Is Framer Free? What You Can Build on the Free Plan

Yes, Framer has a free plan. Framer says projects on the Free plan include 10 CMS collections, 1,000 pages, 5 MB file uploads and one free locale to try, and it describes the Free plan as ideal for non-commercial use.

Framer is a website builder that started life as a design tool. You design pages on a canvas, publish them as a live site, and manage content in a CMS. The Free plan is generous on pages and collections, so it's tempting to build a whole business site on it. The question is what Framer intends it for, and what you'll need before the site goes in front of customers. Here's the detail.

What Framer's Free plan includes

  • 10 CMS collections for things like blog posts, case studies or team members.
  • 1,000 pages.
  • File uploads of up to 5 MB.
  • One free locale, so you can try localisation.
  • 500 credits to try Framer's Agents, when your workspace has no active plan on any site.

Framer says this makes it easy to explore the product, use it as a design tool or create templates. That's a good summary of where the Free plan shines.

The catch: non-commercial use and your domain

Framer's own FAQ says the Free plan is ideal for non-commercial use. For a business site, that's the line to notice. A portfolio draft, a design prototype or a template you're building to share all sit comfortably on Free. A live site for your business is what Framer's site plans are built for.

The second limit is the address. Framer's FAQ explains that to connect a custom domain, you'll need to move the site to a plan. On Free, your site isn't on your own domain, which matters for trust, branding and search.

It looks odd that Free lists more CMS collections than Basic, and that's how Framer's plans page shows it. Free is for exploring and building, while Basic is for publishing a real personal site on your own domain.

Editors and viewers

Framer's plans page says viewers are free on its plans and additional editors are extra. So you can share a project with a client so they can view and comment, without giving them an editor seat. Framer also says its Pro Experts get free editor access on client projects, which is useful if you hire a Framer specialist.

A good way to use Framer for free

  1. Build your site on the Free plan and use the 1,000 page and 10 collection allowance to get the structure right.
  2. Keep images under the 5 MB upload limit by compressing them first.
  3. Share the project with clients or colleagues as viewers for feedback.
  4. Try the Agents with your 500 starter credits while no site in the workspace is on a plan.
  5. Move the site to a plan when you're ready to connect your domain and go live for customers.

Free alternatives for a business site

If you need a free site you can use for your business from day one, check each builder's terms on commercial use and custom domains. My roundup of the best free website builders for small business compares the free plans side by side.

Framer's Agents on the free plan

Framer's AI features run on credits. On the Free plan, Framer says you receive 500 credits to try Agents when your workspace has no active plan, and you upgrade a site to get more. Treat them as a trial allowance: use them to generate a first layout or rewrite sections, then edit by hand.

Framer also says credits are shared across your entire workspace and its editors. If you invite collaborators, they draw from the same pool, so agree who's using the AI before you start.

Using the Free plan for templates

Framer's FAQ names creating templates as one of the jobs the Free plan suits. If you're a designer, you can build a template on Free, test it with its 1,000 pages and CMS collections, and share it with clients, who can view it at no extra seat. That's the clearest fit between Framer's terms and the Free plan.

File uploads and images

The 5 MB upload limit on the Free plan is the one that shows up in day-to-day building. Large hero images, PDFs and video files can go over it. Compress images before you upload them and host video somewhere designed for it, then embed it, and you'll rarely notice the cap while you design.

My verdict: Framer is free for designing, prototyping and building a site, and the Free plan is roomy. Framer itself says Free is ideal for non-commercial use and you'll need a plan to connect your domain, so treat it as your workshop and move to a plan when the site goes live for your business.
