Is Final Cut Pro Free? The Free Trial and the Free Apple Option

No, Final Cut Pro isn't free. You can try it free for 30 days as part of an Apple Creator Studio trial for first-time members, and Apple's free video editor, iMovie, can send projects across to Final Cut Pro when you're ready.

Final Cut Pro is Apple's professional video editor for Mac and iPad, and it's now part of a bigger bundle called Apple Creator Studio. That change is why the answer to this question has shifted, so it's worth knowing how the free trial and the free alternative fit together.

How the Final Cut Pro free trial works now

Apple's trial page says Final Cut Pro is part of Apple Creator Studio, a collection of creative apps that includes Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage. You can try Apple Creator Studio free for 30 days, and Apple says that's for first-time members only.

The part to watch is the renewal. Apple's footnote says the plan renews automatically until cancelled, so put the end date in your diary the day you start. Apple also says you need an Apple Account and an internet connection to start it.

  1. Open the App Store on your Mac or iPad.
  2. Search for Apple Creator Studio and start the free trial.
  3. Download Final Cut Pro and any other apps you want to test.
  4. Set a reminder a couple of days before the 30 days end.
  5. Cancel in your Apple Account settings if you don't want to carry on.

The standalone Mac app is still around

Apple says Final Cut Pro, Motion and Compressor are also available as standalone Mac apps on the App Store. The difference, according to Apple, is that some of the premium content is only for Apple Creator Studio members. If you already own Final Cut Pro, Apple says it will continue to be updated.

The free option most people skip: iMovie

If you're making short videos for social media, a course or your website, iMovie may do everything you need. It's free on the App Store, edits at up to 4K and includes 29 trailer templates and 48 video and audio effects. The App Store listing also says you can send an iMovie project to Final Cut Pro to use advanced editing tools, professional effects and third-party plug-ins.

That's the smart path for a lot of business owners. Learn the basics in iMovie, and only try Final Cut Pro when you've outgrown it. You won't waste your 30-day trial learning what a timeline is.

What Final Cut Pro adds over iMovie

Apple describes Final Cut Pro as a pro editor for Mac and iPad with features like Magnetic Mask, advanced colour grading and machine learning that detects and tracks faces or objects. On iPad, it can connect up to four iPhone or iPad devices as cameras, control their settings remotely and sync the footage automatically. Those are the tools that matter if video is a big part of your marketing.

Who should try Final Cut Pro

Try it if you edit video every week, work on a Mac or iPad and want faster exports, colour control and multicam shoots. Plan the trial around a real project so you test it on actual work.

Skip it for now if you make the odd reel or a short talking-head video. iMovie, or one of the tools in my round-up of the best video editing software for Mac, will cover you. If you need something that runs on Windows too, my list of Final Cut Pro alternatives has options.

What you'll need to run it

Apple says full functionality is available with macOS 26, iPadOS 26 and iOS 26, and some Apple Creator Studio features need an Apple Intelligence capable device. Check your Mac before you start the trial so you're not testing it on a machine that can't use the newer features.

What the free trial includes besides Final Cut Pro

Because the trial is for Apple Creator Studio rather than Final Cut Pro on its own, you get more than a video editor for those 30 days. Apple lists Motion for titles and effects, Compressor for custom encoding, Logic Pro and MainStage for music, and Pixelmator Pro for images and graphics. Apple also says the bundle includes enhanced versions of Keynote, Pages, Numbers and Freeform with premium templates and a library of royalty-free photos and graphics.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Keynote, Pages, Numbers and Freeform stay free for everyone. The trial just adds the extra templates and intelligence features on top. If you make course slides or proposals as well as videos, it's worth testing those during the same 30 days.

A simple plan for your 30 days

  • Week one: rebuild a short iMovie project in Final Cut Pro to learn the timeline.
  • Week two: edit a real client or marketing video from start to finish.
  • Week three: try multicam on iPad or the colour tools on Mac.
  • Week four: decide, then cancel or carry on before the renewal date.

My verdict: Final Cut Pro isn't free, but the 30-day trial is a fair way to test it. Start with iMovie, move your project across when you need more, and set that reminder before the trial rolls on.
