is usually refunded within 5 to 7 business days, and some hotels don't accept debit cards at all.

The HotelTonight Price Guarantee

HotelTonight says that if you find a lower price elsewhere that meets its conditions, it will credit your account with the difference. The full terms sit in its Promotional and Loyalty Program Terms, so read them before relying on it. Note that it's a credit to your account rather than cash, and the conditions decide whether you qualify.

Credits, promo codes and receipts

The FAQ explains a few details people trip over. Credits are applied in order of expiration, soonest first. Coupons or credits can be limited to certain bookings, such as those above a minimum price, and promo codes can be redeemed only once and can't be combined. For receipts, you open the Bookings tab, pick the booking and tap Receipt. VAT and PDF receipts aren't offered, which matters if you need paperwork for expenses.

Fake HotelTonight apps and booking scams

Whenever an app is popular, copycats follow. A few rules keep you safer:

  • Download the app only from the official app stores.
  • Don't pay a stranger or a hotel that messages you out of the blue by bank transfer, gift card or crypto.
  • Be careful with emails or texts that say your booking is cancelled and ask you to click a link to re-enter your card.
  • If a deal looks too good for the hotel's level, check the hotel's own website before you pay.

For trip planning that doesn't depend on a last-minute scramble, my ChatGPT prompts for planning a trip on a small budget can help you line up options earlier. And before you trust any review you read about an app, have a look at the product review sites worth checking.

My verdict on HotelTonight

It's a legitimate booking app with named founders, a large owner behind it and clear published rules, so it isn't a scam. The risk is how final the booking is. If your plans might change, a last-minute rate that can't be cancelled isn't a bargain. If you're certain, it's a quick way to find a room.
