Holafly is a real travel eSIM company, founded in Spain in 2017, that sells data plans for phones in more than 200 countries. Its refund policy gives you up to 6 months to ask, and a full refund if the eSIM hasn't been activated. The catch: your phone must be eSIM-compatible, and an unused plan won't start until you connect abroad.
If you travel for work or run a business from a laptop and a phone, you've probably been tempted by a travel eSIM instead of paying roaming rates. Holafly's name comes up constantly, and so does the question of whether it's legit. I've read Holafly's own refund policy and help pages, plus Wikipedia, to answer it.
Who is behind Holafly and what it sells
According to Wikipedia, Holafly was founded in Spain in 2017 by Pedro Maiquez and Yingyan Hu, and the infobox lists Dublin and Madrid as headquarters. It began as a seller of physical SIM cards for travellers. Its main product is now an international eSIM, launched in 2022, which Wikipedia says provides unlimited prepaid data and roaming plans to international travellers in more than 200 countries.
Wikipedia also reports a company press release in 2025 saying Holafly had sold more than 15 million eSIMs worldwide. That's the company's own claim, so treat it as a sign of scale, not independent proof of quality.
What a Holafly eSIM is and which phones work
Holafly says an eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card installed directly on your device, and it tells you to check that your device is eSIM-compatible. That's the first thing to do, before you pick a plan. If your phone doesn't support eSIMs, there's nothing to install.
The pages I read didn't spell out whether your phone must also be unlocked, so look at Holafly's compatible-devices page, and note that its refund policy covers an incompatible or locked device. I also couldn't confirm from those pages whether plans include calls or text messages, so check the plan details if you rely on a phone number.
When a Holafly eSIM starts working
Holafly's help says your eSIM doesn't start when you install it. It says it only activates when you arrive at your destination and connect to a local network with data roaming turned on. It recommends installing at least one day before your trip, ideally at home on stable Wi-Fi.
After you land, you switch on the travel eSIM line, choose it for mobile data and enable data roaming. If you keep your normal line for calls, that setup is worth getting comfortable with before you board. Travel is stressful enough without troubleshooting at the airport, and it's one more reason to sort connectivity out before you leave home.
Holafly refund policy in plain English
Holafly's refund policy says you have up to 6 months to request a refund, and each refund type requires that the purchase is no more than 6 months old. It sets out three situations.
- Changed plans: a full refund, if you bought from the Holafly website or app and haven't activated the eSIM. If it was already activated or used, Holafly says it will analyse your specific case.
- Incompatible or locked device: a full refund, if you haven't scanned the QR code or used any data, and you send a screenshot and the information needed to verify the problem.
- Connection issues: a full or partial refund, if you report the problem to customer support before asking. Holafly says a partial or full refund may carry an administrative fee of 3.50 US dollars depending on the data you've used.
It also says it can't guarantee a refund if you contact it after your trip. The practical lesson is to report a problem while you're still travelling and keep screenshots. Holafly's page says to contact its customer support team and describes refunds going back to the same bank account within 3 to 5 business days.
Sharing a hotspot from your Holafly eSIM
Holafly's page says you can create a personal WiFi hotspot and share up to 500MB of data daily. If you plan to tether a laptop for client calls, that limit matters. Read the plan details for your destination before relying on it.

A 2025 study about eSIM routing and Holafly
Wikipedia reports that an academic study presented at the USENIX Security Symposium in 2025 found that traffic from some tested eSIMs, Holafly's included, could be routed through partner networks in other countries, including China. I haven't read the study itself, and I couldn't find Holafly's response in the pages I used, so I'm only passing on what Wikipedia says. If you handle sensitive client data, that's a good reason to keep using encrypted apps and to read the privacy terms before choosing any travel eSIM.
Spotting fake Holafly sites and messages
Buy from Holafly's own website or app, because its refund policy for changed plans is tied to purchases made there. Be careful with unofficial resellers, social media offers and emails asking you to reinstall a QR code from a link. If a QR code stops working, use Holafly's help pages. For a small business owner planning longer trips, my piece on hotel safety covers the rest of the trip.
