Is Grailed Legit? Buyer Protection, Fees and Fakes (2026)

Yes, Grailed is a legit resale site for menswear and streetwear, founded in 2013 and owned and operated by GOAT Group. Buyers pay no platform fee and get Purchase Protection when an item can't be verified or doesn't match its listing. The catch is that you're buying from individuals, and you've only 3 calendar days after delivery to report a problem.

If you've ever hunted for a discontinued jacket or a rare pair of designer trainers, Grailed has probably popped up in your search results. I've read Grailed's own About page, fee and protection pages, its terms, and press coverage of its sale to GOAT Group, so you can decide whether to buy or sell there with your eyes open. Short version: it's real, but the protection only works if you play by its rules.

Who owns Grailed and how the site works

Grailed started in 2013, and FashionUnited names Arun Gupta as its co-founder and CEO. GOAT Group, the company behind the GOAT sneaker app, invested in it first, in 2021, and then agreed to buy it outright in a cash and stock deal. World Footwear reported that the acquisition was completed on October 19, 2022.

Grailed's About page now says it's owned and operated by GOAT Group. According to FashionNetwork, Grailed kept running as its own site but plugged into GOAT's operations for things like shipping and payments. FashionUnited said the combined group would have more than 50 million members across 170 countries.

The model itself is peer-to-peer. People list new and used clothing, mostly menswear, and other people buy it. Grailed sits in the middle: it handles the checkout, takes its commission, and steps in under its protection rules when something goes wrong.

Grailed's Purchase Protection for buyers

Grailed's Purchase Protection page says qualifying orders are covered if Grailed finds that:

  • the item's authenticity can't be verified,
  • the item materially differs from its listing in colour, condition, fabric or measurements, or
  • you were sent the wrong item.

The deadline is the bit to remember. Grailed's help article says you have 3 calendar days from the date the item arrives to report an issue, and missing that window may mean your return request is denied. So open the parcel straight away, compare it with the listing photos and measurements, and raise anything odd inside the app before the clock runs out.

Grailed's terms also leave the outcome in its hands. They say Grailed decides at its sole discretion whether to send the issue back to the seller, ask you to open a dispute with the payment processor, or refund you after investigating. That's normal for resale sites, but it means protection isn't an automatic refund.

How Grailed checks listings for counterfeits

Fakes are the obvious worry on any designer resale site. Grailed's protection page says brand and platform specialists take a comprehensive approach to listing verification, and its About page says it works with help from its community to make sure items are authentic.

Notice what that does and doesn't mean. Grailed reviews listings, but your item ships from the seller to you, not through a central authentication warehouse. That's why the protection rules matter so much: if a piece turns out to be questionable, your safety net is reporting it quickly through Grailed.

  • Check the seller's past sales and feedback before you buy anything expensive.
  • Ask for extra photos of tags, stitching and labels on designer pieces.
  • Pay only through Grailed's own checkout so the order counts as a qualifying one.
  • Keep every message inside Grailed so there's a record if you need help.

What it costs to sell on Grailed

Listing on Grailed is free. Its fees help article sets out the seller side:

Grailed feeWhat Grailed's help pages say
Standard commission9% on sales of 120 US dollars and above
Reduced commission6% on sales under 120 US dollars, with a minimum of 1.99 US dollars
Payment processingCharged separately; US domestic rates listed at 3.49% plus 49 cents
Buyer platform feeNone: Grailed says it's free for buyers

Grailed's terms say commission rates can change with notice, so check the live fee page before you price anything. If you're weighing Grailed against other places to sell trainers and streetwear, my breakdowns of what StockX takes when you sell and eBay's selling fees make the comparison easier.

Is selling on Grailed a real side income?

It can be a real way to turn a wardrobe into cash, especially for designer menswear that doesn't sell well on general apps. But nothing on Grailed's pages promises sales, and you're competing with lots of other listings. Clear photos, honest condition notes and accurate measurements decide what moves, because the buyer protection rules lean on whether your item matches its listing.

If you're building a few income streams around a day job or a small business, my list of side hustle ideas that fit around your business puts reselling in context. And if you start buying stock to resell, have a chat with an accountant about tax, because that's a different thing from clearing out your own clothes.

The catch with buying and selling on Grailed

  • A tight reporting window. Three days after delivery goes quickly, so don't let a parcel sit unopened.
  • Peer-to-peer risk. Sizing, condition and photos are only as accurate as each seller makes them.
  • Grailed decides disputes. Its terms let it choose between redirecting you to the seller, a payment dispute or a refund.
  • Two layers of seller fees. Commission plus payment processing come off each sale.

Fake Grailed messages and off-site deals

A classic trick on any clothing app is a buyer or seller who wants to finish the deal somewhere else, often by sending a payment link or asking for a friends-and-family transfer. Once you leave Grailed's checkout, the order isn't a qualifying one, so you lose the protection described above.

Be wary of emails or texts claiming to be from Grailed that ask you to log in through a link, confirm a payout, or pay a release fee. Open the Grailed app or type the web address yourself and check your account there instead.

My verdict: is Grailed worth using?

Grailed is legit. It has a long track record, a large parent company in GOAT Group, and published protection for items that can't be verified or don't match their listings. Buyers who pay through checkout and report problems within three days are in a decent position. Sellers get free listings and clear commission rates, and the main job is listing honestly so buyers have no reason to complain.
